Fourteen organizations, representing eleven countries, participated in a leak-before-break (LBB) benchmark exercise that compared results from analyses among participating countries and identified the effects of weld residual stress (WRS) and crack morphology on crack opening displacement (COD), critical bending moment (CBM), and leak rate (LR) results. The participants determined whether the initial problem would meet their country's LBB acceptance criteria and then evaluated the effects of crack morphology and WRS for a prescribed crack size, geometry and loading. Six out of fourteen participants indicated that the initial problem met their LBB requirements. In the follow-on tasks, differences among the participant's CBM predictions were principally due to the material properties used in the analysis while the type of failure model chosen contributed much less. Most of the differences in the LR predictions were directly attributable to differences among the COD models, but a portion was attributable to the treatment of crack face pressure (CFP). The benchmark identified several aspects of an LBB analysis that could support a more realistic evaluation.

In the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi (1F) Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to understand characteristics of the melted core materials. The estimation of boride in the real debris is of great importance to develop safe debris removal plans. Hence, it is required to investigate the amount of boron in the melted core materials with nondestructive methods. Prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) is one of the useful techniques to determine the amount of borides by means of the 478 keV prompt gamma-ray from neutron absorption reaction of boron. Moreover, it is well known that the width of the 478 keV gamma-ray peak is typically broadened due to the Doppler effect. The degree of the broadening is affected by coexisting materials, and can be recognized by the width of the prompt gamma-ray peak. As a feasibility study, the prompt gamma-ray from boride samples were measured using the ANNRI, NOBORU, and RADEN beamlines at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PARC).

In this study, we present a wireless, battery-free, skin-interfaced microfluidic system that combines lateral flow immunoassay for sweat cortisol assay, fluorometric imaging of glucose and ascorbic acid (vitamin C) assays, and digital tracking of sweat rate using electrodes that measure skin galvanic response. Systematic benchtop testing and on-body field studies on human subjects exercising in a gym environment highlight the key multifunctional features of this platform in tracking the biochemical correlates of physical stress.

Dose coefficients for external exposures to environmental sources

The age-dependent dose coefficients of organ equivalent doses and effective doses for the member of the public are required to estimate the external dose of the public exposed to radiations from radionuclides in the environment. For this purpose, a computational method to simulate the radiation fields of environmental photon and electron sources in the air, soil, and water has been developed using a particle transport code PHITS in the JAEA, and the organ equivalent doses have been calculated using the human models of newborns, 1-year-old, 5-years-old, 10-years-old, and 15-years-old children, and adults male and female provided by the ICRP. In addition, the nuclide-specific effective dose coefficients have been derived using the skin-dose data and nuclide-decay data provided by the Hanyang University and ICRP, respectively. The data of the dose coefficients are available for dose estimations of not only the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident but radiological emergencies which radionuclides are released to the environment.

Magnons and phonons are fundamental quasiparticles in a solid and can be coupled together to form a hybrid quasi-particle. However, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian of this particle are rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored, although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour and intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in non-collinear antiferromagnets, a strong magnon phonon coupling can significantly enhance the anharmonicity, resulting in the creation of magnetoelastic excitations and their spontaneous decay. By measuring the spin waves over the full Brillouin zone and carrying out anharmonic spin wave calculations using a Hamiltonian with an explicit magnon phonon coupling, we have identified a hybrid magnetoelastic mode in (Y,Lu)MnO$$_{3}$$ and quantified its decay rate and the exchange-striction coupling termrequired to produce it.

The decay of a $$K^{pi}$$ = 8$$^{-}$$ isomer in $$^{244}$$Pu and the collective band structure populating the isomer are studied using deep inelastic excitations with $$^{47}$$Ti and $$^{208}$$Pb beams, respectively. Precise measurements of $$M1/E2$$ branching ratios in the band confirm a clean 9/2$$^-$$[734]$$_{nu}$$$$otimes$$7/2$$^+$$[624]$$_{nu}$$ for the isomer, validating the systematics of K$$^{pi}$$ = 8$$^{-}$$ two-quasineutron isomers observed in even-$$Z$$, $$N$$ = 150 isotones. These isomers around the deformed shell gap at $$N$$ = 152 provide critical benchmarks for theoretical predictions of single-particle energies in this gateway region to superheavy nuclei.

Cancer therapy using heavy ion beam has been adopted as highly advanced medical treatment by reason of its clinical advantages. It has become more important to estimate the risk of secondary cancer from recent survey. During treatment, secondary particles such as neutrons and -rays are producedby heavy ion induced nuclear reactions in a patient body as well as beam delivery apparatuses. For the risk assessment of secondary cancer, it is essential to know contribution of secondary neutrons by extra dose to organs in the vicinity of the irradiated tumor because the secondary neutron has a long flight path length and gives undesired dose to normal tissues in a wide volume. The experimental data of neutron energy spectra are required for dose estimations with high accuracy. Especially, precise data around neutron energy of 1 MeV is required because neutron of the energy region has a large relative biological eectiveness. Estimation of the secondary neutron yield data is important for estimation of radiation safety on both of workers and public in treatment facilities.
