In this study, we compare the therapeutic effect between [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt and [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. In vitro analysis of double-stranded DNA break (DSB) and colony formation assay were performed using K1-NIS cells. [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt induced higher numbers of DSBs and had a reduced colony formation than [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. In K1-NIS mice, dose-dependent therapeutic effects were observed in both [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt and [$$^{131}$$I]NaI. The superior therapeutic effect of [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt suggests the promising clinical applicability of targeted alpha therapy using [$$^{211}$$At]NaAt in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer refractory to standard [$$^{131}$$I]NaI treatment.

We identified two energetic electron precipitation (EEP) events during the growth phase of moderate substorms and estimated the mesospheric ionization rate for an EEP event for which the most comprehensive dataset from ground-based and space-born instruments was available. The mesospheric ionization signature reached below 70 km altitude and continued for ~15 min until the substorm onset, as observed by the PANSY radar and imaging riometer at Syowa Station in the Antarctic region. We also used energetic electron flux observed by the Arase and POES 15 satellites as the input for the air-shower simulation code PHITS to quantitatively estimate the mesospheric ionization rate. Combining the cutting-edge observations and simulations, we shed new light on the space weather impact of the EEP events during geomagnetically quiet times, which is important to understand the possible link between the space environment and climate.

Two-dimensional scintillation neutron detectors for the extension of SENJU diffractometer

Nakamura, Tatsuya; To, Kentaro; Koizumi, Tomokatsu; Kiyanagi, Ryoji; Ohara, Takashi; Ebine, Masumi; Sakasai, Kaoru

Proceedings of 2020 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS/MIC 2020), Vol.1, p.483 - 484, 2021/09

Two-dimensional neutron detectors were developed for the extension of SENJU time-of-flight Laue single crystal neutron diffractometer in J-PARC MLF. The detectors are to be installed at the additional detector bank for the SENJU instrument. The detector module is made based on ZnS scintillator and wavelength-shifting fiber technology, where each detector module maintains a neutron-sensitive area of 256$$times$$256 mm with a pixel size of 4$$times$$4 mm. To meet the tight space limitation in the instrument, the detector was designed as compact as possible. The detector has a depth of 170 mm, which is about 40% smaller than that of the original SENJU detector. All four produced detectors exhibited similar detector performances: detection efficiency 50-60% for 2-${AA}$ neutron, $$^{60}$$Co gamma-ray sensitivity 1$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$, count uniformity 3-6%.

We developed a spin-contrast-variation neutron powder diffractometry technique that extracts the structure factor of hydrogen atoms, namely, the contribution of hydrogen atoms to a crystal structure factor. Crystals of L-glutamic acid were dispersed in a dpolystyrene matrix containing 4-methacryloyloxy-2,2,6,6,-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy (TEMPO methacrylate) to polarize their proton spins dynamically. The intensities of the diffraction peaks of the sample changed according to the proton polarization, and the structure factor of the hydrogen atoms was extracted from the proton-polarization dependent intensities. This technique is expected to enable analyses of the structures of hydrogen-containing materials that are difficult to determine with conventional powder diffractometry.
