Overview of event progression of evaporation to dryness caused by boiling of high-level liquid waste in Reprocessing Facilities

Risk information obtained from probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of measures against severe accidents in nuclear facilities. The PRA methods used for reprocessing facilities are considered immature compared to those for nuclear power plants, and to make the methods mature, reducing the uncertainty of accident scenarios becomes crucial. In this paper, we summarized the results of literature survey on the event progression of evaporation to dryness caused by boiling of high-level liquid waste (HLLW) which is a severe accident in reprocessing facilities and migration behavior of associated radioactive materials. Since one of the important characteristics of Ru is its tendency to form volatile compounds over the course of the event progression, the migration behavior of Ru is categorized into four stages based on temperature. Although no Ru has been released in the waste in the high temperature region, other volatile elements such as Cs could be released. Sufficient experimental data, however, have not been obtained yet. It is, therefore, necessary to further clarify the migration behavior of radioactive materials that predominantly depends on temperature in this region.

We surveyed the relationship between the scale of space weather events and their occurrence rate in Japan and we discussed the social impact of these phenomena during the Project for Solar-Terrestrial Environment Prediction (PSTEP). The information was compiled for domestic users of space weather forecasts for appropriate preparedness against space weather disasters. This paper gives a comprehensive summary of the survey, focusing on the fields of electricity, satellite operations, communication and broadcasting, satellite positioning usage, aviation, human space activity, and daily life on the Earth's surface, using the cutting-edge knowledge of space weather. Quantitative estimations of the economic impact of space weather events on electricity and aviation are also given.

The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

Research and development of gradient enhancement of superconducting RF accelerating cavity is carried out by accelerator research institute in the world, but defects on the cavity surface limit accelerating electric field. Therefore, development of "Inside inspection system for superconducting accelerated cavity" that optically visualizes the state of the inner surface of the superconducting cavity has been carried out, and results have been achieved. In this research, we apply image processing technology that has developed remarkably in recent years to the internal inspection system, and advanced the defect recognition method. Extraction of depth information and image synthesis were performed from images obtained with different focal positions with the camera for internal surface inspection. Also, by performing pattern recognition processing on the images, automatic detection of defects has become possible. By integrating these techniques into the cavity inner surface inspection system, it becomes possible to shorten the scan time for defect search and acquire the defect shape.

The proton linac installed in the Ibaraki Neutron Medical Research Center is used for production of the intense neutron flux for the Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT). The linac consists of the 3-MeV RFQ and the 8-MeV DTL. Design average beam current is 10mA. Target is made of Beryllium. First neutron production from the Beryllium target was observed at the end of 2015 with the low intensity beam as a demonstration. After the observation of neutron production, a lot of improvement s was carried out in order to increase the proton beam intensity for the real beam commissioning. The beam commissioning has been started on May 2016. The status of the commissioning is summarized in this report.

Spin nanotubes with the ring exchange interactions

The S=1/2 three-leg spin nanotube with the ring exchange interaction at each plaquette is investigated using the numerical diagonalization of finite-size systems. The previous work suggested that the system without the ring exchange interaction has a spin excitation gap between the singlet ground state and the triplet excitation, because a spontaneous dimerization occurs in the ground state. The present study indicates that as the ring exchange increases, a quantum phase transition occurs at some critical value to another spin gap phase where the pattern of the dimerization is different from the initial one.

The S=1/2 kagome-lattice antiferromagnet is investigated by the numerical diagonalization of 18-spin finite-size cluster. The matrix elements proportional to the intensity of the singlet-triplet ESR transition are calculated in the presence of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. Some angle-dependent selection rules is also proposed.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and post-closure performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, based on some examples of developing method of hydro-geological structure model, acquired knowledge are arranged using the tree diagram, and model uncertainty and its influence on the evaluation items were discussed. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the developed approach for "defining conditions" has been reevaluated and improved from practical viewpoints. In addition, the uncertainty evaluation for the effect of use of cementitious material, as well as glass dissolution model, was conducted with analytical evaluation. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, based on survey of precedent procedures, multiple-approach for distribution coefficient of rocks was established, and the adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to sedimentary rock and granitic rock. Besides, an approach for solubility setting was developed including the procedure of selection of solubility limiting solid phase. The adequacy of the approach was confirmed though its application to key radionuclides.

