Analysis of the radioactivity concentrations in asphalt- or cement-solidified products generated from research facilities

In order to establish the practical evaluation methods such as scaling factor method to determine the radioactivity concentrations of the important nuclides for safety assessment of disposal of radioactive wastes, we analyzed low-level radioactive liquid waste (56 samples), which is generated from various research facilities at Nuclear Science Research Institute from FY1998 to FY2007 and accumulated the radioactivity concentrations data (563 data) of the 17 important nuclides. We investigated the correlation of the radioactivity concentrations of the important nuclides with the "Key nuclides ($$^{60}$$Co or $$^{137}$$Cs)". In present paper, the radioactivity concentrations data of the 17 important nuclides and the results of the correlation of the radioactivity concentrations are summarized for the data to establish the practical evaluation methods to determine the radioactivity concentrations in asphalt-solidified or cement-solidified products.

A conceptual design for JSFR and developments of innovative technologies are implemented. A compact RV has been designed to enhance the economy. The regarding development results have been reflected to the RV design. An innovative CV design has been implemented with elemental tests to reduce the construction cost. SASS and the NC DHRS have been designed to enhance the safety, with the irradiation data acquired in Joyo and the development of a 3-dimensional thermal-hydraulic evaluation method. An approach for ISI/R has been provided to be applicable for FR characteristics, and the developmental studies on innovative inspection technologies have been progressed. Other technologies including double-walled pipes with short elbows, a pump-integrated IHX are also being developed. These results, together with a preliminary conceptual design study on a demonstrative reactor for JSFR, will be utilized as resources in 2010 to determine which innovative technologies should be adopted.

Propety data of MOX, Zinc Stearate, etc. were investigated and examined as part of the development for criticality accident evaluation method for MOX fuel fabrication facility. Property data gathered for the powders of MOX, UO$$_{2}$$, Zinc Stearate, Tungsten and their mixture were density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and etc. as well as the data concerning fluidization or degree of mixing.

Artificial cloud generation experiment was performed using a huge vertical pit located in Kamaishi iron-copper mine to investigate the characteristics of cloud. The physical and chemical properties of individual cloud droplets were examined by microscopic analysis at Kyoto university and micro-PIXE analysis at TIARA. The process of growth of cloud was clarified based on the result on droplet size, its distribution, droplet number concentration, and the change in distribution of chlorine in droplet as the function of size.

Development of a criticality evaluation method considering the particulate behavior of nuclear fuel

In the conventional criticality evaluation of the nuclear powder system, the effects of particulate behavior have not been considered. In other words, it is difficult to reflect the particle behavior into the conventional criticality evaluation. We have developed a novel criticality evaluation code to resolve this issue. The criticality evaluation code, coupling a Discrete Element Method simulation code with a continuous-energy Monte Carlo transport code, makes it possible to study the effect of the particulate behavior on a criticality evaluation. The criticality evaluation code has been applied to the powder system of the MOX fuel powder agitation process. The criticality evaluations have been performed under mixing the MOX fuel powder in a stirred vessel to investigate the effects of the powder boundary deformation and particulate mixture conditions on the criticality evaluation. The evaluation results revealed that the powder uniformity mixture condition and the boundary deformation could make the neutron effective multiplication factor decrease.

Micro-PIXE technique for the study of asian dust sources

As the source of Asian dust particles, the sands at four different desert areas in China were to be the target of bulk and single analyses by means of PIXE and micro-PIXE analyses, respectively. The physical properties of desert sands like morphology, color, and size were basically determined. Also the chemical characteristics of bulk sands of each desert were specified as the relative elemental mass. The elemental maps and spectra for individual sands allow us to understand the nature of individual sands. Consequently, the physicochemical properties of desert sands obtained from this study can be helpful to understand what kinds of man-made pollutants and sea-salts are incorporated into natural Asian dust particles.

Replication of individual snow crystals for their subsequent chemical analysis using micro-PIXE

A snow crystal scavenges earozol particles and trasfer various elements in atomosphere through heterogenious nucleation. The snow has many complicated crystal shapes which results in difficulty in comparison of its environmental purification function directly with that of raindrops. The replica of individual snow crystal grain was prepared by their immobilization on the collodion film. The replica samples were analized by micro-PIXE at JAERI and PIXE st Kyoto university. The following results are obtained: (1) Size(circumscribed diameter) of individual snow crystal are in the range of 0.12-2.5mm, (2)snow crystal grows from hexagnal plate to dendritic sectored plate, (3) major elements captured by a snow crystal are Si,S,K,Ca,Fe,S, (4)there is relation between snow crystal size and captured-element masses. The result leads us to presume the chemical inner-structure and the elemental mixing state in/on single snow crystal.
