Experimental characterization of high-energy component in extracted pulsed neutrons at the J-PARC spallation neutron source

This study explores high-energy neutron components of the extracted neutron beam at J-PARC pulsed neutron source using the foil activation method with threshold reactions. Foils of aluminum, gold, bismuth, niobium, and thulium were used to cover the neutron energy range from 0.3 MeV to 79.4 MeV. The experiment was performed using neutron beams of BL10 (NOBORU). The foils were irradiated by a neutron beam at 13.4 m from the moderator. To characterize high-energy neutron fields for irradiation applications, reaction rates in three different configurations with and without B$$_{4}$$C slit and Pb filter were examined. To compare the experiments with calculations given for the user, reaction rates for corresponding reactions were calculated by the PHITS code with the JENDL-3.2 and the JENDL dosimetry file. Although there was a systematic tendency in C/E (Calculation/Experiment) ratios for different threshold energies, which C/E ratio decreased as threshold energy increased up to 100 MeV, and all C/E ratios were in the range of 1.0$$pm$$0.2. This indicated that high-energy neutron calculations were adequate for the analysis of experimental data for NOBORU users.

The polarized $$^{3}$$He filter, which polarizes neutrons due to a large neutron absorption cross section of $$^{3}$$He with strong spin selectivity, becomes a convenient neutron spin filter (NSF) because it is operated immediately after its installation in beam lines without any neutron beam adjustments. For realizing such the NSF, a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system is indispensable for monitoring $$^{3}$$He nuclear spin polarization ${it P}$ of the NSF. We have developed the flexible NMR system based on adiabatic fast passage (AFP) and pulse NMR methods by using their complementary features. In comparing with the values of ${it P}$ obtained by neutron transmission measurement at the beam line 10 of the J-PARC, we measured the correlations between the AFP and pulse NMR signals as changing condition of temperature, amplitude and applying period of the radio frequency field for the pulse NMR, and so on. As the results, we confirmed that our system would function enough as the ${it P}$ monitor.

In polarized neutron experiments, it is interested in expanding measurable neutron energy region up to epithermal neutrons. For realizing this situation, a Polarized $$^{3}$$He Spin Flipper (PHSF) has a key role because it can polarize from cold to epithermal neutrons, and flip neutron spins by flipping the $$^{3}$$He nuclear spin direction. We have developed the portable PHSF consisting of a cylindrical glass cell filled with $$^{3}$$He gas which is installed a solenoid coil of 20 cm in diameter and 30 cm long. After polarizing the $$^{3}$$He gas by irradiating a laser light based on a SEOP technique, the PHSF is brought by hands to experimental areas with kept its polarization. We carried out the feasibility test on our portable PHSF in the MLF of J-PARC and demonstrated it worked well by evaluating flipping ratios of polarized neutrons and attempting to visualize magnetic fields generated by sample coils.

Estimation of geological structure around underground tunnel based on cross-correlation analyses of random continuous signals from small scale core drilling

We have studied a reflection imaging technique in which passive seismic signals from other construction activity such as drilling noise are used as a wave source in order to develop a low-cost measurement method inside underground gallery. In this paper, we show an application to data sets from Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory of Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The drilling was conducted with a main purpose of extraction rock core samples for rock mechanics research. The three-dimensional reflection imaging results and comparison with well observation are shown in this paper.

Influence of Great East Japan Earthquake on neutron source station in J-PARC

This report investigates the behavior, damage and restoration of a neutron source station of the MLF at the Great East Japan Earthquake and verified the safety design for emergency accidents in the neutron source station. In the MLF, after an occurrence of the Earthquake, strong quakes were detected at the instruments, the external power supply was lost, all of the circulators shut down automatically, and the hydrogen gas was released. The leakages of mercury, hydrogen and radio-activation gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between the shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines by subsidence around the building. But significant damages to the components were not found though the pressure drop of compressed air lines influenced on a target trolley lock system and so on. These results substantiated the validity of the safety design for emergency accidents in the source station, and suggested several points of improvement.

This report investigates behaviors and damages of each component in a neutron target station of the MLF at the J-PARC at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). At the date of the GEJE, in the MLF, strong quakes were detected at several instruments, an external power supply were lost, all of the circulation systems were shut down automatically, and a hydrogen gas was released as planned. Leakage of activation liquids and gases did not occur. While, the quakes made gaps between shield blocks and ruptured external pipe lines for air and water by subsidence. But significant damages on the components of the target station were not found though a loss of compressed air supply affected lock systems with air cylinders and pneumatic operation values. These results substantiated a validity of safety design on the target station for emergency accidents.

