We have developed a new setup to measure prompt fission $$gamma$$-ray spectra in neutron induced fission up to energies sufficient to reveal the structure associated with giant dipole resonances of fission fragments. The setup consists of multi-wire proportional counters, to detect both fission fragments in coincidence, and two large volume (101.6 mm in diameter and 127.0 mm in length) LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) scintillators, to measure the $$gamma$$-rays. The setup was used to obtain the prompt fission $$gamma$$-ray spectrum for thermal neutron induced fission of $$^{235}$$U at the PF1B cold-neutron beam facility of the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France. We have successfully measured the $$gamma$$-ray spectrum up to energies of about 20 MeV, what extends the currently known $$gamma$$-ray spectrum limit to higher energies by approximately a factor of two.

Fission-fragment mass distributions were measured for $$^{237-240}$$U, $$^{239-242}$$Np and $$^{241-244}$$Pu populated in the excitation-energy range from 10 to 60 MeV by multi-nucleon transfer channels in the reaction $$^{18}$$O + $$^{238}$$U at the JAEA tandem facility. Among them, the data for $$^{240}$$U and $$^{240,241,242}$$Np were observed for the first time. It was found that the mass distributions for all the studied nuclides maintain a double-humped shape up to the highest measured energy in contrast to expectations of predominantly symmetric fission due to the washing out of nuclear shell effects. From a comparison with the dynamical calculation based on the fluctuation-dissipation model, this behavior of the mass distributions was unambiguously attributed to the effect of multi-chance fission.

The project of the comprehensive nuclear data research for the development of the advanced reactor systems had been executed successfully by eight organizations from 2005 to 2009. In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

The Coulomb barrier distribution between heavy nuclei is important quantity to investigate the effect of quantum couplings of nuclear vibration and nucleon transfer to nucleus-nucleus interaction. We obtained the barrier distributions of lead-based fusion reactions of $$^{48}$$Ti, $$^{54}$$Cr, $$^{56}$$Fe, $$^{64}$$Ni, $$^{70}$$Zn, $$^{76}$$Ge, and $$^{86}$$Kr projectiles on $$^{208}$$Pb by means of the measurements of the quasi-elastic cross sections at backward scattering angles. The obtained positions and widths of the barrier distributions are compared with a calculation taking account of the channel couplings. The effect of the nuclear deformation on reaction process was also investigated by means of the measurements of product mass distributions for the systems of $$^{30}$$Si, $$^{36}$$S, $$^{40}$$Ar projectiles on $$^{238}$$U. We found that the collision at polar side gives rise to quasi-fission, where an asymmetric fission is dominant.
