Comprehending the blanket structure

Suzuki, Satoshi; Akiba, Masato; Saito, Masakatsu*

Purazuma, Kaku Yugo Gakkai-Shi, 82(11), p.768 - 774, 2006/11

The functions and the requrements of blanket components including first wall are presented in this paper. The structural aspects and design of the ITER blanket, sheilding blanket and test blanket module, are described from the thermo-mechanical engineering point of view. In addition, the prospects toward the DEMO blanket system are also shown.

Comprehending the structure of a vacuum vessel and in-vessel components of fusion machines, 2; Comprehending the divertor structure

Suzuki, Satoshi; Akiba, Masato; Saito, Masakatsu*

Purazuma, Kaku Yugo Gakkai-Shi, 82(10), p.699 - 706, 2006/10

Among in-vessel components in fusion devices, a divertor is subjected to highest heat flux from plasma. In this paper, from a thermo-mechanical point of view, functional requirements for divertor components, conditions to meet the requirements, structural characteristics and a design concept are discussed by taking the ITER device as an example. A prospect toward the realization of DEMO divertor is also discussed from a viewpoint of its material selection.

Micro pit formation by mercury-sphere collision

The development of a MW-class spallation neutron source facility is being carried out under the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) Project promoted by JAERI and KEK. A mercury target working as the spallation neutron source will be subjected to pressure waves generated by rapid thermal expansion of mercury due to a pulsed proton beam injection. The pressure wave will impose dynamic stress on the vessel and deform the vessel, which would cause cavitation in mercury. To evaluate the effect of mercury micro jets, driven by cavitation bubble collapse, on the micro-pit formation, analyses on mercury sphere collision were carried out: single bubble dynamics and collision behavior on interface between liquid and solid, which take the nonlinearity due to shock wave in mercury and the strain rate dependency of yield stress in solid metal into account. Analytical results give a good explanation to understand relationship between the micro-pit formation and material properties: the pit size could decrease with increasing the yield strength of materials.

Three kinds of video materials on the radioactive material leak accident which happened in J-PARC on May 23, 2013 have been produced. These have been screened on the "J-PARC Safety Day" to encourage the J-PARC staff members to keep the memory, to pass on the lessons learned to the next generation, and to use them for future safety.
