Level structures of $$^{56,58}$$Ca cast doubt on a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca

Gamma decays were observed in $$^{56}$$Ca and $$^{58}$$Ca following quasi-free one-proton knockout reactions from $$^{57,59}$$Sc. For $$^{56}$$Ca, a $$gamma$$ ray transition was measured to be 1456(12) keV, while for $$^{58}$$Ca an indication for a transition was observed at 1115(34) keV. Both transitions were tentatively assigned as the $$2^{+}_{1} rightarrow 0^{+}_{gs}$$ decays. A shell-model calculation in a wide model space with a marginally modified effective nucleon-nucleon interaction depicts excellent agreement with experiment for $$2^{+}_{1}$$ level energies, two-neutron separation energies, and reaction cross sections, corroborating the formation of a new nuclear shell above the N = 34 shell. Its constituents, the $$0_{f5/2}$$ and $$0_{g9/2}$$ orbitals, are almost degenerate. This degeneracy precludes the possibility for a doubly magic $$^{60}$$Ca and potentially drives the dripline of Ca isotopes to $$^{70}$$Ca or even beyond.

Plant system study of France-Japan common concept on Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor

Kato, Atsushi; Yamamoto, Tomohiko; Ando, Masato; Chikazawa, Yoshitaka; Murakami, Hisatomo*; Oyama, Kazuhiro*; Kaneko, Fumiaki*; Higurashi, Koichi*; Chanteclair, F.*; Chenaud, M.-S.*; et al.

This paper provides an overview of plant system studies to establish a common technical view for Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor concept between France and Japan based on ASTRID600 and the new concept with downsized output called ASTRID150. One of important issues on a reactor structure design is to enhance seismic resistance to be tolerable against strong earthquake such that postulated in Japan. A concept of High Frequency Design is shared, and the design options related to HFD have been examined and design recommendations are established. In addition, this paper include results of studies for a steam generator, a decay heat removal system, a fuel handling system and a containment vessel.

Rodriguez, D.; Rossi, F.; Takamine, Jun; Koizumi, Mitsuo; Seya, Michio; Crochemore, J. M.*; Varasano, G.*; Bogucarska, T.*; Abbas, K.*; Pedersen, B.*

Proceedings of INMM 58th Annual Meeting (Internet), 6 Pages, 2017/07

The JAEA is collaborating with the EC-JRC to develop a NDA system combining four active techniques to improve safeguards verification. Delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy can determine nuclide ratios by correlating observed fission products' time-dependent, high-energy, $$gamma$$ rays to the sample's complex fission yield. To quantify fissile nuclides of significant interest, the fast neutrons from compact, transportable sources must be thermalized to where the fissile nuclides have large cross-sections while maintaining high fluxes to provide significant signals. Experiments are underway at some facilities to improve DGS, including the PUNITA system at JRC-Ispra. These neutron fluxes and measurement conditions are used to develop a Monte Carlo that will be used to analyze the DGS data by an inverse-MC method. The DGS program described here summarizes the 3-year development to optimize the moderator, perform experiments, and create the IMC in preparation for a demonstration of the technique.

Delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy, 2; Experimental studies for determination of fissile materials ratios

Rossi, F.; Koizumi, Mitsuo; Rodriguez, D.; Takamine, Jun; Seya, Michio; Pedersen, B.*; Crochemore, J. M.*; Abbas, K.*; Bogucarska, T.*; Varasano, G.*

Proceedings of INMM 58th Annual Meeting (Internet), 7 Pages, 2017/07

In the field of nuclear safeguards, new and improved active-interrogation NDA technologies are needed for the independent verification of the fissile composition in HRNM. JAEA and the JRC are now collaborating to develop DGS to determine ratios of fissile nuclides present in the sample measuring the decay gamma rays from FP. Measurements of LRNM samples are underway using different facilities. To minimize the interference from the LLFP, it is important to use shielding and to consider those gamma rays above 3-MeV. Different compact neutron sources are available, but all of them need to be slowed down to the thermal energy region. We are optimizing moderator and reflector materials using MCNP. Optimization of the irradiation, transfer and measurement sequence is now underway. The experiments we are conducting using certified mono-elemental U/Pu samples allow us to associate observed DG to the proportional isotopic compositions. In this paper we will present the current status of the optimization process and the experimental campaign for the determination of the ratio of fissile materials of U and Pu in a sample.

CEA and JAEA intend to develop prototype or demonstration (proto/demo) of sodium-cooled fast reactors within these two decades. Common final goals of their respective programs are SFR commercialization. The target of commercialized SFR for both parties is basically consistent with the Generation IV goals. Due to industrial backgrounds and feedback of past/existing reactor experiences, ASTRID and JSFR have selected pool and loop configurations respectively. CEA and JAEA have cross-analyzed both pool and loop concepts (ASTRID and demonstration JSFR). The analysis results showed that both concepts are technologically feasible and meet design goals. From the view point of collaboration, the present analysis has identified a wide range of collaborative items, in several fields: design principles (ex. design target, design standard), development on components and systems, development on parts of components, devices, or sub-systems, design methods, simulation tools, etc.

We have performed zero-field muon spin rotation measurements on single crystals of La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$ to search for spontaneous currents in the pseudo-gap state. By comparing measurements on materials across the phase diagram, we put strict upper limits on any possible time-reversal symmetry breaking fields that could be associated with the pseudo-gap. Comparison between experimental limits and proposed circulating current states effectively eliminates the possibility that such states exist in this family of materials.

In the huge volume of research on the cuprates, there is very little that investigates the properties of the highly overdoped area of the phase diagram, where superconductivity disappears with increased carrier concentration. In the spirit of further exploring this region, we have performed the first known $$mu$$SR measurements of heavily overdoped single-crystalline La$$_{2-x}$$Sr$$_{x}$$CuO$$_{4}$$. We discovered an anomalous field-induced broadening of the internal magnetic field distribution. The broadening is linear in applied field and has a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence. Furthermore, the effect increases with doping above $$x=0.12$$ and is maximal at our highest doping ($$x=0.3$$). Possible relaxation mechanisms are discussed.
