High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors; JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, Vol.5, 464 Pages, 2021/02
As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950
C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

The third model intercomparison project for investigating the atmospheric behavior of
Cs emitted during the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident (FDNPP-MIP) was conducted. A finer horizontal grid spacing (1 km) was used than in the previous FDNPP-MIP. Nine of the models used in the previous FDNPP-MIP were also used, and all models used identical source terms and meteorological fields. Our analyses indicated that most of the observed high atmospheric
Cs concentrations were well simulated, and the good performance of some models improved the performance of the multi-model ensemble. The analyses also confirmed that the use of a finer grid resolution resulted in the meteorological field near FDNPP being better reproduced. The good representation of the wind field resulted in the reasonable simulation of the narrow distribution of high deposition amount to the northwest of FDNPP and the reduction of the overestimation over the area to the south of FDNPP. In contrast, the performance of the models in simulating plumes observed over the Nakadori area, the northern part of Gunma, and the Tokyo metropolitan area was slightly worse.

Cs emitted following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident was conducted by 12 models to understand the behavior of
Cs in the atmosphere. The same meteorological data, horizontal grid resolution, and an emission inventory were applied to all the models to focus on the model variability originating from the processes included in each model. The multi-model ensemble captured 40% of the observed
Cs events, and the figure-of-merit in space for the total deposition of
Cs exceeded 80. Our analyses indicated that the meteorological data were most critical for reproducing the
Cs events. The results also revealed that the differences among the models were originated from the deposition and diffusion processes when the meteorological field was simulated well. However, the models with strong diffusion tended to overestimate the
Cs concentrations.

The plant is designed to demonstrate the system of JAEA commercial plant design GTHTR300C. With construction planned to be completed around 2025, the test plant is expected to be the first-of-a-kind nuclear system operating on two of the advanced energy conversion systems attractive for the HTGR closed cycle helium gas turbine for power generation and thermochemical iodine-sulfur water-splitting process for hydrogen production.

Pre-licensing basic design for a cogenerating HTGR test plant system is presented. The plant to be coupled to existing 30 MWt 950
C test reactor HTTR is intended as a system technology demonstrator for GTHTR300C plant design. More specifically the test plant of HTTR-GT/H
aims to (1)demonstrate the licensability of the GTHTR300C for electricity production by gas turbine and hydrogen cogeneration by thermochemical process and (2) confirm the operation control and safety of such cogeneration system. With construction and operation completion by 2025, the test plant is expected to be the first of a kind HTGR-powered cogeneration plant operating on the two advanced energy conversion systems of closed cycle helium gas turbine for power generation and thermochemical iodine-sulfur water-splitting process for hydrogen production.

We implemented a simple version of a modal-moment aerosol dynamics model and achieved completely dynamic solution of a gas-to-particle mass transfer over a wide range of aerosol diameters from 1 nm to super micro m. To consider a variety of atmospheric aerosol properties, a category approach is utilized: aerosols are distributed into 4 categories, Aitken, accumulation, soot aggregates, and coarse mode. A regional-scale simulation was performed for the entire year of 2006, covering Northeast Asian region. Statistical analysis showed the model reproduced the regional-scale transport and transformation of the major inorganic anthropogenic and natural air constituents within factors of 2 to 5. Modeled size distributions of total weight and chemical components were consistent with the observations, indicating simulations of aerosol mixing types were successful.

bulk metallic glass containing 10vol.%ZrC (ZrC-BMG) was evaluated by measuring the residual strains in the compressive deformed samples using the synchrotron X-ray diffraction and also evaluating the localized deformation behavior around the ZrC particles by the finite element analysis. Phase stress shared by the metallic glass matrix was increased before macroscopic yielding due to local plastic deformation around the ZrC particles. After macroscopic yielding, the phase stress shared by the ZrC phase was drastically increased, and finally the ZrC-BMG was fractured by breaking the ZrC particles reaching its fracture strength.

However, the mechanism of Cu precipitation has not been clarified yet. In this study, the positron lifetime and coincidence Doppler broadening techniques have been used to investigate the recovery behavior of lattice defects such as vacancies, vacancy clusters and dislocations as well as the diffusion behavior of Cu atoms of cold rolled and thermally-aged Fe-Cu alloys. Both vacancies and dislocations caused by cold rolling were reduced through the thermally aging process. Some dislocations remained even after aging at 550
C, although the vacancies almost disappeared after aging at 300
C. Cu clusters precipitate mainly on the dislocations, where is the sinks of the vacancies, caused by the diffusion of Cu atom and vacancies.

collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to
collisions.
