ホウケイ酸ガラス中のガラス成分や廃棄物成分の局所構造は、その化学組成によって変化する。本研究は、ガラス固化体を模擬したガラス(以下、模擬廃棄物ガラス)を対象に軟X線領域のXAFS測定を実施し、原料ガラス成分のホウ素(B)やケイ素(Si)、廃棄物成分の鉄(Fe)やセシウム(Cs)の化学的状態等を評価した。模擬廃棄物ガラスの化学的安定性を把握するため、浸出試験に供したガラス表面を対象に、BのK吸収端、FeのL$$_{3}$$,L$$_{2}$$吸収端及びCsのM$$_{5}$$, M$$_{4}$$吸収端のXANESスペクトル測定を行った。その結果、浸出液に曝露されたガラス表面は変化し、明瞭なXANESスペクトルが得にくくなることが分かった。BのK吸収端XANESスペクトルから、浸出試験後の試料表面は未浸漬の試料表面と比較してB-Oの3配位構造(BO$$_{3}$$)が増加し、4配位構造(BO$$_{4}$$)が減少する傾向を確認した。FeのL$$_{3}$$,L$$_{2}$$吸収端及びCsのM$$_{5}$$, M$$_{4}$$吸収端のXANESスペクトルから、浸漬時間が長くなるに従って、ガラス表面に存在するCsが浸出液中へ溶出することを確認した。未浸漬の模擬廃棄物ガラスを対象に、SiのK吸収端XANESスペクトルを測定した結果、Na$$_{2}$$O濃度によるXANESスペクトルの変化が廃棄物成分濃度による変化より大きいことを確認した。

Multiple proton transfer (PT) controllable by external stimuli plays a crucial role in fundamental chemistry, biological activity, and material science. However, in crystalline systems, controlling multiple PT, which results in a distinct protonation state, remains challenging. In this study, we developed a novel tridentate ligand and iron(II) complex with a short hydrogen bond (HB) that exhibits a PT-coupled spin transition (PCST). Single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements revealed that the positions of the two protons in the complex can be controlled by temperature and photoirradiation based on the thermal- and photoinduced PCST. The obtained results suggest that designing molecules that form short HBs is a promising approach for developing multiple PT systems in crystals.


One-dimensional band structure in quasi-two-dimensional $$eta$$-Mo$$_4$$O$$_{11}$$ revealed by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles calculation

We investigated the electronic structure of $$eta$$-Mo$$_4$$O$$_{11}$$ bulk crystal in the whole Brillouin zone at a normal metallic state by utilizing resonant and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopies and first-principles calculations. Mo 4$$p$$-4$$d$$ resonant photoelectron experiment revealed that the Mo 4$$d$$ electrons of MoO$$_6$$ octahedra mainly contributed to the electrical conductivity. We also demonstrated that the free electron-like band dispersions along $$k_b$$ axis, consisting of Mo 4$$d_{xy}$$ electrons, do not show clear $$k_a$$ and $$k_c$$ dependences and formed a one-dimensional Fermi surface even at the normal state. The observed low-dimensional and anisotropic band structures are expected to induce exotic physical properties such as quantized bulk Hall effect, charge density wave transitions, and Luttinger liquid behavior.


Observation of proton-transfer-coupled spin transition by single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurement

The application of single-crystal neutron diffraction (SCND) to observe proton-transfer phenomena in crystalline compounds exhibiting unusual protonation states or proton dynamics has garnered significant research interest in recent years. However, proton tautomerism, which results in different protonation states before and after proton transfer, has never been observed using the SCND technique. Thus, to observe the proton tautomerism phenomenon by SCND measurements, we developed an iron(II) complex that forms a large crystal and exhibits a proton-transfer-coupled spin transition (PCST). The presence of the two types of proton tautomers was determined by conventional analysis of the proton position by X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Finally, our results confirmed that proton tautomerism was successfully observed for the first time using variable-temperature SCND measurements.

放射線挙動解析コードPHITSは、モンテカルロ法に基づいてほぼ全ての放射線の挙動を解析することができる。その最新版であるPHITS version 3.31を開発し公開した。最新版では、高エネルギー核データに対する親和性や飛跡構造解析アルゴリズムなどが改良されている。また、PHIG-3DやRT-PHITSなど、パッケージに組み込まれた外部ソフトウェアも充実している。本論文では、2017年にリリースされたPHITS3.02以降に導入された新しい機能について説明する。

Partial breakdown of translation symmetry at a structural quantum critical point associated with a ferroelectric soft mode

We report that complete suppression of a phonon-driven structural phase transition causes partial breakdown of a three-dimensional translation symmetry in a well-defined sublattice. This state is revealed for a dielectric compound, Ba$$_{1-x}$$Sr$$_x$$Al$$_2$$O$$_4$$, that comprises an AlO$$_4$$ network incorporated into a hexagonal Ba(Sr) sublattice. Pair distribution function analyses and inelastic neutron scattering experiments provide clear-cut evidence of the AlO$$_4$$ network forming a continuum of Al-O short-range correlations similar to glasses, whereas the Ba(Sr) sublattice preserves the original translational symmetry. This glassy network significantly dampens the phonon spectrum and transforms it into the broad one resembling those typically observed in glass materials.

