The properties of low-pH cement used in the geological disposal of radioactive waste may change through atmospheric carbonation and degradation caused by groundwater during the long-term operation of a repository. In this study, we investigated the effects of atmospheric carbonation and groundwater contact on the chemical, microstructural, and transport properties of shotcrete made from low-pH, high-fly-ash silica-fume cement (HFSC) over a period of 16 years in an underground research laboratory. In both carbonated and degraded zones of the HFSC shotcrete, capillary porosity increased for pores of $$<$$300 nm in diameter, and the total porosity was higher than in undegraded zones. These changes in porosity may be associated with the decalcification of calcium-silicate-hydrate and decomposition of ettringite. Such changes were minor in altered zones of OPC shotcrete, indicating that HFSC shotcrete is less resistant to atmospheric carbonation and groundwater leaching under the studied conditions. However, the hydraulic conductivity in HFSC was low enough to fulfill the specific functional requirements of low-pH cements for geological disposal.

The Waste Treatment Facility No.2 has equipment that can process solid waste with relatively high radioactive levels generated within the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. This facility had been constructed under the old Building Standards Act. Seismic evaluation based on a new regulatory requirements enforced in December 2013 was executed, thereby, it was found that the seismic resistance requirements was insufficient according to the current Building Standards Act. Therefore, seismic reinforcement works was carried out from November 2018 to February 2020. In this report, seismic reinforcement design, works, test and inspection was complied.

The disposal of radioactive waste from the research facility need to calculate from the radioactivity concentration that based on variously nuclear fuels and materials. In Japan Atomic Energy Agency Oarai Research and Development Institute, the study on considering disposal is being advanced among the facilities which generate radioactive waste as well as the facilities which process radioactive waste. This report summarizes a study result in FY2020 about the evaluation method to determine the radioactivity concentration in radioactive waste on Oarai Research and Development Institute.

Odd-parity autoionizing levels of uranium observed by two-color two-step photoionization optogalvanic spectroscopy

Two-color two-step photoionization optogalvanic spectroscopy was performed using high-repetition-rate titanium sapphire lasers and a uranium hollow cathode lamp to find the two-step resonance ionization schemes of uranium. Many ionization transitions were observed by exciting uranium atoms in a ground state into five, even parity, excited levels with the first-step laser and by scanning the second-step laser wavelengths. By blocking the first-step laser, single-color, two-photon ionization transitions were also identified. From these results, we have found more than 50 odd-parity autoionizing levels of uranium in the energy, ranging from the ionization potential (49958.4 cm$$^{-1}$$) to 51150 cm$$^{-1}$$. The determined energy levels are within 1 cm$$^{-1}$$ of previously reported values.

Upgrades for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC) involving a new superconducting linac (SRILAC) are currently underway at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory (RIBF). It is crucially important to develop nondestructive beam measurement diagnostics. We have developed a beam energy position monitor (BEPM) system which can measure not only the beam position but also the beam energy simultaneously by measuring the time of flight of the beam. We fabricated 11 BEPMs and completed the position calibration to obtain the sensitivity and offset for each BEPMs. The position accuracy has been achieved to be less than $$pm$$ 0.1 mm by using the mapping measurement.

The plastic collapse behavior and strength were investigated for an austenitic stainless steel pipe with two 90$$^{circ}$$ through-wall notches perpendicular to the pipe axis direction. Double-notch specimens with various notch separation distances were coated with photo-plastic film. Arbitrary combined axial tensile and bending loads were applied to the specimens. Changes in the photo-plastic fringe pattern were observed during the tests to investigate the plastic collapse behavior. The plastic collapse strength was evaluated using a model based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body. The photo-plastic fringe patterns at the experimental plastic collapse point differed based on the loading history. Thus, the plastic collapse behavior depends on the loading history. In addition, the plastic collapse strength differed based on the loading history and hardly depended on the notch separation distance. The experimental plastic collapse occurred before reaching the theoretical plastic point for only some pure-tension loading tests. Thus, the model analysis based on an elastic-perfectly plastic body used in this study might give an unconservative estimate for the plastic collapse of a stainless steel pipe subjected to a pure tension load.

