Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

Periodic safety review (Review of the aging management) which consisted of Technical review on aging for the safety related structures, systems and components and Establish a long term maintenance program was carried out up to April 2005.1. Technical review on aging for the safety related structures, systems and components It was technically confirmed to prevent the loss of function of the safety related structures, systems and components due to aging phenomena, which (1) irradiation damage, (2) corrosion, (3) abrasion and erosion, (4) thermal aging, (5) creep and fatigue, (6) Stress Corrosion Cracking, (7) insulation deterioration and (8) general deterioration, under the periodic monitoring or renewal of them 2. Establish a long term maintenance program The long term maintenance program during JPY2005 to 2014 were established based on the technical review on aging for the safety related structures, systems and components. It was evaluated that the inspection or renewal based on the long term maintenance program, in addition to the spontaneous inspection long-term schedule of the long term voluntary inspection plan, could prevent the loss of function of the safety related structures, systems and components in future.

Scrutiny based on the convenient evaluation to verify whether we have the place where thermal striping in the pipe confluence part was thought to be a primary factor for the heavy accident or not has been done in JOYO. As the result, the big temperature difference ($$Delta$$Tin) of the simple inner pipe confluence part existed at the inner pipe confluence part of the plugging system in the secondary main and auxiliary cooling system. Therefore, detailed evaluation of thermal striping was needed. With the thermocouples of high response installed, the temperature fluctuation in outer surface of the pipe was measured on the secondary auxiliary plugging system for the reason why the temperature difference ($$Delta$$Tin) was the biggest. And, the temperature fluctuation in inner surface of the pipe and stress occurring in the pipe plate thickness direction was evaluated by means of the temperature fluctuation measurement result and non-linear structure analysis system "FINAS". The above-mentioned evaluation results were as follows. (1)The maximum temperature fluctuation occurring in the pipe was always located from the center of inner pipe confluence to 10mm position of the down-stream side. (2)The maximum temperature fluctuation range was about 33$$^{circ}$$C in outer surface of the pipe. And, controlling frequency of the temperature fluctuation was 0.04Hz and 0.09Hz. (3)Time delay was almost never contained in the temperature fluctuation elements between inner and outer surface of the pipe by dint of analysis results of the heat conduction by "FINAS". And, the big temperature distribution did not occur in the pipe plate thickness direction was confirmed that the big temperature distribution did not occur in the pipe plate thickness direction. (4)The temperature fluctuation in the pipe inner surface and the stress occurring in the pipe plate thickness direction was evaluated by use of result of the temperature fluctuation measurement and the heat conduction ...

JAXA spacecraft and sample return mission Hayabusa2 has arrived at the near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, which is classified a primitive carbonaceous object. Here we report recent results of near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. The observations provide direct measurements of the surface composition of Ryugu and context for the returned samples. NIRS3 has detected a weak and narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micrometer across entire observed surface. This absorption feature is attributed to the presence of OH-bearing minerals. The NIRS3 observations also revealed that Ryugu is the darkest object to be observed up-close by a visiting spacecraft. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are consistent with thermally-and/or shock-metamorphosed, and/or carbon-rich space-weathered primitive and hydrated carbonaceous chondrites.
