Especially when one of the players contains a plural number of 4f electrons, the orbital degrees of freedom play a major role as a new type of nonmagnetic and/or weak-magnetic phenomena. Several examples found in Pr- and Sm-based filled skutterudites are introduced in relation to muon spin relaxation experiments.

It reveals strong spin fluctuation below the MI transition, suggesting a predominant role of geometrical spin frustration. Meanwhile, an incommensurate spin density wave discontinuously develops at lower temperature. These observations strongly suggest the occurrence of an anomalous magnetic transition and associated change in the local spin dynamics in undistorted pyrochlore antiferromagnet.

PrRuP shows a metal-insulator (MI) transition at 62 K accompanied by a structural phase transition. Because LaRuP without electrons does not shows the MI transition, electrons in the Pr atom plays an important role in the transition. In order to elucidate a modulation of electronic states of Pr, we have carried out a resonant X-ray scattering study of PrRuP at Pr - and -edges. Below , resonant signal at the absorption main-edge was successfully observed at the superlattice reflections of the modulation vector in addition to the energy-independent component from the lattice distortion. Because the reflection contains the difference of anomalous scattering factors between two Pr atoms in the unit cell, two different electronic states are actually ordered below . Furthermore we found that the polarization of X-ray is mostly unrotated even at the resonance, which indicates that the resonant scattering in PrRuP is almost isotropic.

The muon Knight shift is independent of temperature passing through down to 20mK at 3 and 17kOe, indicating that the local spin susceptibility does not decrease in the superconducting state. This result is evidence that spin-triplet superconductivity is realized in PrOsSb.

We report on the Magnetism, magnetic penetration depth and the Knight shift in polycrystalline sample of CePtSi by means of muon spin rotation and relaxation method. The appearance of the internal field under the zero magnetic field in whole volume of the specimen, was observed, which indicating clear evidence of antiferromagnetism. The muon Knight shift was measured down to 20mK at 17kOe. Three different frequencies are seen in the muon spin rotation spectra, which depend on the temperature. The symmetry of the superconducting Cooper pair will be discussed.

The new phase has an AlB-type crystal structure with 3 symmetry which, in contrast to earlier reports, does not exhibit superlattice structure along the -axis. The bulk susceptibility measurement indicates that the upper critical field is much lower than that in superstructured ones for both - and -axis directions. A weak anisotropy in the superconducting order parameter is suggested from the increase of with increasing external field.

Evidence for antiferromagnetic (AF) order in lightly doped samples and that for quasi-static spin glass (SG)-like state in moderately doped ones are obtained by ZF-SR at low temperatures. While the phase diagram is qualitatively similar to that in typical 2-1-4 cuprates including CaNaCuOCl and LaSrCuO, it exhibits a slight shift (expansion) over the axis.

In addition to the specimen with 0.11 (which is close to the AF phase boundary, 0.10), we show that the specimen with 0.15 ( 16 K at zero field) also exhibits the field-induced AF order with a reduced magnitude of the induced moment. The uniform muon Knight shift at a low magnetic field ( 10 Oe) indicates that the AF order is not localized within the cores of flux lines, which is in marked contrast to theoretical predictions for hole-doped cuprates. The presence of anomalous nondiagonal hyperfine coupling between muons and Pr ions is also demonstrated in detail.
