Analysis of the radioactivity concentrations in low-level radioactive waste generated from JRR-2, JRR-3 and hot laboratory facilities

In the future, radioactive wastes which generated from research and testing reactors in Japan Atomic Energy Agency are planning to be buried for the near surface disposal. Therefore, it is required to establish the method to evaluate the radioactivity concentrations of radioactive wastes by the time it starts disposal. In order to contribute to this work, we collected and analyzed the samples generated from JRR-2, JRR-3 and Hot laboratory facilities. In this report, we summarized the radioactivity concentrations of 25 radionuclides ($$^{3}$$H, $$^{14}$$C, $$^{36}$$Cl, $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{63}$$Ni, $$^{90}$$Sr, $$^{94}$$Nb, $$^{93}$$Mo, $$^{99}$$Tc, $$^{108m}$$Ag, $$^{126}$$Sn, $$^{129}$$I, $$^{137}$$Cs, $$^{152}$$Eu, $$^{154}$$Eu, $$^{233}$$U, $$^{234}$$U, $$^{238}$$U, $$^{238}$$Pu, $$^{239}$$Pu, $$^{240}$$Pu, $$^{241}$$Pu, $$^{241}$$Am, $$^{243}$$Am, $$^{244}$$Cm) which were obtained from radiochemical analysis of those samples.

In an attempt to investigate Cs-Te corrosion depth dependence on distribution of chromium carbide precipitation in high chromium steel, Cs-Te corrosion out-pile tests of two 9Cr steels with different distributions of chromium carbide were carried out at 975K for 100h and their corrosion depths were compared. The corrosion is obviously more advanced in a specimen which has grain boundary carbide than in the one that does not. A considerable reason of the result is that the carbide distributed at grain boundaries promoted the corrosion reaction and the corrosion extended along the grain boundary. This is the first case in which the Cs-Te corrosion depth dependence on distribution of chromium carbide precipitation in Fe-Cr steel is clarified experimentally.

In this study, based on the simple and rapid analytical method established from the wastes from research facilities, we created analytical schemes which is applicable to rubble and plants collected at Fukushima Daiichi, then transported to Nuclear Science Research Institute of JAEA. We examined the applicability, and confirmed quantifiability of radioactivity concentration with high recovery rate without being affected by fission products such as $$^{90}$$Sr and $$^{137}$$Cs.

Recently, development of superconducting magnet system with high radiation resistance has been demanded for application in accelerator facilities such as CERN LHC. In order to realize superconducting magnet system with high radiation resistance, it is necessary to develop electrical insulator with high radiation resistance because the electrical insulator is made of organic materials whose radiation resistance is inferior to that of inorganic materials. We developed a glass fiber reinforced plastic with bismaleimide-triazine resin. The developed material showed excellent radiation resistance; the material evolved gases of 5$$times$$10 $$^{-5}$$mol/g and maintained flexural strength of 640MPa (90% of initial value).

Lithium titanate (Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$) is one of the most promising candidates among tritium breeding materials because of its good tritium release. Addition of H$$_{2}$$ to inert sweep gas has been proposed for enhancing the tritium release from tritium breeding materials. However, the mass of Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ was decreased with time in the hydrogen atmosphere. It is assumed that the mass decrease indicates the loss of the oxygen contained in the sample caused by the change from Ti $$^{4+}$$ to Ti $$^{3+}$$, and that the partial pressures of Li-containing species were increased in the hydrogen atmosphere. In order to decrease the mass-change at high temperature, advanced tritium breeding material with added Li should be developed to improve the physical and chemical stability in hydrogen atmosphere. In the case of the Li$$_{2+x}$$TiO$$_{3+y}$$ samples used by the present study, LiOHH$$_{2}$$O and H$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ were proportionally mixed with the molar ratio Li/Ti of either 2.0 and 2.2. These samples are designated as L20 (Li/Ti = 2.0) and L22 (Li/Ti = 2.2), respectively. The results of XRD measurement showed that the phases in advanced tritium breeding material were as follows. L22 existed as non-stoichiometric compound Li$$_{2+x}$$TiO$$_{3+y}$$.

Raman, IR, and visible absorption spectra of scandium trihydride (ScH$$_{3}$$) have been measured at high pressures up to 50 GPa at room temperature. The structural and electronic phase transitions were investigated. Successive hcp-intermediate-fcc phase transitions took place at 25 and 46 GPa. It was suggested that the intermediate phase of ScH$$_{3}$$ has the same structure as that of YH$$_{3}$$. The energy gap of ScH$$_{3}$$ is 1.7 eV at the ambient condition and is closed around 50 GPa, at which the crystal structure transforms to fcc.

Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ is one of the most promising candidates among the proposed solid breeder materials for fusion reactors. Addition of H$$_{2}$$ to inert sweep gas has been proposed for enhancing the release of bred tritium from breeder material. However, the mass of Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ was found to decrease with time in the hydrogen atmosphere. This mass change indicates that the oxygen content of the sample decreased, suggesting the change from Ti$$^{4+}$$ to Ti$$^{3+}$$. In order to control the mass change at the time of high temperature use, the development of lithium titanate which has Li$$_{4}$$TiO$$_{4}$$ additive is expected to be effective.

Raman and visible absorption spectra of YH$$_{3}$$ were measured at high pressures, in order to clarify the structural and electronic phase transitions. The Raman results revealed the presence of an intermediate phase at 9-24 GPa between the low-pressure hexagonal and high-pressure fcc phases. The Y-framework structure and the positions of interstitial H atoms are changed on the transition to the intermediate phase. The results of the absorption measurements demonstrate that the optical band gap begins to close in response to the phase transition.

The Engineering Design Activities (EDA) for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) was performed under the collaboration of Japan, EU, Russia and the US. The EDA was successfully completed in July 2001, in which the development of fabrication technology for advanced components, such as superconducting coils, was conducted. The ITER magnet system consists of Toroidal Field coils, a Central Solenoid (CS), Poloidal Field coils and Correction coils. The construction of these coils requires advanced technologies that fairly exceeded those available at the start of the EDA. Therefore, CS Model Coil and TF Model Coil projects were implemented. To fabricate the CS Model Coil, the fabrication technologies for high performance strand, large cable, winding, heat treatment, joint and insulation are indispensable. This report describes the above detailed fabrication technologies successfully developed in the CS Model Coil Project.
