We investigated the variability in $$^{137}$$Cs activity concentration in individual aquatic insects in detritivorous caddisfly (${it Stenopsyche marmorata}$) and carnivorous dobsonfly (${it Protohermes grandis}$) larvae from the Ota River, Fukushima. Caddisfly larvae showed sporadically higher radioactivity, whereas no such outliers were observed in dobsonfly larvae. Autoradiography and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed that these caddisfly larvae samples contained radiocesium-bearing microparticles (CsMPs), which are insoluble Cs-bearing silicate glass particles. CsMPs were also found in potential food sources of caddisfly larvae, such as periphyton and drifting particulate organic matter, indicating that larvae may ingest CsMPs along with food particles of similar size. Although CsMPs distribution and uptake by organisms in freshwater ecosystems is relatively unknown, our study demonstrates that CsMPs can be taken up by aquatic insects.

We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn$$_{2}$$VAl single crystals by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and resonant soft X-ray inelastic scattering (RIXS). We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all the constituent elements. The Mn L$$_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by spectral simulations based on density-functional theory, indicating the itinerant character of the Mn 3$$d$$ states. On the other hand, the V 3$$d$$ electrons are rather localized since the ionic model can qualitatively explain the V L$$_{2,3}$$ XAS and XMCD spectra. This picture is consistent with local $$dd$$ excitations revealed by the V L$$_{3}$$ RIXS.

A magnetic field is predicted to emerge on a particle in a rotating body even if the body is electrically neutral. This emergent field is called a Barnett field. We show that nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) enables direct measurement of the Barnett field in solids. We rotated both a sample and an NMR coil synchronously at high speed and found an NMR shift whose sing reflects that of the nuclear magnetic moments. This result provides direct evidence of the Barnett field. The use of NMR for Barnett field measurement enables the unknown signs of nuclear magnetic moments in solids to be determined.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

We present spin pumping using a Heusler alloy Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt bilayer film. A spin current is produced by a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) technique. The pure spin current injected into the Pt layer from the Co$$_2$$MnSi layer is detected by the inverse spin-Hall effect (ISHE), which converts the spin current into an electric current. We estimated a damping constant of the Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt bilayer film from an angular dependence of FMR spectra. Using the damping constant efficiency of spin pumping from the Co$$_2$$MnSi layer is evaluated. We found that a mixing conductance at the Co$$_2$$MnSi/Pt interface is comparable to that at a permalloy/Pt interface.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Stability of residual stress induced by laser peening under cyclic mechanical loading

Sano, Yuji*; Akita, Koichi; Takeda, Kazuya*; Sumiya, Rie*; Tazawa, Toshiyuki*; Saito, Toshiyuki*; Narazaki, Chihiro*

International Journal of Structural Integrity, 2(1), p.42 - 50, 2011/01

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of compressive residual stress induced by laser peening under external loading on an age-hardened high-strength aluminum alloy A2024-T3, a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel SUS316L (Type 316L) and a nickel-based alloy NCF600 (Alloy 600). The surface residual stress was measured intermittently by X-ray diffraction during cyclic uniaxial loading. The compressive residual stress due to laser peening significantly decreased during the first few cycles at stress ratio of 0.1 with the maximum loading stress exceeding the 0.2 per cent yield stress. Under symmetric loading at the stress ratio of -1 to A2024-T3, a major decrease took place in the compression side of the first loading cycle. The surface residual stresses remained in compression within all the extent of the present experiments, even if the maximum loading stress exceeded the yield stress of the materials.

Interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) in Ar$$_2$$, ArKr and Kr$$_2$$ following Ar 2p or Kr 3d Auger decay has been investigated by means of momentum-resolved electron-ion-ion-coincidence spectroscopy. This sequential decay leads to Coulombic dissociation into dication and monocation. Simultaneously determining the kinetic energy of the ICD electron and the kinetic energy release between the two atomic ions, we could unambiguously identify the ICD channels. We find that, in general, spin conserved ICD, in which the singlet (triplet) dicationic state produced via the atomic Auger decay preferentially decays to the singlet (triplet) state, transferring the energy to the other atom, is faster than the spin-flip ICD, in which the Auger final singlet (triplet) dicationic state decays to the triplet (singlet) state.

Here we report the new features and improvements in our latest release of the H-Invitational Database, a comprehensive annotation resource for human genes and transcripts. H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

The first excited state of $$^{36}$$Ca was measured at GSI for the first time. The measured $$2^+_1$$ energy is found to be 3015(16) keV, which is lower than its mirror nucleus $$^{36}$$S by as large as 276 keV. The structure of those nuclei is studied by the shell model. It is found that those nuclei can be well described by the $$sd$$ valence space. The large energy shift between them is caused by the Thomas-Ehrman effect. We presented that the energy shift in the $$sd$$ shell region can be explained by the shell model with a phenomenological treatment of the Thomas-Ehrman effect.
