Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

We have developed a 1 kHz regenerative amplifier using an Yb:Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ ceramic thin disk as the gain medium. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity and heat generation property of Yb: Y$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ ceramic were investigated. In the developed regenerative amplifier, a laser beam is bounced off the thin disk six times in each round trip. The output energy is over 2 mJ, spectral bandwidth is 1.8 nm at FWHM, and pulse duration after pulse compression is 0.9 ps.

Development of multi pass pumping module for thin disk laser material

We develop high repetitive and short pulse laser system using Yb doped laser ceramics for future laser application of generating high power tera-hertz wave for experimental proof of isotope separation and generating a Laser-Compton Scattering $$gamma$$-ray source for precise specific isotopes analysis. As these future laser applications needs very stable and high average power laser system, we develop thin disk laser system using Yb:YAG ceramics because of its large stored energy property and large thermal conductivity, which could avoid thermal induced effects and thermal fracture limitation due to large pumping power. A few hundred $$mu$$m thickness of thin disk laser material in laser amplifier needs multi pass optical components for enough absorption of pump power, the pumping profile and spot size on laser disk should be variable for required laser performance. We design multi pass pumping module for thin disk laser material which consists of commercial optical components and precise stages and also design doublet and triplet for various pumping profile and spot size, the laser oscillation power is evaluated with this pumping module.

We have constructed a high power kHz laser system using Yb:YAG thin-disk as a gain medium for a driver laser of THz wave generation. A 4-bounce regenerative amplifier is constructed and output energy up to 10 mJ is obtained. Using compressed pulse, we demonstrated THz wave generation with LiNbO$$_{3}$$ crystal.

We describe three specific high power laser systems that are being developed in our laboratory for many applications in high field science, nonlinear optics and material processing. We report on a femtosecond petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can produce a pulse energy of 20 J of 40 fs pulse duration, a picosecond high intensity Yb:YAG chirped-pulse amplification laser system that can generate a pulse energy of 100 mJ of 0.5 ps pulse duration, and a nanosecond high repetition rate Nd:YAG laser system that can provide an average power of 360 W with a pulse duration of 30 ns delivered at a 1 kHz repetition rate. We discuss the basic design aspects and present the results from our experimental investigations of these laser systems.

Minimum condition of target gas material at an ionization-stage control scheme in a laser-plasma electron acceleration

We report on the appropriate and inappropriate gas materials to generate energetic electrons. The 4-TW peak power and 40-fs pulse duration laser beam illuminated the gas-jet target with intensity of 9$$times$$10$$^{17}$$W/cm$$^{2}$$ measured in vacuum. We investigated energetic electron beam generation using neon and argon. Energetic electron beam was observed in argon at the lowest neutral gas density of 5$$times$$10$$^{18}$$cm$$^{-3}$$. However, no energetic electrons ($$>$$ 1 MeV, $$>$$ 1 pC) were observed in neon although neutral gas density is increased from5$$times$$10$$^{18}$$cm$$^{-3}$$ to 5$$times$$10$$^{19}$$cm$$^{-3}$$. By considering ionization stage at such an intensity, the maximum plasma density is reached to be a quarter critical plasma density, at which the maximum growth-rate of laser-plasma instability is expected. On the other hand, propagation of the pumping laser was observed in neon and argon by using optical probing. Significantly different images were observed. The structure of the laser channel for energetic electron beam generation that observed in argon was absent in neon. These results imply that the additional increase of the plasma density due to ionization cannot explain the electron generation. The analysis including the propagation of a laser in ionizing gas would be necessary.

Current status and future prospects of "J-KAREN"; High contrast, high intensity laser for studying relativistic laser-matter interactions

We present the design and characterization of a high-contrast, petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) laser system. Two saturable absorbers and low-gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) preamplifier in the double CPA laser chain have improved the temporal contrast to 1.4$$times$$10$$^{12}$$ on the subnanosecond time scale at 70 terawatt level. Final uncompressed broadband pulse energy is 28 J, indicating the potential for reaching peak power near 600 terawatt. We also discuss our upgrade to over petawatt level at a 0.1 Hz repetition rate briefly.