Application and validation of particle transport code PHITS in design of J-PARC 1 MW spallation neutron source

In the previous stage of the JSNS design, there was no reliable and convenient nucleon and meson nuclear particle transport code in the energy region above 20 MeV. Therefore, with the progress of the J-PARC project, the NMTC/JAM code (the PHITS code in present) had been developed. Aiming to the best neutronic performance, the PHITS code was fully applied to JSNS neutronics designs and several thousand calculation cases were done with complicated models for neutronic performance, shielding calculation, nuclear heat estimation and so on. JSNS is one of the first facilities in the world fully adapted such a simulation code to the neutronics design. In these calculations, note that the particle energies change by 12 decades and neutron fluxes reduce by 10 decades. To confirm the reliability of these calculations, neutron spectral intensity, radiation dose, residual radio-activity and so on were measured. As a result, the measured values were good agreement with the calculated values.

The J-PARC 1-MW pulsed spallation neutron source JSNS was successfully launched on 30th of May 2008. To demonstrate the unique features of the moderator design and the neutronic performance of JSNS the neutron spectral intensity, absolute neutron flux, and time structure of the neutron pulse shapes etc have been measured using several neutron instruments since then. The measured energy spectra clearly revealed the feature of the para-hydrogen, as expected when designing the moderator. The measured neutron flux below 0.4 eV agreed with the corresponding design value within $$pm$$20%, thus suggesting that the JSNS design calculations to have been reliable. World-class high-resolution diffraction data could be recorded due to the suitability of design of the moderators and the instruments. Another world-class high-intensity neutron flux was also capable of being demonstrated due to the unique design of the large cylindrical coupled moderator.

Light emitting FET based-on spatially selective doping of Eu in AlGaN/GaN HEMT

Light emitting field effect transistor (FET) based-on AlGaN/GaN high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) structure with spatially selective doping of rare-earth ions (REIs) as a luminescence center in the channel is proposed and investigated. Fabricated device showed excellent I-V characteristics as a transistor with gate control. By applying a drain bias of 20 V, red emission suggesting a luminescence from Eu ion was clearly observed. Applying a negative bias to the Schottky gate decreased the luminescence intensity.

Neutron beam shutter system of JSNS at J-PARC has been designed under a particular precondition that every shutter should be controlled and maintained independently. This is very important from viewpoints of usability and interlock system of JSNS. The biggest challenge we faced was that to meet a single shutter design on asymmetric and narrow angular intervals of JSNS beam-lines; 6.7$$^circ$$ in minimum and 12.7$$^circ$$ in maximum. To realize this precondition, a compact ball screw jack system sustaining a shutter gate with two shafts was designed. Rotating motion during open/close stroke is absorbed by a couple of oilless bearings (OILES corp.) fitted in every shaft guide. The assembly is driven by an electric servomotor.

We have designed the control systems of neutron beam shutters of the 1-MW spallation neutron source under the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) project. The control system was designed that users were able to open and/or close shutters at experimental halles during a beam-time and facility's personnel could move shutters near the shutter drive mechanism room at the maintenance period. Moreover, it was designed to keep the primary condition that personnels were allowed to enter the instrument room when the shutter is closed. This condition was integrated to the Personnel Protection System (PPS) to ensure the safety of the personnel. Components were also designed to enhance the reliability of the control system as follows: shutter close position is detected independently by two kinds of devices of a mechanical limit switch and a rotary encorder, and the power supply for the shutter system was connected with an UPS to prevent loss of signals in case of a power failure.

Construction of the JSNS shutter system

The neutron beam shutter system of JSNS target station in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) is now in the final stage of the construction. The JSNS shutter system consists of following components; (1) shutter base plates, (2) interstitial blocks, (3) shutter gates, (4) upper shielding blocks, (5) drive assemblies, (6) control systems, and (7) maintenance tools. This shutter system has 23 independent shutter gates and drive systems for each beam port, and its dimensions and materials have been designed to shield/provide the neutron beam of maximum size; 100 mm $$times$$ 100 mm. The detailed construction steps of our shutter system, especially in its alignment, will be presented in the session.
