Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.00(Physics, Applied)Lithium-containing scintillators are used for neutron detection; Li-containing scintillators detect tritons and alpha rays produced by neutrons. Since these particles deposit higher energy than gamma rays, Li-containing scintillators can separate gamma rays and neutrons. However, the luminescence efficiency of scintillator decreases for ion beams due to a phenomenon called the quenching effect. Evaluation of the quenching effect is necessary to accurately separate neutrons and gamma rays. The Birks equation is used to predict the scintillation efficiency change due to the quenching effect, but it is necessary to determine the quenching coefficient in the Birks equation. In this study, we used PHITS to calculate the luminescence of Li-containing scintillators considering the quenching effect based on Birks' equation with the quenching coefficient as a free parameter. Then, by comparing the simulated results with the experimentally obtained luminescence, the extinction coefficients of Li glass, Ce:LiCaAlF, and Eu:LiCaAlF
scintillators were determined.

The relationship between hydrogen embrittlement and lattice defects associated with hydrogen was also investigated. The amount of lattice defects increased gradually with increasing time of applied stress. The specimen fractured under elastic stress. The enhanced vacancies due to interactions between dislocations and hydrogen under elastic stress directly caused ductility loss. Even though hydrogen was completely removed by degassing the vacancies remain. Besides hydrogen content and applied stress, the time of formation and accumulation of vacancies are also concluded to be important factors causing hydrogen embrittlement.

The knowledge of the interaction between organic molecules and semiconductor surfaces plays an important role in adapting organic semiconductors into the semiconductor technology. In the present study, the process of -sexithiophene (
-6T) thin layer formation on passivated silicon (Si) surfaces has been investigated in-situ by means of PES, angle-depended NEXAFS (near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure), SDRS, and RDS. For water-adsorbed Si(001), it was found that the majority of
-6T molecules are standing on the substrate. Above 3 nm, most of molecules are standing and constitute well ordered islands or films. For ethylene adsorbed Si(001) on the contrary, some of
-6T molecules are flat-lying, resulting in less prominent orientation. Thus, the orientation of molecules depends on the method of passivation, which opens the possibility of controlling the molecular orientation by the surface modification.

We have just begun to discuss the configuration of the advanced Supervisory Control System (SVCS) including the following systems: (1) ultimately flexible real-time control system, (2) precise timing system enough to clarify cause and effect, and (3) safety shutdown control system. We believe the following experimental issues are expected to be solved in JT-60. To clarify how to keep a steady-state plasma with high performance, and how to avoid plasma instabilities almost completely. By stimulus of this motivation, several essential development and modifications of plasma control and data acquisition systems have been performed in JT-60. In this report, we discuss the developments to improve the JT-60 plasma control and data acquisition systems. In addition, a future plasma control and data acquisition systems leading to a standard design for a power reactor is envisaged on the basis of the 20-year plasma operation experiences.

Rf reaction has been studied by anion-exchange chromatography on an atom-at-a-time scale. The anion-exchangechromatographic behavior of Rf was investigated in 1.9-13.9 M hydrofluoric acid together with those of the group-4 elements Zr and Hf produced in the
O-induced reactions on Ge and Gd targets, respectively. It was found that the adsorption behavior of Rf on anion-exchange resin is quite different from those of Zr and Hf, suggesting the influence of relativistic effect on the fluoride complexation of Rf.
