A high-efficiency synthesis method for a latent pigment of red pigment diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole (Pig. Red 272:272DPP), which is important as a functional organic pigment, was investigated, and the investigation results revealed that irradiation of microwaves (MWs) for several seconds to 272 DPP in NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) solvent yielded DPP latent pigment (272DPP-BOC) at a high yield of 86.2%. Two kinds of latent-pigment crystals, namely, red and yellow, were obtained by recrystallization, and it was found that the fluorescence-emission properties of the two kinds differ significantly. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis showed that the difference in the fluorescence-emission properties of the two types is derived from the difference in their crystal structures.

In pbar target station, the pulsed proton beam with the power of around 75 kW and the time structure of 1.6 s pulse width and 2.2 s cycle time bombards the pbar production target and produces high instantaneous intensity neutron (burst neutron) fields. The duration of the burst neutrons, which is less than s, is very severe condition to measure neutron spectra with a conventional Bonner sphere technique with pulse readout electronics because of signal pile-up problem. In this study, we have developed a current readout Bonner sphere technique to measure neutron spectra in a burst neutron field. We have measured the neutron spectra on the pbar target and graphite dump. The neutron spectra obtained with the present technique show generally good agreements with the calculation results using MARS code except difference of the thermal neutron flux due to the geometrical problem.

Effects of compressive residual stress on fatigue strength on a laser peened aluminum alloy were investigated. The changes of the compressive residual stress were measured using X-ray diffraction. The residual stress was relaxed at the first loading cycle and after that the residual stress was almost kept until the final fracture. The number of fatigue cycles to failure could be predicted quantitatively if the compressive residual stress after the first loading cycle was estimated.

The first campaign of the experiment was carried out at the Pbar target station and Numi experimental station at FNAL, using antiproton and neutrino production targets irradiated by 120-GeV protons. The generated secondary particles passing through steel, concrete and rock were measured by activation methods as well as by other detectors such as scintillator with a veto counter, phoswich detector and a Bonner ball counter on trial. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

The neutron energy spectra were obtained by using the time-of-flight technique in the energy range from 10 MeV to incident proton energy. To compare the experimental results, Monte Carlo calculations with the PHITS and MCNPX codes were performed using the JENDL-HE and the LA150 evaluated nuclear data files, the ISOBAR model implemented in PHITS, and the LAHET code in MCNPX. It was found that these calculated results at 0 generally agreed with the experimental results in the energy range above 20 MeV except for graphite at 250 and 350 MeV.

Several multi-purpose high-energy radiation transport codes are used in many research fields such as high-energy physics as well as accelerator facility shielding designs. The codes are benchmarked against experimental data on a regular basis. To promote this to a higher level and to a hardly explored field of neutron radiation induced by energetic muons, a JASMIN collaboration (Japanese-American Study of Muon Interaction and Neutron detection), has been created with several Laboratories and Universities of Japan and U.S.A. The collaboration has performed a series of experiments at the Pbar target station and NuMI facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, using irradiation of targets with 120 GeV protons for antiproton and neutrino production. This paper reviews recent activities and results.

In accordance with the development of display devices, study of the organic pigment for colour filter (CF) has become an active area of research. In this manner, the latent pigment has been drawn attention because of its both robustness and solubilization to organic solvent where latent pigment has blocking groups to avoid molecular aggregation in order to solubilize to organic solvent. This latent pigment returns to original pigment by heating treatment. These properties advantage in the usability of pigment to form films and the onset of robustness to utilize as pigment. In this study, derivatives of diketo pyrrolo pyrole (DPP) as a red CF pigment were synthesized efficiently by microwave and produce latent pigment and its film and investigated their luminescence properties.

In this study, we have focused on the development of the bright color filter(CF) by the solubilization of pigment. The diketo pyrrolo pyrole(DPP) derivatives are one of the most important CF pigment for LCD as a red pigment. The efficient synthesis of the latent by the microwave and the fluorescence properties of the pigments were investigated by using a variety of the substituent groups and the number of the substituents on the pigment.
