We have carried out inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering experiments on single-grain samples of the Zn-Mg-Sc icosahedral quasicrystal and of the Zn-Sc periodic cubic 1/1 approximant, with the aim of studying the respective influence of the local order and the long-range order (periodic or quasiperiodic) on lattice dynamics. Besides the overall similarities and the existence of a pseudo-gap in the transverse dispersion relation, marked difference are observed, the pseudo-gap being larger and better defined in the approximant than in the quasicrystal. These results are compared with simulations on atomic models and using oscillating pair potentials, and the simulations reproduce in detail the experimental results.

It is now well known that CRYOPAD (CRYOgenic Polarization Analysis Device) is a powerful device which enables us to investigate the spherical changes of neutron-spin polarization in the scattering processes of magnetic materials. ILL and CEA-Grenoble, in the framework of EC/ENPI, and JAERI, in the framework of the MoU between ILL and ASRC JAERI, initiated to assemble three third generation CRYOPADs at ILL (CRYOPADUM project), optimized both for elastic and inelastic neutron scattering. One is installed on the ILL instrument D3 (Millennium Project) and the other on the CEA-Grenoble instrument IN22. The JAERI CRYOPADUM is installed on the triple-axis spectrometer TAS-1 at JRR-3 and is now in commissioning with powerful data acquisition software implanted from D3. We present the status of the CRYOPADUM on TAS-1 at JAERI and describe some of the planned experiments.

The status of the polarized neutron options on TAS-1 is reported. TAS-1 is a thermal neutron triple-axis spectrometer installed at JRR-3 of JAEA and has been operational since 1991. Following the recent advances in the polarization analysis technique an upgrading program of polarized neutron options for TAS-1 was started five years ago. In this program new doubly-focusing-polarizing Heusler monochromator and analyzer were introduced to TAS-1. In addition, one of three third-generation CRYOPAD(CRYOgenic Polarization Analysis Device)s which were assembled for ILL(D3), CEA-Grenoble(IN22) and JAEA was installed on TAS-1 to enable the spherical polarization analysis. Using the increased polarized neutron flux elastic and inelastic polarized neutron scattering experiments with the conventional setup for the one-dimensional polarization analysis and with CRYOPAD for the three-dimensional polarization analysis are now routinely performed on TAS-1.

Polarized neutron scattering investigation of non-collinear magnetic ground state

Recent active investigations of spin-frustrated and multiferroic systems suggest that the appearance of non-collinear magnetic ground states is strongly correlated with their interesting novel physical properties. The detailed information on spin moment direction or its temperature dependence of complicated non-collinear magnetic structure, can be very effectively obtained by means of polarized neutron technique. JAEA, in collaboration with ILL and CENG, has been installing the 3-dimensional polarization analysis equipment, CRYOPAD, on TAS-1 at JRR-3. We report some recent results on non-collinear magnetic ground states in the multiferroic system ErMn$$_{2}$$O$$_{5}$$ and the itinerant antiferromagnetic system CrB$$_{2}$$.
