Neutron scattering studies on short- and long-range layer structures and related dynamics in imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Alkyl-methyl-imidazolium ionic liquids C$$n$$mimX ($$n$$: alkyl-carbon number, X: anion) have short-range layer structures consisting of ionic and neutral (alkylchain) domains. To investigate the temperature dependences of the interlayer, interionic group, and inter-alkylchain correlations, we have measured the neutron diffraction (ND) of C$$n$$mimPF$$_6$$ ($$n$$ = 16, 9.5, 8). The quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) of C16mimPF$$_6$$ was also measured to study the dynamics of each correlation. C16mimPF$$_6$$ shows a first-order transition between the liquid (L) and liquid crystalline (LC) phases at $$T_{rm c}$$ = 394 K. C8mimPF$$_6$$ exhibits a glass transition at $$T_{rm g}$$ = 200 K. C9.5mimPF$$_6$$ has both transitions at $$T_{rm c}$$ = 225 K and $$T_{rm g}$$ = 203 K. In the ND experiments, all samples exhibit three peaks corresponding to the correlations mentioned above. The widths of the interlayer peak at ca. 0.2 $AA$^{-1}$$ changed drastically at the L-LC transitions, while the interionic peaks at ca. 1 $AA$^{-1}$$ exhibited a small jump at $$T_{rm c}$$. The peak position and area of the three peaks did not change much at the transition. The structural changes were minimal at $$T_{rm g}$$. The QENS experiments demonstrated that the relaxation time of the interlayer motion increased tenfold at $$T_{rm c}$$, while those of other motions were monotonous in the whole temperature region. The structural and dynamical changes are characteristic of the L-LC transition in imidazolium-based ionic liquids.

Recent progress of pulsed neutron sources has enabled energy-resolved analysis of neutron attenuation spectra, which include information on neutron scattering. In this study, a new analysis technique for small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is demonstrated. A clear difference is observed in the neutron attenuation spectra between steels with different nanostructures; this difference can be understood as arising from attenuation due to SANS. The neutron attenuation spectra, calculated from the corresponding SANS profiles, agree well with the experimentally observed attenuation spectra. This result indicates that measurement of neutron attenuation spectra may enable the development of a novel experimental technique, i.e. energy-resolved SANS (ESANS).

We have reported the first attempt with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and contrast variation small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments on model mixtures for industrial tyres conducted at the MLF of J-PARC. We performed time-of-flight SANS (TOF-SANS) experiments, employing neutrons with a wide range, which causes imperfect neutron polarization and variations in the coherent and incoherent scattering lengths. By carefully eliminating the effect of imperfect neutron polarization, separation of the partial scattering functions was successfully demonstrated for the ternary system styrene-butadiene-rubber/silica/carbon.

Pulsed neutron sources enable the simultaneous measurement of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and Bragg edge transmission. This simultaneous measurement is useful for microstructural characterization in steel. Since most steels are ferromagnetic, magnetic scattering contributions should be considered in both SANS and Bragg edge transmission analyses. An expression for the magnetic scattering contribution to Bragg edge transmission analysis has been derived. The analysis using this expression was applied to Cu steel. The ferrite crystallite size estimated from this Bragg edge transmission analysis with the magnetic scattering contribution was larger than that estimated using conventional expressions. This result indicates that magnetic scattering has to be taken into account for quantitative Bragg edge transmission analysis. In the SANS analysis, the ratio of magnetic to nuclear scattering contributions revealed that the precipitates consist of body-centered cubic Cu$$_{0.7}$$Fe$$_{0.3}$$ and pure Cu, which probably has 9R structure including elastic strain and vacancies. These results show that effective use of the magnetic scattering contribution allows detailed analyses of steel microstructure.

