It is challenging to clearly distinguish the impacts of the optical field and collisional ionization in the evolution of the charge state of a plasma produced when matter interacts with high-intensity laser pulses. In this work, time-dependent calculations of plasma kinetics are used to show that it is possible only when low-density gaseous targets with sufficiently small clusters are used. In the case of Ar plasma, the upper limit of the cluster radius was estimated to be $$R_0 = 0.1 mu$$m.

With the increasing importance of light-responsive materials, it is vital to analyze the relationship between function and structural changes induced by light irradiation. Small-angle scattering (SAS) is effective for such structural analysis. However, quantitatively capturing local molecular structure formation and molecular reactions at a scale of less than 1 nm via SAS is difficult. In this study, to analyze the structure of non-equilibrium phenomena in light-responsive materials, a new sample environment has been developed for a time-of-flight small- and wide-angle neutron scattering instrument (TAIKAN), comprising a UV-Vis irradiation system, UV-Vis absorption measurement equipment and photodetector. Simultaneous measurement of small-angle neutron scattering and UV-Vis absorption was achieved. This system was used to demonstrate the in situ observation of UV-Vis irradiation-induced structural change of micelles formed by a light-responsive surfactant sample in an aqueous solution.

Current status of the spoke cavity prototyping for the JAEA-ADS linac

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has proposed an accelerator-driven subcritical system (ADS) to efficiently reduce high-level radioactive waste generated at nuclear power plants. One of the challenging R&D aspects of ADS is the reliability of the accelerator. In preparation for the full-scale design of the CW proton linac for the JAEA-ADS, we are now prototyping a low-beta (around 0.2) single spoke cavity. Since there is no experience in Japan in manufacturing a superconducting spoke cavity, prototyping and performance testing of the cavity is essential to ensure the feasibility of the JAEA-ADS linac. In the Japanese fiscal year 2021, we have started welding cavity parts together. By preliminarily examining the electron beam welding conditions, each press-formed niobium part was joined with a smooth welding bead. At present, we have fabricated the cavity's body part.

The influence of atmospheric water vapor on the multistep thermal decomposition of perlite concrete was investigated in detail by separating the component reaction steps using kinetic deconvolution analysis (KDA). The retardation of thermal decomposition of Ca(OH)$$_{2}$$ and the acceleration of thermal decomposition of CaCO$$_{3}$$ were identified as specific effect of atmospheric water vapor.

Based on the regulations (the safety regulation of Tokai Reprocessing Plant, the safety regulation of nuclear fuel material usage facilities, the radiation safety rule, the regulation about prevention from radiation hazards due to radioisotopes, which are related with the nuclear regulatory acts, the local agreement concerning with safety and environment conservation around nuclear facilities, the water pollution control law, and by law of Ibaraki Prefecture), the effluent control of liquid waste discharged from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Laboratories of Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been performed. This report describes the effluent control results of the liquid waste in the fiscal year 2018. In this period, the concentrations and the quantities of the radioactivity in liquid waste discharged from the reprocessing plant, the plutonium fuel fabrication facilities, and the other nuclear fuel material usage facilities were much lower than the limits authorized by the above regulations.

Sample environment (SE) team at the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) in J-PARC has worked on development and operation of SE equipment and devices. All the members belong to one sub-team at least, such as Cryogenic and magnet, High temperature, High pressure, Soft matter and special environment including Pulse magnet, Hydrogen environment, Light irradiation and $$^3$$He spin filter. Cryostats, a magnet, furnaces, a VX-6-type Paris-Edinburgh press and a prototype of a Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping (SEOP) based $$^3$$He spin filter for polarized neutron beam experiments are in operation. Furthermore, a prototype of compact power supply for a pulsed magnet system is currently developed. In the J-PARC Research Building, several pieces of equipment for softmatter research such as a rheometer and a gas and vapor adsorption measurement instrument have been prepared.

Neutron devices such as neutron detectors, optical devices including supermirror devices and $$^{3}$$He neutron spin filters, and choppers are successfully developed and installed at the Materials Life Science Facility (MLF) of the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Tokai, Japan. Four software components of MLF computational environment, instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis, and a database, have been developed and equipped at MLF. MLF also provides a wide variety of sample environment options including high and low temperatures, high magnetic fields, and high pressures. This paper describes the current status of neutron devices, computational and sample environments at MLF.

