In an attempt to investigate Cs-Te corrosion depth dependence on distribution of chromium carbide precipitation in high chromium steel, Cs-Te corrosion out-pile tests of two 9Cr steels with different distributions of chromium carbide were carried out at 975K for 100h and their corrosion depths were compared. The corrosion is obviously more advanced in a specimen which has grain boundary carbide than in the one that does not. A considerable reason of the result is that the carbide distributed at grain boundaries promoted the corrosion reaction and the corrosion extended along the grain boundary. This is the first case in which the Cs-Te corrosion depth dependence on distribution of chromium carbide precipitation in Fe-Cr steel is clarified experimentally.

A few carnation cultivars are known to display a peculiar dusky color supposedly caused by anthocyanic vacuolar inclusions (AVIs). The hereditary pattern suggests that the peculiar color is controlled by a single recessive factor tightly linked with existence of AVIs containing non-acylated anthocyanins. To diversify the peculiar color carnation, we produced a bluish purple line displaying a highly novel metallic appearance by crossbreeding. By subjecting the line to ion-beam irradiation, we generated metallic reddish purple, metallic crimson and metallic red lines. All four metallic lines did not have transcripts for anthocyanin malyltransferase. In contrast to the dusky color types, metallic lines have highly condensed AVIs and water-clear vacuolar sap in the petal adaxial epidermal cells. We demonstrated that (1) a factor generating the AVIs is inactivated anthocyanin malyltransferase gene, (2) AVIs in water-clear vacuolar sap in the adaxial epidermal cells generate the novel metallic appearance, and (3) ion beam breeding is a useful tool for increasing metallic colors by changing anthocyanin structure and the level of AVIs.

A CVD diamond has been the reference material of a torus widow for a rf heating system in a fusion reactor. Since the window is in the circumstance of tritium, helium and radio activated dust, it is important to elucidate the effect of ions on chemical structure of the diamond, existing states of tritium and tritium inventory. Polycrystalline CVD diamond disks($$phi$$=10.0mm, t=0.21mm) used in this study are the same grade as rf windows. After sputtering the surface with 1.0 keV Ar$$^{+}$$ to remove oxygen impurity, the sample was irradiated with deuterium (D$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$) or helium ions (He$$^{+}$$) at an angle of 0 degrees to the surface normal. The irradiation energies of deuterium and helium are 0.25 keV D$$^{+}$$ and 0.45 keV He$$^{+}$$, respectively. The structural change of the irradiated sample was measured by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) technique. The C1s peak shift toward lower binding energy side was observed when deuterium ions irradiated. This result indicates that the diamond changes to amorphous carbon due to formation of C-D bond.

Ion implantation method is applied to synthesize B-C-N hybrids and their electronic structures are characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A boron nitride film is deposited on a graphite target by borazine plasma implantation. At the interface between the BN film and the graphite, variety of bonding combinations including B-N, B-C, and C-N are observed. This proved that B-C-N hybrids is formed by this method.
