The IAEA coordinated research project on "Radioactive Release from the Prototype Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor under Severe Accident Conditions" was devoted to realistic numerical simulation of fission products and fuel particles inventory inside the reference sodium cooled fast reactor volumes under severe accident conditions at different time scales. The scope of analysis was divided into three parts, defined as three work packages (WPs): (1) in-vessel source term estimation; (2) primary system/containment system interface source term estimation; and, (3) in-containment phenomenology analysis. Comparison of the results obtained in WP-1 indicates that the release fractions of noble gases and cesium radionuclides, and fractions of radionuclides released to the cover gas are in a good agreement. In the analysis using a common pressure history in WP-2, the results were in good agreement indicating that the accuracy of the analysis method of each institution is almost the same. The standalone case, which uses a set of pre-defined release fractions, was defined for WP-3 which enables to decouple this part of analysis from previous WPs. There is broad consensus among the predicted results by all the participants in WP-3.

In high-performance thermoelectric materials, there are two main low thermal conductivity mechanisms: the phonon anharmonic and phonon scattering resulting from the dynamic disorder, which have been successfully revealed by inelastic neutron scattering. Using neutron scattering and ab initio calculations, we report here a mechanism of static local structure distortion combined with phonon-anharmonic-induced ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in $$alpha$$-MgAgSb. Since the transverse acoustic phonons are almost fully scattered by the intrinsic distorted rocksalt sublattice in this compound, the heat is mainly transported by the longitudinal acoustic phonons. The ultralow thermal conductivity in $$alpha$$-MgAgSb is attributed to its atomic dynamics being altered by the structure distortion, which presents a possible microscopic route to enhance the performance of similar thermoelectric materials.

We report on the fabrication of reshaped Ag nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a Nd:YAG crystal by combining Ag ion implantation and swift heavy Xe ion irradiation. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect is proved to be efficiently modulated according to the phenomenon of polarization-dependent absorption. The LSPR peak located at 448 nm shows red shift and blue shift at 0 degree and 90 degree polarization, respectively, which is in good agreement with calculation by discrete dipole approximation. Based on the near-field intensity distribution, the interaction between reshaped NPs shows a non-ignorable effect on the optical absorption. Furthermore, the polarization-dependence of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is analyzed, which is positively related to the modulated LSPR absorption. It demonstrates the potential of the enhancement of PL intensity by embedded plasmonic Ag NPs.

The first prompt in-beam $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy of a superheavy element, $$^{256}$$Rf, has been performed successfully. A development of an intense isotopically enriched $$^{50}$$Ti beam using the MIVOC method enabled us to perform this experiment. A rotational band up to a spin of 20 $$hbar$$ has been discovered in $$^{256}$$Rf, and its moment of inertia has been extracted. These data suggest that there is no evidence of a significant deformed shell gap at $$Z$$ = 104.

Post-irradiation SEM study of ZrC-based TRISO coatings from the PYCASSO experiments

Hania, R.*; M$'e$nard, G.*; Aihara, Jun; Ueta, Shohei; Knol, S.*; De Jong, A.*; Van den Berg, F.*; Van Staveren, T.*; De Groot, S.*

Proceedings of 6th International Topical Meeting on High Temperature Reactor Technology (HTR 2012) (USB Flash Drive), 5 Pages, 2012/10

The PYCASSO irradiation experiments have been conducted to determine the effect of irradiation at high temperature on the properties of various coating materials of the coated fuel particle. One part of PYCASSO is to evaluate the advanced barrier material ZrC. Pyrocarbon (PyC) / ZrC-coated ZrO$$_{2}$$ and Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ particles fabricated by JAEA were irradiated by HFR at 900 $$^{circ}$$C and 1,100 $$^{circ}$$C, at the same flux level up to approximately 2 dpa. Samples of irradiated and unirradiated particles are under investigation using an electron microscope, with the aim to identify irradiation effects and the influence of the heat treatment after the fabrication on the ZrC microstructure. Preliminary results of this SEM study indicate that whereas the heat treatment at 1,800 $$^{circ}$$C prior to irradiation induces significant grain growth near the ZrC edges, embrittling the ZrC layer and weakening the iPyC-ZrC interface, irradiation has no noticeable effect on microstructure and coating strength.

Rotational band structure of the $$Z$$=104 nucleus $$^{256}$$Rf has been observed for the first time using an in-beam $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopic technique. This nucleus is the heaviest among the nuclei whose rotational band structure has ever been observed. Thus, the present result provides valuable information on the single-particle shell structure and pairing interaction in the heaviest extreme of nuclei. The deduced moment of inertia indicates that there is no deformed shell gap at $$Z$$=104, which is predicted in a number of current self-consistent mean-field models.
