In this paper, we studied the crystal structure and phonon dynamics of tetrahedrites (Cu,Zn)(Sb,As)S. The results revealed that the Cu atoms in a planar coordination are rattling, which effectively scatter phonons. These findings provide a new strategy for the development of highly efficient thermoelectric materials with planar coordination.

The concentration of Nd(III) in a spent nuclear fuel sample was determined with no interference from various matrix elements, including lanthanides and uranium (at a 200-fold excess), with 92 3% recovery. This is due to method's high resolution based on establishing a ternary complex equilibrium during migration in which the hydroxyl ion plays an auxiliary role.

Variations with time in the post-irradiation electrical properties are also investigated. It is found that the radiation degradation of the electrical properties at 331 K is significantly smaller than that at room temperature. Also, all the electrical properties (short-circuit current, open-circuit voltage, output maximum, and fill factor) recover with time after irradiation even at room temperature. The characteristic time of thermal annealing of short-circuit current is larger as the temperature is higher. These results indicate that temperature during irradiation and elapsed time from irradiation to measurement is an important parameter for radiation degradation of a-Si:H solar cells. Therefore, these parameters should be controlled in conducting the ground radiation tests.

Dark conductivity (DC) and photoconductivity (PC) of the undoped samples increased at first due to proton irradiation and then decrease dramatically with increasing proton fluence. However, increased PC was metastable and gradually decreased with time. Similar results were observed in the n-type a-Si:H, whereas the monotonic decrease was observed in the p-type one. The degrees of the DC and the PC decreases became lower as the irradiated proton energy was higher. The increases of both DC and PC are attributed to the temporal donor like center generation, although the additional proton irradiation decrease both the DC and PC by the accumulation of radiation-induced defects, which are act as deep traps and compensate carriers.

The results show that the conductivity drastically increases at first and then decreases on further irradiation. The conductivity enhancement observed only in the low fluence regime lasts for a prolonged period of time when proton irradiation stops in this fluence regime. On the other hand, the photosensitivity has a minimum value around the conductivity peak. This fact indicates that non-equilibrium carriers do not play a dominant role in the electric conduction in this fluence regime. It is found that the anomalous conductivity enhancement is dominated by donor center generation in the low fluence regime. At higher fluences the variation in electric conductivity becomes dominated by non-equilibrium carriers as the generated donor centers disappear. This is a general interpretation of radiation induced conductivity in semiconductors.

Undoped a-Si:H irradiated with 3.0 MeV protons at a fluence regime of 3.110 - 5.010/cm showed a negative Seebeck coefficient although the Seebeck effect was not observed at fluences above 5.310 /cm. These results suggest that donor like centers are generated by low fluence proton irradiation, whereas the donor centers are compensated by radiation-induced defects or themselves disappear after high fluence proton irradiation. These effects decay with time, giving the donor centers a temporal nature.

We performed in-situ measurements of the PC variations induced by 0.10, 1.0 and 10 MeV proton irradiations. The irradiation initially caused an increase in PC in all sample. However, continued irradiation resulted in a dramatic decrease as the irradiation fluence increased. The results obtained in this study suggest that the PC increment is caused not by accumulation of displacement damage. The results of the temperature dependence of PC for a-Si:H before and after 10 MeV proton irradiation showed that such a proton-induced PC increment consisted of two components: one thermally stable and one metastable. The thermally metastable component disappeared in the temperature region of 300 to 340 K. On the contrary, radiation-induced defects were annealed above 340 K.

The maximum heat flux to JT-60SA divertor is estimated to 15 MW/m for 100 s, and a monoblock-type CFC divertor armor is promising. The JT-60SA armor consists of CFC monoblocks, a cooling CuCrZr screw-tube, and a thin OFHC-Cu buffer layer, and the brazed joints are essential for the armor. Metalization inside CFC monoblock is applied for further improvement, and we confirmed again that the mock-up has heat removal capability in excess of ITER requirement. For optimization of the fabrication method and understanding of the production yield, the mock-ups corresponding to quantity produced in one furnace is also produced, and the half of the mock-ups could remove 15 MW/m as required. This summarizes the recent progress of design and mock-up test results for JT-60SA divertor armor.

Photoconductivity (PC) variations of a-Si:H thin films irradiated with 0.10, 1.0 or 10 MeV protons were investigated. According to the results, the PC values of all samples once increased and after that decreased dramatically. In order to obtain the knowledge about the anomalous PC increment, time dependence of the PC value increased by 10 MeV proton irradiation was also investigated. As a result, even the PC value after 270 hours was over twice higher than that before the irradiation, though the PC values decreased with time. However, the PC value became almost equivalent to the PC before the proton irradiation by applying light-soaking. These results mean that the anomalous PC increment is metastable.

Sodium is the most promising candidate of an FBR coolant because of its excellent properties such as high thermal conductivity. Whereas, sodium reacts with water/air and its opaqueness makes it difficult to inspect sodium components. These weaknesses of sodium affect not only plant safety but also plant availability (economy). To overcome these sodium weak points, the appropriate countermeasure must be adopted to commercialized FBR plants. This report describes the working group activities for sodium/water reaction of steam generators (SG), in-service inspection for sodium components and sodium leak due to sodium components boundary failure. The prospect of each countermeasure is discussed in the viewpoint of the commercialized FBR plants. (1)Sodium/water reaction. The principle of the countermeasure for sodium/water reaction accidents was organized in the viewpoint of economy (the investment of SG and the plant availability). The countermeasures to restrain failure propagation were investigated for a large-sized SG. Preliminary analysis revealed the possibility of minimizing tubes failure propagation by improving the leak detection system and the blow down system. Detailed failure propagation analysis will be required and the early water leak detection system and rapid blow down system must be evaluated to realize its performance. (2)In-service inspection (ISI&R). The viewpoint of the commercialized plant's ISI&R was organized by comparing with the prototype reactor's ISI&R method. We also investigated short-term ISI&R methods without sodium draining to prevent the degrading of the plant availability, however, it is difficult to realize them with the present technology. Hereafter, the ISI&R of the commercialized plants must be defined by considering its characteristics. (3)Sodium leak from the components. This report organized the basic countermeasure policy for primary and secondary sodium leak accidents. Double-wall structure of sodium piping was ...
