Much is still not known about the end-state of core materials in each of the units at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (Daiichi) that were operating on March 11, 2011. The Nuclear Energy Agency of the Organization for Economic Development has launched the Preparatory Study on Analysis of Fuel Debris (PreADES) project as a first step to reduce some of these uncertainties. As part of the PreADES Task 1, relevant information was reviewed to confirm the accuracy of graphical depictions of the debris endstates at the damaged Daiichi units, which provides a basis for suggesting future debris examinations. Two activities have been completed within the PreADES Task 1. First, relevant knowledge from severe accidents at the Three Mile Island Unit 2 and the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Unit 4 was reviewed, along with results from prototypic tests and hot cell examinations, to glean insights that may inform future decommissioning activities at Daiichi. Second, the current debris endstate diagrams for the damaged reactors at Daiichi were reviewed to confirm that they incorporate relevant knowledge from plant observations and from severe accident code analyses of the BSAF (Benchmark Study of the Accident at Daiichi Nuclear Power Station) 1 and 2 projects. This paper highlights Task 1 insights, which have the potential to not only inform future Decontamination and Decommissioning activities at Daiichi, but also provide important perspectives for severe accident analyses and management, particularly regarding the long term management of a damaged nuclear site following a severe accident.

Seaborgium isotopes were produced in the fusion reaction $$^{30}$$Si + $$^{238}$$U as evaporation residues (ERs), and the cross sections were determined. The experiment was carried out at GSI in Darmstadt, Germany. At the center-of-mass energy of E$$_{c.m.}$$= 144 MeV, three $$alpha$$ decay chains starting from $$^{263}$$Sg were observed, and the corresponding ER cross section was determined to be 67 pb. At the sub-barrier energy of E$$_{c.m.}$$= 133 MeV, three spontaneous fission events of a new isotope $$^{264}$$Sg were detected. The cross section was 10 pb. The half-life of $$^{264}$$Sg was determined to be 120 ms. The ER cross sections were compared with a statistical model calculation. In the fusion process, the coupled channel calculation taking into account the prolate deformation of $$^{238}$$U was adopted to determine the capture cross section. The calculated capture cross section agrees well with the fission cross section of $$^{30}$$Si + $$^{238}$$U obtained at the JAEA tandem accelerator. The measured cross section of $$^{264}$$Sg at the sub-barrier energy is factor 10$$^{4}$$ larger than the calculation based on the one-dimensional model in the fusion process, showing the fusion enhancement caused by the deformation of $$^{238}$$U. However, disagreement with the calculation suggests the presence of quasi-fission channel. At the above barrier energy of E$$_{c.m.}$$ = 144 MeV, the measured cross section is well reproduced by the calculation. This means that the interaction of $$^{30}$$Si at the equotorial side of $$^{238}$$U has advantage on the fusion process.

Decay properties of $$^{255}$$Rf, $$^{251}$$No and $$^{247}$$Fm were investigated by measuring the $$alpha$$ and $$gamma$$ decays. The experiment was carried out by using the linear accelerator UNILAC and velocity filter SHIP at GSI. The evaporation residues were separated by the SHIP and implanted into a silicon detector located at the focal plane. The $$alpha$$ decays were detected by the silicon detector itself and the $$gamma$$ rays were detected by Ge detectors. These isotopes were produced by the reaction $$^{207}$$Pb($$^{50}$$Ti, 2n)$$^{255}$$Rf and the $$alpha$$ decay daughters from $$^{255}$$Rf, or by the reaction $$^{206}$$Pb($$^{48}$$Ca, 3n)$$^{251}$$No and the $$alpha$$ decay daughter of $$^{251}$$No. It was found that (1) the 1.0 s isomeric state in $$^{251}$$No is located in the level of 106 keV. (2) The new isomeric state with 2 $$mu$$s was found in $$^{251}$$No, which was directly populated in the reaction $$^{206}$$Pb($$^{48}$$Ca,3n)$$^{251}$$No. The state is located at the level larger than 1700 keV and decays by accompanying two $$gamma$$ rays. These two $$gamma$$-ray energies agreed with the lines which was followed by the $$alpha$$ decay of $$^{255}$$Rf.
