MIRS is built at LESIA-Paris Observatory in collaboration with four other French laboratories, collaboration and financial support of CNES and close collaboration with JAXA and MELCO. The instrument is designed to fully accomplish MMX's scientific and measurement objectives. MIRS will remotely provide near-infrared spectral maps of Phobos and Deimos containing compositional diagnostic spectral features that will be used to analyze the surface composition and to support the sampling site selection. MIRS will also study Mars atmosphere, in particular to spatial and temporal changes such as clouds, dust and water vapor.

The experimental data agree well with ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. An accurate theoretical description of the phonon spectrum is obtained only when a local Coulomb repulsion 3 eV among 5f electrons is taken into account. This implies partial localization of the 5f electrons in this compound. A comparison made with the phonon spectrum of UCoGa suggests that the latter compound is better described with a fully itinerant f electrons model.

The observed excitation clearly softens at a wave vector Q=(1,0,0), which is the same as the modulation vector of the field-induced antiferro-quadrupolar ordering, and its intensity at Q=(1,0,0) is smaller than that around the zone center. This result directly evidences that this excitonic behavior is derived mainly from nonmagnetic quadrupolar interactions. Furthermore, the narrowing of the linewidths of the excitations below the superconducting transition temperature indicates the close connection between the superconductivity and the excitons.

The crystal field excitation first evidenced at 0.7 meV on powder samples is found to have a minimum of energy at the zone boundary corresponding to the wavevector of antiferro-quadrupolar instability. The evolution of the magnetic excitation spectrum under magnetic field confirms the singlet ground state.
