In the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex, the purpose of the 3 GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS) is to accelerate a 1 MW, high-intensity proton beam. To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

Evaluation on laser quenching heat transfer mechanism using numerical method and improvement of quenching depth

Kitagawa, Yoshihiro; Shirahama, Takuma*; Kisohara, Naoyuki; Tsuboi, Akihiko

Dai-96-Kai Reza Kako Gakkai Koen Rombunshu (Internet), p.91 - 96, 2022/01

Laser scanning quenching is a locally and rapidly heat-treated process and has an advantage of no coolant required. Compared with conventional technique such as induction quenching, the region of laser quenching is about 0.5$$sim$$0.7mm in depth and it needs to be expanded for more applications or durability. For this purpose, the temperature distributions and transitions in materials during laser irradiation have been revealed by using a 3D heat transfer computer code, micro-structural observation and hardness transitions in depth direction. The results indicate the laser irradiation with low power and low scan speed condition allows deeper quenching area, but it also suggests the hardness of the deepest quenching area is degraded due to slow temperature decreasing rate after laser heat scanning. Multiple times continuous irradiation have been proposed and studied to resolve this hardness degradation, and maximum quenching depth of 1.4mm is obtained under three times irradiation and controlling its power and scan speed properly.

A database on the analyses of samples obtained from contaminated water in the circulating system of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station was built. This database contains the analyses of 25 samples of JAEA and 313 samples of TEPCO which have been published in FY 2011 to FY 2013. Also, as well as the analyses on contaminated water, the information on the stored and treated amount in accumulated water and the amount of produced waste, which has been published by TEPCO and which might be required in order to estimate the inventory of secondary waste (sludge, used vessels) generated by treatment of contaminated water are contained in this database. This technical report shows the function of this database and user manual with example and presents the FY2013 edition of database by appendix CD.

The spatial resolution of hydrothermal method grown zinc oxide (ZnO) scintillator was evaluated using X-ray laser focused with Fresnel zone plate. The fluorescence image of the ZnO scintillator was measured to be less than 10um using CCD camera coupled with a Schbartzchild expander mirror. The availability of large size ZnO crystal up to 3-inch is quite attractive for future lithography and imaging applications.

A new type of three dimensional tracking and proportional gas counter has been developed. Adopting a gating-grid system, performance of the detector becomes stable under the injection rate of charged particles less than 4$$times$$10$$^4$$ pps. It is a useful detection system for astrophysical experiments using radioactive nuclear beams, since the efficiency is so high as 100 %.

Investigation of structural and electronic properties in Ru perovskite oxides by XAFS measurements

Mizumaki, Masaichiro*; Yoshii, Kenji; Hinatsu, Yukio*; Doi, Yoshihiro*; Uruga, Tomoya*

Physica Scripta, T115, p.513 - 515, 2005/00

The electronic and structural properties of Ru oxides were investigated by utilizing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We estimate the valence of Ru in perovskite ruthenium oxides by XAS measurements. XAS measurements were carried out at room temperature around Ru K-edge. The valence of Ru in $$A$$$$_{2}$$ ($$A$$ = Ba, Sr)LnRuO$$_{6}$$ and $$A$$ ($$A$$ = Ca, Ba, Sr)RuO$$_{3}$$ was 4+. The valence of Ru in Ln$$_{3}$$RuO$$_{7}$$ was 5+. The valence of Ru in PbRuO$$_{3}$$ showed an intermediate value between 4+ and 5+. Theoretical calculation reproduced the experimental spectra. We analyzed XAS spectra and obtained information of local structure. The bond length between Ru and O was consistent with the results of neutron diffraction.
