We have developed a novel acidic diamide-type ligand, and investigated the extraction behavior of rare-earth metal ions using the ligand. It was found that the ligand provides a remarkably high selectivity for scandium among rare-earth elements. In addition, we clarified crystal structure of the complexes by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Scandium (Sc) is an important metal in industries. In this study, we developed a novel carboxylic acid type extractant, Tetraoctyl nitriloacetic acid diacetamide (TONAADA). The extraction behavior of rare-earth elements (REEs) using TONAADA was compared with that of commercial organophosphorus extractants (D2EHPA, PC-88A) and carboxylic acid type extractant (Versatic 10). As the result, TONAADA showed high extraction and separation ability for Sc from the other REEs. D2EHPA and PC-88A also showed quantitative extraction for Sc, however, stripping of metal ions was quite difficult. Versatic 10 provided very low extraction performance, even though it was selective for Sc under neutral aqueous conditions. In contrast, TONAADA can selectivity extract Sc at low pH condition, and quantitatively stripping was possible by 5 M HNO or HCl.

Scandium (Sc) is an important metal in industries such as the airframes and but the solid oxide fuel cells. The commercially available extractants have been used Sc from REEs, however, they have the serious drawbacks for extraction ability or stripping. In this study, we developed a novel carboxylic acid type extractant, Tetraoctyl nitriloacetic acid diacetamide (TONAADA). TONAADA is the tetradentate ligand that connected two amide groups and one carboxyl group by nitrogen donor. We investigated the extraction of REEs using TONAADA, and the separation ability for Sc using TONAADA was compared with that of commercially available extractants. TONAADA has the high extraction and separation ability for Sc, and the quantitative stripping is possible by 5 M HNO or HCl.
