Clinical trials of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) for malignant brain tumors and head and neck cancers have been performed at the research reactor JRR-4. BNCT is a kind of radiation therapy using a nuclear reaction with thermal neutrons and boron ($$^{10}$$B) elements administered to a patient. The design specifications of all types of reflector elements were changed due to a trouble of a reflector element in JRR-4. In the production of the new reflector elements, they were designed with the influence for the neutron beam facility by the analytical calculation. After the installation of the new reflector elements, the performance of the neutron beam facility was verified by measurement such as a free air experiment and a water phantom experiment. The calculation error used in the treatment planning for BNCT can be estimated by comparing the results of our calculation with the corresponding experimental data.

Resumption of JRR-4 and characteristics of the neutron beam for BNCT

Nakamura, Takemi; Horiguchi, Hironori; Kishi, Toshiaki; Motohashi, Jun; Sasajima, Fumio; Kumada, Hiroaki*

Proceedings of 14th International Congress on Neutron Capture Therapy (ICNCT-14) (CD-ROM), p.379 - 382, 2010/10

The clinical trials of BNCT have been conducted using JRR-4. The JRR-4 stopped in January 2008, because the graphite reflector was considerably damaged. For this reason, the specifications of graphite reflectors were renewal. All existing graphite reflectors of JRR-4 were changed by new graphite reflectors. The resumption of JRR-4 was carried out with new graphite reflectors in February 2010. We measured the characteristics of neutron beam at the JRR-4 Neutron Beam Facility. A cylindrical water phantom was put the gap for 1cm from the beam port. TLD and gold wire were inserted within the phantom when the phantom was irradiated. The results of the measured thermal neutron flux and the $$gamma$$ dose in water were compared with MCNP calculations. The calculated results showed the same tendency with the experimental results. These results are proceeding well and will be reported in full paper at July 2010.

JRR-3 and JRR-4 have been providing neutron-transmutation-doped silicon (NTD-Si) by using the silicon NTD process. We have been considering to introduce the neutron filter, which is made of high-purity-titanium, into uniform doping. Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors doped with NTD technology are considered suitable for high power devices with superior performances to conventional Si-based devices. The impurity contents in the high-purity-titanium and SiC were analyzed by neutron activation analyses (NAA) using k$$_{0}$$ standardization method. Analyses showed that the number of impurity elements detected from the high-purity-titanium and SiC were 6 and 9, respectively. Among these impurity elements, Sc detected from the high-purity-titanium and Fe detected from SiC were comparatively long half life nuclides. From the viewpoint of exposure in handling them, we need to examine the impurity control of materials.

Reactor operation training using JRR-4 (Japan Research Reactor No.4) was started in FY 1969, one of the curriculums of Nuclear Technology and Education Center (NuTEC). After that, the program was updated and carried out for reactor operation training, control rod calibration, and measurement of various kind of characteristics. JRR-4 has been contributed for nuclear engineer training that is over 1,700 trainees from bother domestic and foreign countries. JRR-4 can be used for experiment from zero power to 3500kW, and the trainees can make experience to operate the reactor from start up to shut down, not only zero-power experiments (critical approach, control rod calibration, reactivity measurement, etc.) but also other experiments under high power operation (xenon effect, temperature effects, reactor power calibration, etc.). This report is based on various kinds of guidance texts using for training, and collected for operation and experiments for reactor physics.

It is expected that the demand for NTD-Si increases rapidly because of recent productive increase of hybrid-cars. In order to meet the demand, we have investigated the expansion technology of the NTD-Si productivity using the JRR3. This report describes the production of equipment for the external cooling device while proposed as one of the result of the investigation for the JRR-3 uniformity irradiation equipment. After an ingot was irradiated once, it is turned over manually and irradiated again in order irradiate the ingot uniformly. With the conventional equipment, it was necessary to wait the radioactivity of ingot decrease less than the permissible level with holding the ingot in the irradiation equipment. It was effective to shorten the waiting period by using an external cooling device for production increase of NTD-Si. It is expected that the productivity of NTD-Si will be increased by using the external cooling device.

Neutron radiography is useful to inspect macroscopic change in nuclear fuels before and after irradiation. We have been investigated the practicality of neutron imaging plate and neutron CT methods for the inspection of the spent fuels. A fresh UO2 fuel rod was examined by those methods. The test results of those samples are available to develop the system of those methods for the spent fuels and to determine the specifications of the system. Some good images of those samples are obtained by those examinations. The shape of the pellets in the fuel rod is clearly recognized in the image. Those images are analyzed to estimate the size of some parts in the fuel pellets.

Thermal neutron guides at JRR-3 reactor have been upgraded from Nickel mirrors to Ni/Ti multilayer supermirrors. We performed the characteristics experiment of neutron beams transmitted through supermirror neutron guides. Neutron fluxes at the end of the thermal neutron guides were measured by the gold foil activation method on March 2003. We have confirmed that neutron fluxes at the end of thermal neutron guide increases by 6 times. The neutron spectra were also measured at the end of the thermal neutron guides by the time-of-flight method. The wavelength range for the neutron beam is extended and the shorter wavelength neutrons, which had been filtered by the characteristics of curved neutron guides before upgrade, were observed. In this paper, we have performed several Monte Carlo simulation codes using the McStas package in the consideration of the performance of fabricated supermirrors and its alignment errors for the purpose of estimation of instruments performance. We discuss the comparison of the experimental results with results of simulation.

Advanced neutron radiography techniques such as neutron imaging plate (NIP) and Computed Tomography (CT) methods have been investigated the practicality for Post Irradiation Examination (PIE). In this work, an unirradiated fuel rod was examined by NIP and CT methods in order to collect the fundamental data for applying these techniques to PIE.The fuel rod is composed of seven-enriched UO2 pellet and two-natural UO2 pellet that are loaded into a Zircaloy tube. There are somewhat difference in the size and shape among those UO2 pellets. A transmitted and cross-sectional images were obtained by NIP and CT methods, respectively. In the NIP image, the difference in the size, shape, and enrichment among the UO2 pellets is obviously recognized. In the case of CT method, the images clearly show the detailed shape of the cross section in the pellets, in addition, the difference in the enrichment between the natural and enriched pellets is recognized.