Evidence for appearance of an internal field in the ordered state of CeRu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$ by $$mu^+$$SR

We report zero-field $$mu$$$$^{+}$$SR measurements made at J-PARC on CeRu$$_2$$Al$$_{10}$$. Below the phase transition temperature $$T_0sim27$$K, a clear modulation of $$mu$$$$^{+}$$ polarization due to an internal field is observed, indicating that magnetic ordering takes place. Compared with the internal field expected from the effective magnetic moment in the disordered state, the observed internal field at the $$mu$$$$^{+}$$ site is quite small. This indicates that the ordered Ce magnetic moment is small ($$sim10^{-2}$$$$mu$$$$_{rm B}$$) and/or the nearest pair of Ce magnetic moments are mutually anti-parallel. The $$T$$-dependence of the internal field is somewhat peculiar, suggesting that another ordering is taking place as well.

At the J-PARC MLF muon science facility (MUSE), muon experimental instruments are operated by means of a Muon Control System. Positron lifetime measurement on centrifuged Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ intermetallic compound

Recently, we formed atomic-scale graded structures in some miscible alloys and observed the decomposition in Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ intermetallic compound by sedimentation of atoms under strong gravitational field. In this study, we measured positron lifetime of centrifuged Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$, to which the composition change was very small as it was treated at low temperature. It was found that the positron lifetime became longer than that of starting state. This indicated that the point defects (vacancy or divacancy) increased in the sample by centrifugal treatment. We are now investigating the relationship between increase in point defects and sedimentation of atoms.

Design of the pulse bending magnets for the injection system of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC

The pulse bending magnets for the injection system of the 3-GeV RCS in J-PARC has been designed. The injection system consists of the pulsed bending magnets, which are four horizontal bending magnets (shift bump) and four horizontal painting magnets (h-paint bump) for the injection bump orbit, and two vertical painting magnets (v-paint magnet). The injection beam energy and the extraction beam power are 400 MeV and 1 MW at 25 Hz repetition rate, respectively. The acceptance to include the injection beam, the painting beam and the circulating beam at the shift bump points is a 388 mm wide and a 242 mm high. The shift bump has been designed using a 3D magnetic analysis code, which accomplished less than 0.4 % field deviation under 0.26 T excitation level.

In System analysis has been performed to evaluate the thermal-hydraulics effect of the tube rapture accident. In addition, lifted flow rate by gas injection in the lead-bismuth has been measured to confirm the applicability of existing void fraction correlations based on the drift-flux model by Zuber-Findlay. As a result, it is clarified that the cooling capability is successfully maintained also in case of the tube rapture accident, because the flow reversal is limited to only 1/8 sector of downward flow area due to the tube support wall structure in the steam generator. And also, the applicability of existing void fraction correlations to Lead-Bismuth is confirmed by the gas injection experiment.

Main issues of structural integrity, seismic integrity and operation are studied to confirm feasibilities of the medium size lead-bismuth cooled reactor as a candidate for one of the concepts of fast reactor in the feasibility studies on commercialized FBR cycle system. The results are following. (1) Integrity under loading of earthquake (a) Reactor system: Seismic integrity of the reactor is confirmed. (b) Upper core structures and fuel exchanging machine: Those structures are necessary for increasing stiffness by bonding. (2) Structural integrity for thermal loading Characteristics of both the medium size lead-bismuth cooled reactor and the large size sodium cooled reactor in the feasibility studies are arranged and structural integrity for thermal loading is evaluated about particular phenomena of thermal stratification and thermal striping. (3) Operation Feasibility of the natural circulation operation is confirmed. (a) Water-steam supply system concerned with control system (b) Control characteristics and transient characteristics of lead-bismuth reactor (c) Initial start-up operation concerned with preheating and charging of coolant (4) Safty Core integrity on SG tube rupture is evaluated to be confirmed its safety, by analyzing thermal hydraulic behavior of transient of power, flow and temperature, by calculating characteristics of core and by evaluating additional reactivity by steam coming into core region. (5) Internal core structures design and system power balance design.