時間反転対称性(TRS)の破れた超伝導状態について調べるため、Pr(Os$$_{1-x}$$Ru$$_x$$)$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$とPr$$_{1-y}$$La$$_y$$Os$$_4$$Sb$$_{12}$$合金において零磁場ミュオンスピン緩和測定を行った。TRSは自発的な局所磁場の発生で知ることができる。両合金において磁場は最初は減少したが、Ru置換系ではLa置換系に比べて50%速い現象がみられた。この結果から、TRSは$$xgeq 0.6$$で抑制されるが、La置換系ではすべての濃度において残ることが明らかになった。この結果は結晶場励起子によるクーパー対形成によるTRSの破れた超伝導機構を支持するものである。

We report on transverse field muon spin rotation measurements of the superconducting penetration depth $$lambda$$ in newly discovered antiperovskite superconductor ZnNNi$$_3$$ in order to investigate the symmetry of order parameter. The penetration depth at $$T$$ = 0 K is estimated to be $$lambda$$(0) = 362(2) nm. Temperature dependence of muon spin relaxation rate $$sigma_v$$ shows $$sim T^2$$ dependence, suggesting unconventional superconductor.

Measurements of muon spin relaxation have been performed on Ce$$_2$$RhIn$$_{8-x}$$Sn$$_x$$ ($$x$$ = 0.0, 0.1, 0.5 and 0.7) single crystals down to 0.3 K. A clear muon spin precession signal was observed in $$x$$ = 0.0 and 0.1 samples due to antiferromagnetic ordering with magnetic volume fraction of $$sim$$75% below $$T_{rm N}$$. While an increase of relaxation rate was observed in $$x$$ = 0.5 below 0.5 K, no precession signal was observed, suggesting the suppression of antiferromagnetism with increasing Sn concentration.

At ambient pressure CeRhIn$$_5$$ is an incommensurate antiferromagnet with Neel temperature $$T_{rm N}$$ = 3.8 K. The application of pressure reduces $$T_{rm N}$$ and yields (1) a state in which AFM coexists with superconductivity, and then (2) a superconducting state in the absence of AFM. We report transverse-field muon spin relaxation ($$mu$$SR) measurements at pressures 2.07 and 2.26 GPa in the pure superconducting state of single-crystalline CeRhIn$$_5$$. $$mu$$SR is sensitive to the local field distribution produced by the vortex lattice in a mixed superconducting state, allowing a measurement of the magnetic field penetration depth $$lambda (T)$$. We measured $$lambda_{ab}(T)$$ for applied field along the $$c$$-axis as a function of temperature $$T$$, and find $$lambda_{ab}$$(0) = 372(5) nm and 338(6) nm for $$P$$ = 2.07 GPa and 2.26 GPa, respectively. The $$T$$-dependence of the superfluid density $$rho_s(T) propto lambda^{-2}(T)$$ was found to be $$rho_s(T) propto T^n$$ with $$n$$ = 1.9(2).

SmRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$の磁気多極子秩序相($$T<T_{rm MI}=16.5$$K)における磁気揺らぎの性質を調べるために詳細な縦磁場$$mu$$SR測定を行った。縦緩和率の縦磁場依存性より、揺動磁場の大きさ及び揺らぎの頻度が温度の関数として得られた。揺動磁場が磁気多極子の低エネルギー励起に起因する可能性について述べる。

The local effect of an interstitial hydrogenlike particle on localized $$f$$ electrons was studied in PrPb$$_3$$ by means of $$mu^+$$ spin rotation and relaxation. Spontaneous $$mu^+$$ spin precession with harmonic frequencies was observed for the first time in $$f$$ electron compounds. We demonstrate that the signal is derived from a coupling between the $$mu^+$$ spin and the hyperfine-enhanced nuclear spin of nearest neighbor (NN) $$^{141}$$Pr with Ising-like anisotropy. The signal also suggests a marked suppression of spin dynamics of the NN $$^{141}$$Pr in comparison with that of the bulk $$^{141}$$Pr. These facts strongly indicate modification of the $$f$$ electronic state due to the interstitial charged particle.
