Spatial profiles of superconductivity were obtained by conductance measurements at zero-bias voltage. Critical magnetic fields for vortex penetration and expulsion and for superconductivity breaking were measured for each island. The critical fields depending on the lateral size of the islands and existence of the minimum lateral size for vortex formation were observed.

A software system for straightforward and quick conceptual studies and technical evaluations of fast breeder reactor plants has been developed, mainly targeting the Japanese Demonstration Fast Breeder Reactor Monju. The studies and evaluations by this system used to be limited within steady and nominal conditions, excluding influences by changing specification values in accidental conditions. In this fiscal year, a new software component has been included in the system for simplified evaluation of transient characteristics, which is an essential for complete design of an FBR plant. This new evaluation function enabled to detect specifications to vary over acceptable range in transient conditions, and to notify necessity for re-adjustment of steady state design specification values. This system was also utilized to generate a sensitivity survey program in order to evaluate appropriateness of Monju design. The appropriateness of Monju design was evaluated in two ways. The first one is to follow specification selecting sequence as the as-built Monju has actually been designed. The second one is hypothetical deviations of major specifications of Monju and observation of the influences on other specifications. As a result, Monju design was confirmed to be adequate from the view point of need to meet design limitations at the design stage of Monju. This system is expected to be systematically re-arranged, because the system has now considerably complicated configuration after additions of various programs for many objects. This arrangement will facilitate future contribution of this system to technical studies in order for development of FBRs.

How to utilize the waste of heat is one of the most important issues for nuclear engineering. Its technological impact is significant in reduction of environmental burdens and minimization of CO2 emission through nuclear power generation with high efficiency. Research and development for thermoelectric power generation still weighs its importance on the search for high figure-of-merit materials; many engineering issues are still present to be solved toward promising solution to engineering issues are still present to be solved toward promising solution to engineering demand from market. Inthis study, new engineering ideas are proposed to make full use of heat waste via the prototype system for thermoelectric power generation. Sodium loop at the International Cooperation and Technology Development Center of Tsuruga Head Office in JNC was used as a heat source to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed prototype system. The present research activities are categorized by the following elements.

The result indicated that the best neutronic performance could be obtained for a decoupled H moderator in a Pb reflector by optimizing the premoderator and adopting an appropriate decoupling energy, even compared with optimized one in a Be reflector.

An optimization study on the premoderator, the reflector material choice and a length of the liner is carried out for the design of high performance decoupled hydrogen moderator. NMTC/JAM and MCNP-4C are used for the neutronics calculation. The result indicates that, assuming premoderator dimensions and decoupling energy is controlled, the decoupled hydrogen moderator with a premoderator can provide better pulse characteristics than that without the premoderator for a Be reflector. On the selection of the reflector material, it is clearly shown that Pb and Hg reflectors give merits in using the premoderator for higher intensity and reduction of energy deposition in moderator. It is also shown that a H2O premoderator provides a short tail while a D2O premoderator provides the high peak intensity. Minimum liner length is evaluated to be 20 cm from the viewpoint of neutronics.

In the experimental fast reactor Joyo, Top of wrapper tube of the MARICO-2 test subassembly was bent onto the in-vessel storage rack. The 6 pins to connect Handling head and MARICO-2 rapper tube have become lost parts. Perspective applicable was obtained for confirmed the mechanical impact and search method of the lost part is in the transfer pot filled of sodium by element tests.
