Full-coherent free electron laser seeded by 13th- and 15th-order harmonics of near-infrared femtosecond laser pulses

By introducing 13th- (61.7 nm) and 15th-order harmonics (53.4 nm) of femtosecond laser pulses at 800 nm into an undulator of SCSS (SPring-8 Compact SASE Source) test accelerator at RIKEN, these harmonic pulses were amplified by a factor of more than 10$$^{2}$$ with a high contrast ratio through the interaction between accelerated electron bunches and the harmonic pulses. From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

We have demonstrated free-electron laser radiation seeded by high-order harmonics in the extreme-ultraviolet region. Strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 104 was observed with timing control of an electro-optical sampling technique.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire laser has been significantly amplified with the SCSS test accelerator. The temporal and spatial overlap of the electron beam and the high harmonic radiation were precisely tuned for achieving the seeded free electron laser operation. With numerical simulation the present HH-seeded FEL scheme could readily be applied to the wavelength region down to 10 nm.

JSFR is a concept of a commercial sodium-cooled fast reactor which has been being studied in Fast Reactor Cycle Technology Development (FaCT) project since 2006. For the JSFR fuel handling, various fuel handling systems (FHSs) were investigated and an advanced FHS with an ex-vessel storage tank (EVST) has been selected. The other FHS concepts investigated are evolutional FHSs without an EVST. The result has indicated that the construction cost of the evolutional systems do not reduce the construction cost dramatically, which is mainly due to additional safety measures required higher decay heat handling in gas atmosphere and due to the necessity of separated fresh and failed fuel storage. From an economical point of view, a longer plant outage of the evolutional systems offsets its advantage of the lower construction cost. On the basis of the results of this comparative study, JSFR has selected the FHS with an EVST.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire (Ti:S) laser in the plateau region was injected as a seeding source to a 250-MeV free-electron-laser (FEL) amplifier. When the amplification conditions were fulfilled, strong enhancement of the radiation intensity by a factor of 650 was observed. The random and uncontrollable spikes, which appeared in the spectra of the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) based FEL radiation without the seeding source, were found to be suppressed drastically to form to a narrow-band, single peak profile at 61.2 nm. The properties of the seeded FEL radiation were well reproduced by numerical simulations. We discuss the future precept of the seeded FEL scheme to the shorter wavelength region.

The boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) has been conducted at JRR-4. There is an increased number of cases due to the expansion of application against head and neck cancer and skin cancer. Therefore, the BNCT requires the establishment of procedure to perform more cases in a day. The determination of boron concentration in blood is important to determine the prescribed dose given to a patient. Currently, prompt $$gamma$$ ray analysis (PGA) is applied to the determination of boron concentration. But the PGA is not applied to more than three times BNCT a day. Therefore, swiftness and precision method by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) is studied. Using BSH for Boron standard of the ICP-AES, we enabled to analyze accurately without an intricate sample preparation. The measurement precision of the ICP-AES was within 5% by the correction factor based on the PGA. We established the method of swiftness determination of boron concentration in blood for BNCT.

Refueling operation of sodium fast reactor (SFR) is one of major technical issue due to the chemical activities and opaqueness of sodium coolant properties in comparison with that of LWR. In the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) sodium cooled Fast Reactor (JSFR) design study, the further reliable and rational fuel handling system (FHS) has been developing based on the experience of safe and reliable fuel handling operation in the existent SFR plants. Some of advanced concepts for the FHS have being studied in order to increase economic competitiveness further by attempting reduction of the amount of the material and the refueling time, and are scheduled to execute elemental tests and/or mock-up tests to confirm their feasibilities.

Development of a slim manipulator type fuel handling machine for a commercialized fast reactor

A seismic analysis has been performed showing that the seismic interaction between the UIS and the FHM can be avoided adopting gapless bearings at the FHM arm joint. An angular contact ball bearing is suitable for the new FHM since it can eliminate gaps by preload pressure. A major problem of the FHM bearings is lubrication since the contact pressure between steel rings and ball increases because of ball bearing. Additionally, FHM operating temperature is about 200 deg-C and normal grease is not applicable under argon gas with sodium vapor. A endurance test with 1/10 scale bearings in the air has been performed to show applicability of angular contact ball bearings to the FHM arm joint. The results with 20,000 cycle showed that bearings with combination of MoS$$_{2}$$ coating steel rings and ceramics balls can be tolerable as the FHM operating condition. A real scale bearing test in argon gas with sodium vapor has also been demonstrated to reveal bearing size and sodium vapor effects.

One of the experimental facilities in Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) is the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF), where high-intensity neutron beams and muon beams are used as powerful probes for materials science, life science and related engineering. The neutrons and muons are generated with high-intensity proton beam from 3-GeV rapid cycling synchrotron (RCS). The high-intensity proton beam has to be effectively transported, and a neutron production target and a muon production target have to be also properly irradiated. The principal design of the 3-GeV proton beam transport facility (3NBT) is systematized.

We prospectively investigated the predictability of blood boron concentrations using the data obtained at the first craniotomy after infusion of a low dose of sodium undecahydroclosododecaborate (BSH). Nine patients with malignant glial tumors underwent Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) between 1995 and 2001. In 7 patients, 1g of BSH was infused before the first tumor removal and boron concentrations were determined using prompt gamma ray analysis (PGA). Then, 12 hours before BNCT, patients were infused at a dose of 100mg/kg BSH, and the boron concentrations were determined again. The boron biodistribution data showed a biexponential pharmacokinetic profile. If the final boron concentration at 6 or 9 hours after the end of the infusion is within the 95% confidence interval of the prediction, direct prediction from biexponential fit will reduce the error of blood boron concentrations during irradiation to around 6%.

Using the Rapid Prototyping Technique, we produced a realistic phantom as a formative model of a patient head. This realistic phantom will contribute to verification of our planning system. However, cross-correlation among the calculations using the JAERI Computational Dosimetry System (JCDS), the realistic phantom, and the in vivo measurements were not fully completed because of the difficulty involved in modeling a post-surgical brain and a thermal neutron shield. The experimental simulation technique using the realistic phantom is a useful tool for more reliable dose planning for the intraoperative BNCT.

A thermal-epithermal mixed beam "Thermal Neutron Beam Mode I" was used in the eleven sessions of boron neutron capture therapy which have been performed at JRR-4 from 1998. We are planning to use an epithermal beam for the treatment of deeper tumors in the next trial of the intraoperative BNCT. In this study, "Epi-12" which was made by putting up a cadmium shutter of "Thermal Neutron Beam Mode I" was investigated for the clinical benefits and safety by epithermal beams. Decrease of fast neutron contamination ratio in Epi-12 mode is the advantage for BNCT, particular in the intraoperative BNCT. Because fast neutron on the brain surface is one of the critical factors in the intraoperative BNCT in which the plain beam directly interacts the normal structures. Furthermore a mixture of mode Epi-12 and Th-12 will provide various dose distribution designs. It may be used as a new method to control the best distribution for individual tumors.