Ningyo-toge Environmental Engineering Center has been conducting environmental remediation of the Ningyo-toge Uranium Mine, after decades of mine-related activities were terminated. Its purposes are to take measures to ensure safety and radiation protection from the exposure pathways to humans in future, and to prevent the occurrence of mining pollution. As part of the remediation, upstream part of the Yotsugi Mill Tailings Pond, the highest prioritized facility, has been remediated to fiscal year 2012. Multi-layered capping has been constructed using natural material, after specifications and whole procedure being examined in terms of long-term stability, radiation protection, economics, etc. Monitoring has been carried out to confirm the effectiveness of the capping, in terms of settlement, dose and radon exhalation rates, etc. Monitoring of drainage volume of penetrated rainwater is planned. Accumulated data will be examined and used for remediation of downstream part of the Pond.

In JAEA, an ITER relevant control system for ITER gyrotron was developed according to Plant Control Design Handbook. This control system was developed based on ITER CODAC Core System and implemented state machine control of gyrotron operation system, sequential timing control of gyrotron oscillation startup, and data acquisition. The operation of ITER 170 GHz gyrotron was demonstrated with ITER relevant power supply configuration. This system is utilized for gyrotron operation test for ITER procurement. This report describes the architecture of gyrotron operation system, its basic and detailed design, and recent operation results.

IFMIF is an accelerator based neutron facility having two set of linear accelerators each producing 125mA/CW deuterium ion beams (250mA in total) at 40MeV. The LIPAc (Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator) being developed in the IFMIF-EVEDA project consists of an injector, a RFQ accelerator, and a part of superconducting Linac, whose target is to demonstrate 125mA/CW deuterium ion beam acceleration up to 9MeV. The injector has been developed in CEA Saclay and already demonstrated 140mA/100keV deuterium beam. The injector was disassembled and delivered to the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan, and the commissioning has started after its reassembly 2014; the first beam production has been achieved in November 2014. Up to now, 100keV/120mA/CW hydrogen ion beam has been produced with a low beam emittance of 0.2 $$pi$$.mm.mrad (rms, normalized).

The recent physics analysis reveals that there is the potential to more than double the drive current at the range of $$rho$$ = 0.4$$sim$$0.6 if a beam steering direction can be modified from toroidal to poloidal. However, the change of steering direction has a significant impact on the design of the Equatorial EC Launcher (EL), especially, mm-wave propagation and blanket shield modules (BSMs) and a knock-on effect impacting the internal shield structure. The EL has three sets of mm-wave beam row and each is composed of eight waveguide lines and a quasi-optical transmission region that is formed a steering and fixed mirror, locating in front of the waveguide outlet. It has been successfully performed that the outstanding configuration of the mirrors is developed, the mirror actuator is changed from the push-pull to pneumatic concept and the modification of the internal shield structure is minimized as much as possible. This creative modification ensures that both mm-wave beams from the middle and bottom row pass through the same BSM opening and then, the feasible and reliable design of BSMs can be carried out. The nuclear analysis of this design modification shows that the residual dose rate at the launcher back end is reduced by 20%. This paper summarizes that the possible solution of the mm-wave design modification enhancing the off axis current drive functionality is developed and ensures the effective mm-wave propagation, feasible design of the EL BSMs and nuclear shield structure.

Under the framework of Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and Euratom, IFMIF/EVEDA project was launched in 2007 to validate the key technologies to realize IFMIF. The most crucial technology to realize IFMIF is two set of linear accelerator each producing 125mA/CW deuterium ion beams up to 40MeV. The prototype accelerator, whose target is 125mA/CW deuterium ion beam acceleration up to 9MeV, is being developed in International Fusion Research Energy Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan. The injector developed in CEA Saclay was delivered in Rokkasho in 2014, and is under commissioning. Up to now, 100keV/120mA/CW hydrogen ion beams and 100keV/90mA/CW duty deuterium ion beams are successfully produced with a low beam emittance of 0.21 $$pi$$.mm.mrad (rms, normalized). Delivery of RFQ components will start in 2015, followed by the installation of RF power supplies in 2015.

Progress and status of the gyrotron development for the JT-60SA ECH/CD system

A gyrotron for electron cyclotron heating and current drive (ECH/CD) has been developed for JT-60SA (Super-Advanced). In high-power, long-pulse operations, oscillations of 1 MW/100 s have been demonstrated at both 110 GHz and 138 GHz, for the first time. These results fully satisfied the requirements for JT-60SA. Moreover, it was experimentally shown that the higher power operation at each frequency is expected to be acceptable for this gyrotron from the viewpoint of heat load at the cavity resonator, collector, and stray radiation absorbers. An oscillation at 82 GHz, which is an additional frequency, has been demonstrated up to 2 s at the output power of 0.4 MW, so far. High power experiments toward higher power of 1.5 MW (110/138 GHz) and 1 MW (82 GHz) are ongoing.
