Developments in the fabrication technology of low density MOX pellets for fast breeder reactor fuel

Asakura, Koichi; Yamaguchi, Toshihiro; Otani, Tetsuo

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 357(1-3), p.126 - 137, 2006/10

 Times Cited Count:9 Percentile:53.51(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)

The fabrication of low density MOX pellets was studied using some organic compounds as pore formers. The pore former, K3 showed the best performance among five organic compounds in the 7.5 kg-UOX runs, but K3 lost this in 36 kg-MOX run, possibly because plutonium decay heat affected its performance. Comparison of thermal stubilities between K3 and a newly introduced pore former, Avicel, of high softening temperature, showed that K3 lost its spherical particle shape and consequently, its pore forming ability at 70$$^{circ}$$C which was below its reported melting point (84-88$$^{circ}$$C) while Avicel could maintain its spherical particle shape up to 150$$^{circ}$$C. The pore forming performance of Avicel was also comfirmed in the 36 kg-MOX run which is the same scale as for mass production of MOX fuel pellets.

Higuchi, Kenji; Imamura, Toshiyuki*; Suzuki, Yoshio; Shimizu, Futoshi; Machida, Masahiko; Otani, Takayuki; Hasegawa, Yukihiro*; Yamagishi, Nobuhiro*; Kimura, Kazuyuki*; Aoyagi, Tetsuo; et al.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science 2858, p.245 - 257, 2003/00

Prototype of the middleware for Grid project promoted by national institutes in Japan has been developed. Key technologies that are indispensable for construction of virtual organization were already implemented onto the prototype of middleware and examined in practical computer/network system from a view point of availability. In addition several kinds of scientific applications are being executed on the prototype system. It seems that successful result in the implementation of those technologies such as security infrastructure, component programming and collaborative visualization in practical computer/network systems means significant progress in Science Grid in Japan.

Proceedings of International Conference on Supercomputing in Nuclear Applications (SNA 2003) (CD-ROM), 11 Pages, 2003/00

An experimental application of Grid computing was executed in ITBL project promoted by six member institutes of MEXT. Key technologies that are indispensable for construction of virtual organization were implemented onto ITBL Middleware and examined in the experiment from a view point of availability. It seems that successful result in the implementation and examination of those technologies such as security infrastructure, component programming and collaborative visualization in practical computer/network systems means significant progress in Science Grid in Japan.

Nuclear material measurement is an important measure to determine the amount of nuclear material of each stage such as receipt, shipment, inventory and hold-up. The material accountancy based on the material balance among the measurements is a measure to control of nuclear material. The material accountancy, from its technical aspect, can be used as promising measures for purposes from operator's level to state's level such as the nuclear safety, property control and environmental preservation other than safeguards measures only to conclude no diversion of nuclear material. This paper discusses various purposes of nuclear material measurements and clarifies the certain function to be expected at each purpose. Based on the discussion, critical points for the quality assurance of each stage are studied.

An outline of the intake event at the Los Alamos National Laboratory

Otani, Tetsuo; Kato, Masato; Kitamura, Akihiro;

JNC TN8420 2001-001, 49 Pages, 2001/02

JNC-TN8420-2001-001.pdf:3.05MB

On March, 2000, plutonium-238 intake event occurred at the Los Alamos National Laboratory(LANL), USA. The Accident Investigation Board performed the accident investigations in accordance with Department of Energy (DOE) and released the report of the accident on July, 2000. The accident occurred while LANL worker was checking the equipment of glovebox in the Plutonium Processing and Handling Facility of LANL. The lifetime effective dose to the most affected worker was estimated to be as high as 3Sv, and corresponding dose to three other workers probably exceeded their annual exposure level. Since we have many gloveboxes similar to the ones in LANL, and we must improve worker's safety consciousness against glovebox-operation in the future, we have studied this report and compiled as a safety lecture note for the JNC employee. And we compiled to introduce this accident outline to domestic nuclear enterprises and institutes.