Following FY2011, JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation stage. With regard to (1) study on rock suitability in terms of hydrology, the tree diagram of methodology of groundwater travel time has been extended for crystalline rock, in addition, tree diagram for sedimentary rock newly has been organized. With regard to (2) study on scenario development, the existing approach has been improved in terms of a practical task, and applied and tested for near field focusing on the buffer. In addition, the uncertainty of some important processes and its impact on safety functions are discussed though analysis. With regard to (3) study on setting radionuclide migration parameters, the approaches for parameter setting have been developed for sorption for rocks and solubility, and applied and tested through parameter setting exercises for key radionuclides.

Liquid lead-bismuth is a candidate material used for innovative nuclear systems such as accelerator driven reactors and fast reactors. Development of corrosion resistant materials in liquid lead-bismuth is one of important research subjects to realize these systems. In this study, improvement of corrosion properties in lead-bismuth by Al alloy coating was investigated. Aluminum alloys were coated on 316SS using sheets made of Al, Ti and Fe powders, and laser heating. Adjustments of chemical composition in sheets and scanning rate of laser beam enabled us to control Al concentration in coating layers. The corrosion tests were conducted at 550$$^{circ}$$C for 1,000 hours or 3,000 hours in oxygen-controlled lead-bismuth. As a result of the corrosion tests, it was found that the coating with Al concentration of 5 to 8 mass% showed good corrosion resistance.

JAEA and NUMO have conducted a collaborative research work which is designed to enhance the methodology of repository design and performance assessment in preliminary investigation phase. The topics and the conducted research are follows; (1) Study on selection of host rock: in terms of hydraulic properties, items for assessing rock property, and assessment methodology of groundwater travel time has been organized with interaction from site investigation. (2) Study on development of scenario: the existing approach has been embodied, in addition, the phenomenological understanding regarding dissolution of and nuclide release from vitrified waste, corrosion of the overpack, long-term performance of the buffer are summarized. (3) Study on setting nuclide migration parameters: the approach for parameter setting has been improved for sorption and diffusion coefficient of buffer/rock, and applied and tested for parameter setting of key radionuclides. (4) Study on ensuring quality of knowledge: framework for ensuring quality of knowledge has been studied and examined aimed at the likely disposal facility condition.

Nuclear systems using lead alloys are one of the promising reactor concepts with improved safety. This paper focuses on development of Al-alloy coating for nuclear systems using liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). It is necessary to improve corrosion resistance of steels because of high corrosiveness of liquid LBE at high temperatures. An Al-alloy coating method using Al, Ti and Fe powders and laser beam heating has been developed. Main defects formed in an Al-powder-alloy coating process are surface defects and cracks. Conditions required to avoid these defects have been studied. According to results of the corrosion tests at 550$$^{circ}$$C in liquid LBE, the Al-alloy coating layers on 316SS prevent severe corrosion attack observed in 316SS without coating. The good corrosion resistance of the Al-alloy coating is based on the thin Al-oxide film regenerated in liquid LBE. It is estimated that the range of the adequate Al concentration in the coating layer is from 4 to 12 wt%.

An Al-alloy coating method using Al, Ti and Fe powders and the laser beam heating has been developed for nuclear systems using liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). The main defects formed in the Al-alloy coating process are surface defects and cracks. Conditions required to avoid such defects have been studied. A static corrosion test was conducted in liquid LBE at the controlled oxygen concentrations of 10$$^{-6}$$ to 10$$^{-3}$$ wt% at 550$$^{circ}$$C for 3000h. The Al-alloy coating layer on 316SS prevents severe corrosion attack such as Ni dissolution, partial loss of grains and LBE penetration observed in the 316SS without Al-alloy coating. The Al-alloy coating layer, which is formed without surface defects and cracks under the optimum condition, exhibits good corrosion resistance in liquid LBE.

A new Al-alloy coating method using Al, Ti and Fe powders has been applied to 316SS in order to develop corrosion resistant coating in lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE). The 316SS plates with coating layers of different Al concentrations were tested at 550$$^{circ}$$C for 1000h in liquid LBE with controlled oxygen concentrations of 10$$^{-6}$$$$sim$$10$$^{-4}$$ mass%. While surface oxidation and grain boundary corrosion accompanied by LBE penetration are observed in 316SS without Al-alloy coating, the Al-alloy coating is effective to protect such severe corrosion attacks in LBE. Although the coating layer containing 2.8 mass% Al does not always keep sufficient corrosion resistance, good corrosion resistance is obtained in the coating layer where the average Al concentration is 4.2 mass%. Cracks are found in the coating layer containing 17.8 mass% Al. The Al-powder-alloy coating applied to 316SS is promising as a corrosion resistant coating method in liquid LBE environment.
