The "treated water" from which the main radioactive materials were removed contains tritium, and stakeholders in Japan have been debating how to treat it. The amount of treated water stored in the facility has reached its limit, and the Japanese government has decided that the treatment method will be to discharge the water into the ocean by FY 2023 (FY: Fiscal Year). The present research developed a simple and practical tritium monitor for the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) tritiated water release. A simple and practical tritium monitor was developed for FDNPS tritiated water release based on thin plastic scintillator sheets. The developed devices were calibrated using standard tritium solutions and a method for calculating the minimum detectable activity. Fifteen 0.25 mm-thick scintillators can be placed in the 0.26 L flow cell where the sample water is fed, yielding an active surface area of 3,200 mm$$^{2}$$. The efficiency of tritiated water with full water is 0.000035 cps Bq$$^{-1}$$. The minimum detectable activity under simple shielding conditions was 7,800 Bq L$$^{-1}$$ (Measurement time was 3,600 s).

High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors; JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, Vol.5, 464 Pages, 2021/02

As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950$$^{circ}$$C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Tungsten spectra have been observed from Large Helical Device (LHD) and Compact electron Beam Ion Trap (CoBIT) in wavelength ranges of visible to EUV. The tungsten spectra from LHD are well analyzed based on the knowledge from CoBIT tungsten spectra. The C-R model code has been developed to explain the UTA spectra in details. Radial profiles of EUV spectra from highly ionized tungsten ions have been measured and analyzed by impurity transport simulation code with ADPAK atomic database code to examine the ionization balance determined by ionization and recombination rate coefficients. The ablation cloud of the impurity pellet is directly measured with visible spectroscopy.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Extreme ultra-violet (EUV) emission spectra of multiply charged tin ions were measured in the wavelength range of 10-22 nm following charge exchange collisions or the electron impact excitation of tin ions. In charge exchange collisions, we observed both the resonance lines and the emission lines corresponding to the transitions between the excited states. On the other hand, we observed mainly the resonance lines in the electron impact experiments. We can distinguish the resonance lines from other emission lines in the charge exchange spectrum by comparison with the emission lines in the electron impact spectrum.

At Nishinomaki abandoned mine district, the water is acidic and contains much amounts of arsenic. However, arsenic concentration decreases downward without any artificial treatment. To understand the mechanism of the natural attenuation, the acid mine drainage and the ochreous precipitates were collected. The samples were analyzed by XRD, IR, ICP-MS and ion-chromatograph. The precipitates were investigated by selective extraction procedure. These results were interpreted with those calculated by the geochemical code. The contamination of water has been result from oxidation of pyrite and realgar and subsequent release of iron. The released ferrous iron transforms to ferric form by bacterial oxidation and then schwertmannite forms immediately. While the arsenic concentrations in the stream are lowered to background level at downstream, these in the ochreous precipitates are up to 60 mg/g. The iron hydroxide has been known to exhibit the high sorption affinity to arsenate. Hence, arsenic is effectively removed by the schwertmannite from the contaminated water and attenuated naturally.

no journal, ,

Adaptation of the phosphate conversion technique has been evaluated to recycle the spent electrolyte generated from metal electrorefining process which is a kind of pyrochemical reprocessing technologies. The accumulated impurities such as fission products are precipitated as phosphate by adding lithium phosphate and separated from the molten salt in the process. To discuss the conversion reaction, some thermodynamic properties are required however few data have been published relating to the phosphate, they were attempted to be derived from the results of thermal analysis. The pyrochemical behavior and estimation of heat capacity of lanthanum phosphate and lithium phosphate will be introduced in this report.

Adaptation of the phosphate conversion technique has been evaluated to recycle the spent electrolyte generated from metal electrorefining process which is a kind of pyrochemical reprocessing technologies. In the process, accumulated impurities such as fission products are precipitated as phosphate by adding lithium phosphate and separated from the molten salt. The conceptual flow sheet has been discussed based on the thermodynamic property of constituent. However few thermodynamic data have been published relating to the phosphate, they were attempted to be derived from the results of calorimetry and thermal analysis. In this study the enthalpy and the heat capacity were estimated with lithium phosphate and some FP phosphate and the phosphate conversion reactions were evaluated.

The phosphate conversion process has been studied for reuse of spent electrolyte generated from pyrochemical reprocessing. As the fundamental information of thermodynamic data, heat capacities of some kind of phosphate were measured and phosphate conversion reactions were discussed based on such thermodynamic data.