Polarization-selectable cavity locking method for generation of laser Compton scattered $$gamma$$-rays

Nowadays, generation of energy-tunable, monochromatic $$gamma$$-rays is needed to establish a nondestructive assay method of nuclear fuel materials. The $$gamma$$-rays are generated by collision of laser photons stored in a cavity and relativistic electrons. We propose a configuration of an enhancement cavity capable of performing polarization control fabricated by a combination of a four-mirror ring cavity with a small spot inside a cavity and a three-mirror of reflective optics as an image inverter for polarization-selectable $$gamma$$-rays. The image inverter introduces a phase shift of specific polarization which can be used to generate an error signal to lock an optical cavity at a resonance condition.

High-intensity laser and thin-foil interactions produce high-energy particles, hard X-ray, high-order harmonics, and terahertz radiation. A proton beam driven by a high-intensity laser has received attention as a compact ion source for medical and other applications. We have measured the proton yield from thin-foil targets irradiated with a high-intensity Ti:sapphire laser (J-KAREN) at JAEA. The longitudinal extent of the preformed plasma protruding from the front surface of the target is reduced by decreasing the duration of the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) before the main pulse. The maximum proton energy in the target normal direction increases when the size of the preformed plasma is controlled.

We designed and fabricated high damage-resistant AR coating using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers. As a result of irradiation test using 500 ps pulses at 1 kHz, the damage threshold of the AR coating was estimated to be over 36 J/cm$$^{2}$$ (average value). We also fabricated high reflection (HR) mirrors using Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers added on Ta$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ layers and measured damage threshold of them for 7 ns, 500 ps, and 1 ps pulses.

Xe K-shell X-ray generation using conical nozzle and 25 TW laser

To increase X-ray photon number generated by laser-cluster interaction, it is important to understand the dependence of X-ray generation on cluster size. We carried out Xe K-shell X-ray generation using a conical nozzle with Xe clusters, the radius of which was controllable by adjusting the backing pressure. The experiment clarifies the result that the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number increases with increasing cluster radius from 8 to 12 nm, and saturates at the radius between 12 and 17 nm. We also investigated the Xe K-shell X-ray photon number dependence on laser intensity, and found that the threshold laser intensity of the Xe K-shell X-ray generation exists between 2$$times$$10$$^{17}$$ and 5$$times$$10$$^{18}$$ W/cm$$^2$$.

This paper reviews techniques for improving the temporal contrast and spatial beam quality in an ultra-intense laser system that is based on chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). We describe the design, performance, and characterization of our laser system, which has the potential for achieving a peak power of 600 TW. We also describe applications of the laser system in the relativistically dominant regime of laser-matter interactions and discuss a compact, high efficiency diode-pumped laser system.

Negative effect of crystallization on the mechanism of laser damage in a HfO$$_{2}$$/SiO$$_{2}$$ multilayer

Elucidation of the mechanisms of laser damage is indispensable in realizing high resistance mirrors for the next generation of ultra-short pulse high intensity lasers. In this study, the surface and a section of the laser-damaged area of a laser mirror were observed with a laser microscope and a transmission electron microscope (cross-sectional TEM), respectively. A grain boundary of HfO$$_{2}$$ microcrystal was observed in the damaged area. This observation, and an evaluation of the mirror's damage resistance showed that the formation of crystals in the multilayer mirror is one of the major determinants of damage resistance.

The bow wave induced mechanism of high-order harmonics generation was discovered using simulations and catastrophe theory. This mechanism feasibility was successfully demonstrated in 3D and 2D PIC simulations. The mechanism and the simulations explained high-order harmonics in the XUV spectral region seen in recent experiments with terawatt lasers. Development of new XUV light and X-ray source based on the high-order harmonics generation mechanism is proposed.
