The decommissioning is currently in progress at the prototype fast breeder reactor Monju. Fuel assemblies will be taken out of its core for the first step of the great task. Fuel assemblies stand on their own spike plugged into a socket on the core support plate and support with adjacent assemblies through their housing pads each other, resulting in steady core structure. For this reason, some substitutive assemblies are necessary for the purpose of discharging the fuel assemblies of the core. Monju side commissioned, therefore, Plutonium Fuel Development Center to manufacture the substitutive assemblies and the Center accepted it. This report gives descriptions of design, manufacture, and shipment in regard to the substitutive assemblies.

Precise determination of $$^{12}_{Lambda}$$C level structure by $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy

Level structure of the $$^{12}_{Lambda}$$C hypernucleus was precisely determined by means of $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy. We identified four $$gamma$$-ray transitions via the $$^{12}$$C$$(pi^{+},K^{+}gamma)$$ reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The spacing of the ground-state doublet $$(2^{-}, 1^{-}_{1})$$ was measured to be $$161.5pm0.3$$(stat)$$pm0.3$$ (syst)keV from the direct $$M1$$ transition. Excitation energies of the $$1^{-}_{2}$$ and $$1^{-}_{3}$$ states were measured to be $$2832pm3pm4$$, keV and $$6050pm8pm7$$, keV, respectively. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of $$Lambda$$ hypernuclei.

Wideband low-output-impedance RF system for the second harmonic cavity in the ISIS synchrotron has been developed by the collaboration between ANL (US), KEK (Japan) and RAL (UK). Low output impedance is realized by the feedback from plate to grid of the final triode amplifier, resulting in less than 30 ohms over a wide frequency range of 2.7 - 6.2 MHz. The vacuum tubes in the driver and final stages are both operated in class A. High power test was performed with a ferrite-loaded second harmonic cavity, where the bias current was swept at 50 Hz repetition rate. The maximum voltage of 12 kV peak per accelerating gap was obtained stably at earlier period of an acceleration cycle. A beam test with this system is planned at the ISIS synchrotron soon.

This report summarizes the activity (FY2000-2003) of Working Group (WG) on Evaluation of Nuclide Generation and Depletion under Subcommittee on Nuclear Fuel Cycle of Japanese Nuclear Data Committee. In the WG, analyses of Post Irradiation Examinations have been carried out for UO$$_{2}$$ and MOX fuels irradiated in PWRs, BWRs and FBRs, and for actinide samples irradiated in fast reactors, by using ORIGEN or more detailed calculation codes with their libraries based on JENDL-3.2, JENDL-3.3 and other foreign nuclear data files. From these results, current prediction accuracy and problems for evaluation of nuclide generation and depletion are discussed. Furthermore, this report covers other products of our activity; development of the ORIGEN libraries for PWR, BWR and FBR based on JENDL-3.3, study on introduction of neutron spectrum index to ORIGEN calculations, and results of questionnaire survey on desirable accuracy of ORIGEN calculations.

An Overview of the MIZ-1 Borehole Investigations during Phase I/II

The MIZ-1 borehole investigation programme was launced in December 2002, as a step of the surface-based investigations at the MIU Site. In MIZ-1 Phase I/II (from March to May 2003), the borehole was drilled down to 123m in the uppermost part of the basement granite and geological, geophysical, hydrogeological and hydrochemical investigations were performed. Quality-controlled data on geology, hydrogeology and hydrochemistry of the sedimentary overburden and the basement granite were acquired, therby advancing the understanding of the shallow geological environment at the MIU Site. In addition, from technical and QC viewpoints, a range of successes and set-backs was produced and lessons and feedback from the achievements were obtained.

Neutron diffraction study of cubic insulin at two different pDs

It is known that the protonation status of amino acid side chains can strongly affect the biological function and stability of a protein. It is often hard to estimate it because it depends also on the local environment of the side chain. Neutron diffraction is a powerful tool to observe hydrogen atoms because of its strong interaction with hydrogen. Thus, a neutron study of cubic insulin at pD 6 has been carried out using the BIX-4 diffractometer (JRR-3, JAEA) and the result was compared with the previous neutron study at pD 9 (Maeda, et al. 2004) and by X-ray at pH 6 (Diao, 2003). A large single crystal of cubic insulin was prepared based on the crystallization phase diagram. The crystal diffracted to 2.5 ${AA}$ resolution. It was found that only N$$_{pi}$$ of His 5 in the B-chain is protonated whereas both N$$_{pi}$$ and N$$_{tau}$$ of His10 in the B-chain is protonated at pD 6 and the results at pD 9 are also the same (the pK of histidine side chains in the free form is around 6.0). These indicate that neutron diffraction study is useful to determine the protonation status of a protein.

In protein molecules, key energetic contributors are solvation, desolvation and hydrogen bonding. They contribute protein folding, dynamics and molecular recognition. As a result, more elaborate studies of hydrogen atoms will be great help to recognize protein structures and obtain new findings of them. However, we do not have system which dedicated to characterization and analysis of hydrogen bonding. Therefore, we have developed a database for hydrogen and hydration water molecules. That database named Hydrogen and Hydration Database for Biomolecules (HHDB). Hydrogen bond data stored to HHDB use hydrogen atom coordinates determined directly by neutron diffraction and certain extremely high resolution X-ray diffraction. HHDB provides graphical user interface, users can use it through web browser. HHDB can visualize hydrogen atom positions in protein and solvent, and hydrogen bonding interactions. Fig. 1 shows HHDB plot example. In this plot, hydrogen atom is placed at the origin, and each point represents hydrogen bond distance and angle. We are improving the web user interfaces and the performance for usability.

In accordance with the basic research for the material development, we investigate a numerical scheme for large scale parallel numerical simulation of a quantum condensate. In solving the time evolution of PDEs, FFT plays an important role to give a high accuracy numerical scheme. However, we find many numerical examples in which an accumulated error by FFT becomes large in the long time numerical simulations. We examine the application of the quad precision FFT to avoid the accumulated error.

Improvement of maintenance management method of valvegasket in cell in Low radioactive liquid waste treatment process in Tokai Reprocessing Plant

Approximately 70 valves (three-part ball valves) are installed in cells related to the low-radioactive liquid waste treatment process at the Tokai Reprocessing Plant. In order to prevent liquid leakage from the joints of these valves, we investigated the relationship between the sealing material of the joints and the tightening force of bolts, practiced maintenance management of the valves using a bolt/nut tightening management method (torque management) that takes into account the characteristics of gaskets (PTFE), and report the results obtained.
