The Philippines may profit from extracting uranium (U) from phosphoric acid during fertilizer production in a way that the recovered U can be beneficiated and taken as raw material for nuclear reactor fuel. Used in a high temperature reactor (HTR) that provides electricity and/or process heat for fertilizer processing and U extraction, energy-neutral fertilizer production, an idea first proposed by Haneklaus et al., is possible. This paper presents a first case study of the concept regarding a representative phosphate fertilizer plant in the Philippines and exemplary HTR designs (HTR50S and GTHTR300C) developed by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Three different arrangements (version I-III), ranging from basic electricity supply to overall power supply including on site hydrogen production for ammonia conversion, are introduced and discussed.

Expansion of matter, heated and pressurized through the electron-ion energy exchange, gives rise to the spallative ablation at small fluences and gaseous outflow from a target in the case of large fluences. Ablation threshold is low in comparison with a longer nanosecond XRL.

Tritium migration behavior in the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP) employing a high-temperature electrolysis (HTE) process to produce hydrogen is estimated by a numerical analysis. Estimated tritium concentrations in the hydrogen product and in a tertiary heat transport fluid in heat exchangers in the HTE process are higher than the limit in drinking water defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and in effluent at the boundary of an unrestricted area defined by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), respectively. The effect of some countermeasures to reduce tritium concentrations in the hydrogen product and the tertiary heat transport fluid are evaluated. Decreasing the tritium permeation rate between the secondary and tertiary heat transport circuits by the proposed water injection which produces HTO from HT according to an isotope exchange reaction in the heat transport fluids is an effective measure to decrease the tritium concentrations.

. Residual stress and changes in mechanical properties caused by the ion irradiation and the effects of the subsequent annealing are studied. The occurrence of compressive residual stresses and increases in hardness and fracture toughness were found at the surface regions of as-irradiated specimens. It was found from the subsequent annealing that these quantities decreased gradually with raising the annealing temperature and returned to that of un-irradiated state at around 1173K. A most probable cause of the increases in the hardness and fracture toughness after the irradiation may, therefore, be the residual compressive stresses left in the irradiated surface region.
