JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 33, p.011073_1 - 011073_7, 2021/03

Neutron resonance absorption imaging was adapted to observe the Eu band adsorbed in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column for minor actinide recovery by extraction chromatography. Several wet columns were prepared by either light water or heavy water and compared with the dry column to evaluate the neutron transmission. The neutron transmission spectra showed that 45% was transmitted through the dry column while 20% and 40% were transmitted through the wet columns of light water and heavy water, respectively. The results indicated that heavy water is more applicable than light water to observe the Eu adsorption band in the CMPO/SiO$$_{2}$$-P column.

In the decommissioning of the Fukushima-Daiichi (1F) Nuclear Power Plant, it is essential to understand characteristics of the melted core materials. The estimation of boride in the real debris is of great importance to develop safe debris removal plans. Hence, it is required to investigate the amount of boron in the melted core materials with nondestructive methods. Prompt gamma-ray activation analysis (PGAA) is one of the useful techniques to determine the amount of borides by means of the 478 keV prompt gamma-ray from neutron absorption reaction of boron. Moreover, it is well known that the width of the 478 keV gamma-ray peak is typically broadened due to the Doppler effect. The degree of the broadening is affected by coexisting materials, and can be recognized by the width of the prompt gamma-ray peak. As a feasibility study, the prompt gamma-ray from boride samples were measured using the ANNRI, NOBORU, and RADEN beamlines at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of Japan Proton Accelerator Complex (J-PARC).

Materials Research Proceedings, Vol.15, p.160 - 164, 2020/02

Lead Bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a promising candidate of the coolant for accelerator driven system (ADS) and fast breeder reactor. Neutron transmission imaging is a powerful technique to investigate the LBE in flow channel. However, previous studies have focused on the analysis of the neutron transmission spectra due to Bragg diffraction (Bragg edge transmission) from the solid phase of the LBE. If the neutron transmission spectra due to the diffraction from a liquid phase can be observed, it is useful to study the behavior of the molten LBE in the flow channel. Therefore, the energy-resolved neutron transmission imaging measurements of the molten LBE was carried out. The observed neutron transmission spectra can be explained by those calculated from the scattering profiles of the molten LBE. This indicates that the structure of the molten LBE can be characterized and mapped using the neutron transmission imaging.

For the effective phase imaging at pulsed neutron sources, we have designed and developed the multi-colored Talbot-Lau interferometer which works at several wavelengths. At the Energy Resolved Neutron Imaging System RADEN in J-PARC, we demonstrated its operation by observing the visibilities of moire fringes derived from different wavelengths (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 nm). We also investigated the variation of moire fringes dependent on the wavelength resolution from 18% to 50% and showed the advantage of pulsed beams. At the central wavelength of 0.5 nm, we have succeeded in interferometric imaging for the samples of metal rods made of aluminum, lead, and copper. An absorption grating as an analyzer was fabricated by imprinting of metallic glass for the first time, and showed a clear moire fringe with the high visibility of 68% and a well-controlled shape in comparison with previous ones fabricated by oblique evaporation of gadolinium.

Time of flight Bragg edge transmission (BET) imaging was adopted to the plastically bent plates of a ferritic steel and a duplex stainless steel, and the obtained results were validated using neutron diffraction method and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) observations. The BET imaging results of texture distribution and phase volume fractions showed good agreements with those obtained by neutron diffraction and EBSD. The crystallite size evaluation using extinction correction was succeeded by the RITS code where Sabine's primary extinction function was applied, however, the crystallite size was not obtained by the Rietveld refinement where the same function was used for the evaluation. In this study, we comparatively reinvestigate the crystallite size and the dislocation density of the plastically bent steel plates by the use of Pawley analysis on the diffraction data and grain analysis on EBSD data.

Inner observation of canning Cadmium by energy-selective neutron imaging at NOBORU

Harada, Masahide; Parker, J. D.*; Oikawa, Kenichi; Kai, Tetsuya; Shinohara, Takenao

JPS Conference Proceedings (Internet), 8, p.035002_1 - 035002_5, 2015/09

We found that Cadmium (Cd) was not only a suitable thermal neutron absorber as a poison material in a pulsed spallation neutron source, but also had a long life time with a small sacrifice in neutron intensities at an intense source. Therefore, we decided to use Cd as the poison material in the first moderator in JSNS/J-PARC. In the development stage of JSNS, canning of a Cd plate by an Al-alloy with the Cold Isostatic Pressing method failed and the Al-alloy cover of the Cd plate was broken. In order to correct the manufacturing process, we have to observe the inside of the sample to find the reason for failure. To investigation the inside of the canning Cd plate non-destructively, we applied the energy selective neutron imaging method. We measured the transmission of the canning Cd plate used by the micro-pixel chamber ($$mu$$PIC) neutron detector at NOBORU (BL10) in JSNS. As a result, several vacancies could be found and the distribution of the amount of Cd could be also obtained.
