Adsorption behavior of lanthanide ions on nonbiological phospholipid membranes; A Model study using liposome

Yamasaki, Shinya; Shirai, Osamu*; Kano, Kenji*; Kozai, Naofumi; Sakamoto, Fuminori; Onuki, Toshihiko

Chemistry Letters, 42(8), p.819 - 821, 2013/08

The adsorption behavior of lanthanide ions (except for Pm) on liposomes composed of phosphatidylcholine and cholesterol was examined to understand the interaction between lanthanide ions and the phosphoryl moiety of phospholipids. The adsorption of lanthanide ions increased with an increase in pH under the weakly acidic conditions. Selective adsorption with the local maximum at the Er$$^{3+}$$ ion and local minimum at the Er$$^{3+}$$ ion was observed, similar to the selective adsorption of the bacterial cell surface but different from that of orthophosphates. These results indicate that the adsorption of lanthanide on the phospholipid does not result from simple adsorption on orthophosphate functional groups but by the composition and molecular structure of the phospholipid. Our results strongly suggest that liposomes can be used as a simple biomembrane model without any biological activity for the study of adsorption of lanthanide ions.

The ion transport current was clearly observed across a bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) between two aqueous phases (W1, W2) containing 0.1 M CsCl. In addition, the current density at a given potential between W1 and W2 increased using I instead of Cl as the counter ion. Our results strongly suggest that the cell membrane transport is partially responsible for the internal exposure of $$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs.

Potential-controlled electrolysis was performed between two aqueous phases containing 0.1 M NaCl across a bilayer lipid membrane in the presence of dipicrylaminate (DPA$$^{-}$$). By use of radioisotope ($$^{22}$$Na), it has been confirmed that Na$$^{+}$$ is transported mainly and that DPA$$^{-}$$ serves as a carrier of Na$$^{+}$$ transport.

Ion transport across a bilayer lipid membrane in the presence of a hydrophobic ion or an ionophore

Shirai, Osamu*; Uehara, Akihiro*; Yamana, Hajimu*; Onuki, Toshihiko; Yoshida, Yumi*; Kihara, Sorin*

Journal of Nuclear and Radiochemical Sciences, 6(1), p.55 - 60, 2005/07

The ion transport from one aqueous phase (W1) to another (W2) across a bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) in a cell system in the presence of a hydrophobic ion or an ionophore was investigated by voltammetry. The hydrophobic ion was distributed into the BLM with the counter ion to hold the electroneutrality within the BLM. It was pointed out that the counter ion could transfer between W1 and W2 across the BLM since concentrations of the counter ion in W1, BLM and W2 were so high as to cause the ion transfer current while concentrations of the hydrophobic ion were very low. The facilitated transports of alkali ions across a BLM containing valinomycin (Val) used as an ionophore were also investigated by considering the hydrophobicity of both the objective cation and the counter anion and the formation of the alkali metal ion-Val complex..

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.

This paper describes the results of primary auxiliary cooling system, which were done as a part of JOYO MK-III function test. The aim of the tests was to confirm the operational performance of primary auxiliary EMP and the protection system including siphon breaker of primary auxiliary cooling ststem. The items of the tests were:(1) Test No.:SKS-117/Test item/EMP start up test (2) Test No.:SKS-118-1/Test item:EMP start up test when pony mortor running (3) Test NO.:SKS-121/Test item:Function test of siphon breaker The results of the tests satisfied the required performance, and demonstrated succeccful operation of primary auxiliary cooling system.

Sodium combustion analyses were performed using ASSCOPS version 2.1 in order to obtain background data for evaluating validity of the mitigation system against secondary sodium leak of MONJU. The analytical results of floor temperature and hydrogen concentration were summarized in this report. In the sodium combustion analyses under the detailed design conditions, it was confirmed that the temperature rise of the floor liner was reduced In addition, as for the hydrogen concentration in sodium leak process which is formed by the reaction of sodium and moisture, it was confirmed that it is restricted under 4% of the hydrogen burn criterion. Concerning the hydrogen concentration due to the reaction with sodium and sodium hydroxide in the sodium pool after the storing, in the same way, it was confirmed that it is restricted under 4% of the criterion.

This paper describes operational experiences of JOYO Secondary Sodium Purification System which were obtained from April 1990 to March 1995. And, the operational problem of Secondary Sodium Purification System with MK-III core conversion were mentioned in this report. The experience results were as follows. (1)The number of cases of the secondary purification system trouble was 12. Those troubles, however, did not affect to the operation of the plant. (2)As the result of investigation about possibility of using secondary cold trap after MK-III core conversion, amount of trapped impurity was estimated 9.4kg as of January, 1994. In addition, 25.2kg was the estimated amount of trapped impurity at sodium initial purification after MK-III core conversion. It was subtantial excess of original design(18kg). (3)The change of heat transfer characteristics of secondary cold trap economizer occurred about two years after the modification of cold trap control tempereture. It seemed to be led by condition change of sticking impurity to heat transfer tubes which was followed by the modification of set up temperature. When set up temperature had been kept low, heat transfer characteristics was better. (4)A large quantity of sodium vapor was identified on the secondary argon gas system pressure control header. The influence of engulfing of argon gas at over flow line of Secondary Sodium Purification System is concerned.

Redox behavior of cytochrome c3 on the polyelectrolyte modified electrode and U(VI) reduction

Suzuki, Yoshinori; Nankawa, Takuya; Onuki, Toshihiko; Taketa, Midori*; Higuchi, Yoshiki*; Tsujimura, Seiya*; Shirai, Osamu*; Kano, Kenji*

no journal, ,

Redox behavior of cytochrome c3 (cyt. c3) on the polyelectrolyte modified electrode was investigated by concurrent measurements of SOWG spectra and cyclic voltammetry. These measurements suggest that cyt. c3 desorbed from the elctrode as cyt. c3 was reduced. In the presence of U(VI), an electorcatalytic reduction of U(VI) by cyt. c3 was observed.
