We developed an alkali-resistant hydrogel from carboxymethyl cellulose nanofibers (CMCF) using freeze-drying and mild heating, which induces partial esterification and densifies the network while maintaining porosity. The resulting hydrogels remain stable at pH 9.7 and allow uniform polydopamine (PDA) coating at pH 8.5. The PDA-coated hydrogels exhibit high water content, robust stability, and excellent biocompatibility, supporting 3D culture of human fibroblasts for over 30 days. This green and versatile platform offers potential for regenerative medicine and environmental applications.
