Co-seismic surface ruptures in the Fukushima-ken Hamadori Earthquake of Mw 6.7 on April 11, 2011 exposed approximately 14 km trending NNW-SSE from Nameishi to northwest of Ishizumi Tsunaki of Tabito Town, Iwaki City and were newly named the Shionohira Fault. However, no surface ruptures appeared along an N-S trending active Kuruma fault extending 5 km south of the Shionohira Fault. Because of the proximity and similar strike, two locations in Shionohira Fault and one location in Kuruma fault were selected as the study area for the fault activity evaluation. The present study reports the results of a series of geological and drilling surveys, core observation, XRD, isotope, and fluid inclusion analyses, and water permeability test. The results obtained from the three locations offer a fundamental data base that can be utilized for fault activity evaluation by summarizing the geological, mineralogical, and fluid property characteristics of fault fracture zone.

In this paper, we studied the crystal structure and phonon dynamics of tetrahedrites (Cu,Zn)(Sb,As)S. The results revealed that the Cu atoms in a planar coordination are rattling, which effectively scatter phonons. These findings provide a new strategy for the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials with planar coordination.

A long-term durability of VITON, AFLAS, denaturated polyphenylene ether, and Kapton polyimide immersed in a sulfonic acid was demonstrated. Negligible degradation in percent elongation at break of these polymeric materials was observed up to the immersing period of 2 years. The detectable radiation deterioration in ionic conductivity of Nafion N117CS ion exchange membrane irradiated with electron beams up to the integrated dose of 1500 kGy was measured. The ionic conductivity of Nafion N117CS ion exchange membrane irradiated at more than 1000 kGy was slightly deteriorated. As for the elastomers for its use as a seal, the radiation degradation in hardness of VITON, AFLAS was investigated. Negligible degradation in hardness of these rubbers was observed up to the integrated dose of 1500 kGy. The water uptake of rubbers was generally increased as the integrated dose was increased. However, irradiated VITON rubbers had constant water uptake up to the integrated dose of 1500 kGy.

The complex composed of two GCSFs and two GCSF receptors was crystallized. The crystal of the complex was grown in 1.0 M sodium formate and 0.1 M sodium acetate (pH4.6). It belongs to the space group 422 (or its enantiomorph 422) with unit cell dimensions of = = 110.1 , = 331.8 . However, the diffraction data from the crystal beyond 5 resolution could not be collected. Since the heterogeneity of GCSF receptor seems to interrupt growth of good quality crystals, the GCSF receptor was fractionated by achromatography. Crystals of GCSF/fractionated GCSF receptor complex were grown as a new crystal form in 0.2 M ammonium phosphate. The new crystal diffracts beyond 3.0 resolution and belongs to space group 321 (or its enantiomorph 321) with unit-cell parameters = = 134.8, = 105.7 .

The relationship between the amount of radionuclide to be solidified and the solidified body temperature was analyzed, when solidify contaminated water management waste at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station with cement etc. at low temperature. The analysis code used the radiation transport code and the thermal analysis code. Thus, the limit value by radionuclide concentration during solidification process are evaluated. The summary of the test and some of the obtained results are introduced.

In the Ningyo-toge uranium mine, Okayama, Japan, various toxic elements such as U, As, and Ra are present in the mine wastewaters, of which the concentration except for Ra in the wastewater decrease below the regulatory limit by transport to the slag dumping pond. The mechanisms of decreasing their concentrations in the wastewaters are not fully understood. In order to understand the fundamental processes of natural attenuation at this site, we have investigated the wastewaters and solids from upstream to the pond at the downstream. Wastewater was contacted with oxygenated water and the amount of dissolved oxygen increased. Simultaneously dissolved ferrous iron was oxidized to form ferrihydrite nanoparticles, which are associated with silica colloids, As and U. The ferrihydrite nanoparticles as suspended colloids were transported to the pond in downstream, where the waste stream is completely oxidized. In the slag dumping pond, Mn dioxide, birnessite, dominantly occurs forming a mixture with ferrihydrite + silica colloid, which has a potential to adsorb Ra. Consequently, Fe hydroxides nanoparticles and Mn dioxides in Ningyo-toge play a key role on removing U, As and Ra from the wastewater.
