Hydrostaticity in the sample chamber estimated from the MgO 220 peak width improves in the order of Pb, AgCl, Ar, ME mixture, N, and the heated ME mixture. Unlike previous results using a diamond anvil cell, the unheated ME mixture is superior to Ar even after freezing, probably due to the cup on the anvil face. Considering these results and the sizable coherent scattering of Ne, which would show good hydrostaticity, we conclude that the ME mixture (preferably the heated one) is the best PTM in neutron experiments up to 20 GPa, while Ar can be substituted when a sample is reactive to alcohols.

By the nuclear disaster of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and the following tsunami on March 11, 2011, a large amount of radioactive material was released from the NPS. After the nuclear disaster, airborne radiation monitoring using manned helicopter was conducted around FDNPS. We have carried out the background monitoring around the nuclear power stations of the whole country to apply the airborne radiation monitoring technique that has been cultivated in Fukushima against nuclear emergency response. The results of monitoring around Tomari, Kashiwazaki-Kariwa and Genkai Nuclear Power Station in the fiscal 2017 were summarized in this report. In addition, technical issues were described.

Sample environment (SE) team at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC has worked on development and operation of SE equipment and devices. All the members belong to one sub-team at least, such as Cryogenic and magnet, High temperature, High pressure, Soft matter and special environment including Pulse magnet, Hydrogen environment, Light irradiation and He spin filter. Cryostats, a magnet, furnaces, a VX-6-type Paris-Edinburgh press and a prototype of a Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) based He spin filter for polarized neutron beam experiments are in operation. Furthermore, a prototype of compact power supply for a pulsed magnet system is currently developed. In the J-PARC Research Building, several pieces of equipment for softmatter research such as a rheometer and a gas and vapor adsorption measurement instrument have been prepared.

PLANET is a high-pressure neutron beamline constructed at pulsed-neutron source in Materials and Life Science Facility (MLF) in J-PARC. The six-axis multi-anvil press designed for time of flight (TOF) neutron diffraction experiments enables routine data collection at high pressures and high temperatures up to 10 GPa and 2000 K, respectively. To obtain clean data, the beamline is equipped with the incident slits and receiving collimators that eliminate parasitic scattering from the high-pressure cell. The high performance of the diffractometer for the resolution ( 0.6%) and the accessible d-spacing range (0.2 - 8.4 ) together with low-parasitic scattering characteristics enables precise structure determination of crystals and liquids under high pressure and temperature conditions.

The radiation leak accident happened in the hadron experimental hall of J-PARC on May 23, 2013. The accident was caused by a target sublimation due to an unanticipated beam from the 50 GeV main ring (MR). To detect and prevent the radiation leakage in all facilities of J-PARC, we improve the machine protection system (MPS). In the J-PARC 3GeV synchrotron (Rapid Cycling Synchrotron, RCS), a monitoring system of an abnormal state of the extraction beam to the mercury target of material life science experiment facility (MLF) were prepared. The radiation level of the gas in the tunnel were able to always observed by connecting radiation safety system and accelerator control system. The dump temperature was included in the MPS. We also developed new interlock system that can stop the beam immediately when the beam current exceed the limit.

From numerical simulations of the amplification processes of high-order harmonic pulses in the undulator, optimum conditions of the electron bunch duration interacting with the high-order harmonic pulses were investigated for generating full-coherent and intense pulses in the extreme ultraviolet wavelength region.

We have reviewed information about justification for establishing uranium bearing waste acceptance for near surface disposal (trench and concrete pit disposals) in foreign countries, to intend to discuss clearance level and disposal of uranium bearing waste in Japan. Most of EU countries have adopted the unconditional clearance level 1 Bq/g described in EU Guidance RP 122 Part 1 and IAEA Safety Guide RS-G-1.7 for uranium wastes. And in the case of special landfill burial, the conditional clearance level about 10 Bq/g (equivalent to exemption level) has been adopted in Germany, Sweden and UK.

The 13th harmonic of a Ti:sapphire laser has been significantly amplified with the SCSS test accelerator. The temporal and spatial overlap of the electron beam and the high harmonic radiation were precisely tuned for achieving the seeded free electron laser operation. With numerical simulation the present HH-seeded FEL scheme could readily be applied to the wavelength region down to 10 nm.

JAEA has developed a TMS which can monitor the movement of nuclear material convoys to make safe and proper transport of nuclear materials. The TMS mainly consists of the location information monitoring system to monitor the location of the convoys and the visual information monitoring system to survey around the convoys. The TMS can send information in real-time to the TCC located at the shipper site. The JAEA has operated the TMS for ground transportation of MOX fuels since 2005, and the JAEA solved visual control problems that were observed during the operational experience and upgraded the system by adding the automatic communication control system, etc. In the case of emergency during transport, the TMS can send much more detailed visual information of the accident site to the TCC, which is useful for planning and executing an effective response. This paper reports the overview of the upgraded TMS and its effectiveness.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has developed a transport monitoring system (TMS), which tracks the movement of nuclear material convoys in real time, and which is consistent with the physical protection requirements for transport of Category 1 nuclear materials. The TMS has been used for land transport of MOX fuels since 2005. JAEA solved some problems that were observed during operational experience and upgraded the system by adding the following features. In the case of emergency during transport, the upgraded TMS can send much more detailed visual information of the accident site to the TCC, which is useful for planning and executing an effective response. This paper presents the features of the TMS and the results obtained from operational experiences.