Visualization of radioactive substances using a freely moving gamma-ray imager based on Structure from Motion

Technology for measuring and identifying the positions and distributions of radioactive substances is important for decommissioning work sites at nuclear power stations. A three-dimensional (3D) image reconstruction method that locates radioactive substances by integrating Structure-from-Motion (SfM) with a Compton camera (a type of gamma-ray imager) has been developed. From the photographs captured while freely moving in an experimental environment, a 3D structural model of the experimental environment was created. By projecting the radioactive substance image acquired by the Compton camera on the 3D structural model, the positions of the radioactive substance were visualized in 3D space. In a demonstration study, the $$^{137}$$Cs-radiation source was successfully visualized in the experimental environment captured by the freely moving cameras. In addition, how the imaging accuracy is affected by uncertainty in the self-localization of the Compton camera processed by SfM, and by positional uncertainty in the gamma-ray incidence determined by the sensors of the Compton camera was investigated. The created map depicts the positions of radioactive substances inside radiation work environments, such as decommissioning work sites at nuclear power stations.


Measurement of the differential cross sections of the $$Sigma^- p$$ elastic scattering in momentum range 470 to 850 MeV/$$c$$

A high statistics $$Sigma p$$ scattering experiment is performed at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Momentum-tagged $$Sigma^-$$s running in a liquid hydrogen target are accumulated by detecting the reaction with a high intensity $$pi^-$$ beam of 20 M/spill. The differential cross sections of the $$Sigma^- p$$ elastic scattering were derived with a drastically improved accuracy by identifying approximately 4,500 events from 1.72 $$times$$ 10$$^7$$ $$Sigma^-$$. The derived differential cross section shows a clear forward-peaking angular distribution for a $$Sigma^-$$ momentum range from 470 to 850 MeV/$$c$$. The accurate data will impose a strong constraint on the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.


3D position and radioactivity estimation of radiation source by a simple directional radiation detector combined with structure from motion

It is important to visualize radioactive substances' position and distribution and estimate their radioactivity levels to reduce the exposure dose of workers in radioactive areas (such as decommissioning worksites of nuclear power stations) and improve nuclear security functions. To visualize the radioactive substance's three-dimensional (3D) location, a directional radiation detector with a cylindrical shield on a simple single-pixel gamma-ray detector was applied to the structure from motion (SfM) technology using an ordinary digital camera. Verification was performed by a system that combines SfM with a CdTe sensor probe having narrow directivity. $$^{241}$$Am radiation source's position was visualized by drawing the radiation source's image acquired by the gamma-ray detector on the work area 3D model reconstructed through SfM. Furthermore, as SfM is a simultaneous localization and mapping technology, the system measures the gamma rays while measuring the gamma-ray detector's dynamic position and posture information. The measurements can be acquired while the gamma-ray detector is freely moving in the work area. These methods visualized the radiation source's position and quantitatively estimated the radiation source's radioactivity.


Automatic data acquisition for visualizing radioactive substances by combining a gamma-ray imager and an autonomous mobile robot

To reduce the exposure doses of workers and to establish decontamination plans, it is important to understand and visualize the distribution of radioactive substances at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, where an accident occurred on the 11th of March, 2011. In this decommissioning work environment, radioactive substances adhered to various objects, such as rubble and equipment, and it was necessary to visualize the distribution of these contaminants in all three dimensions. The technology used to automatically and remotely acquire data to visualize the distribution of radioactive substances in three dimensions was useful for reducing the exposure dose of the workers and to shorten the survey time. We constructed an automatic data acquisition system that consisted of a Compton camera and a 3D-light detection and ranging sensor mounted on an autonomously moving robot. We also evaluated the system feasibility using radiation sources and succeeded in automatically acquiring the data required for visualizing the radiation sources. For this data acquisition, the operator did not need to operate the system after the measurements were started. The effects of the imaging parameters of the Compton camera and the accuracy of the self-position estimation of the system on the radiation-imaging accuracy are also discussed.


Study of $$Sigma N$$ interaction from the $$Sigma p$$ scattering experiment at J-PARC

A high statistics $$Sigma p$$ scattering experiment has been performed at the K1.8 beamline in the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Data for momentum-tagged $$Sigma^-$$ beam running in a liquid hydrogen target were accumulated by detecting the $$pi^{-}p to {K}^{+}{Sigma}^{-}$$ reaction with a high intensity $$pi^-$$ beam of 20 M/spill. The number of the $$Sigma^-$$ beam was about $$1.7 times 10^7$$ in total. The $$Sigma^- p$$ elastic scattering and the $$Sigma^- p to Lambda n$$ inelastic scattering events were successfully observed with about 100 times larger statistics than that in past experiments.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS), operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings, Inc., experienced a meltdown as a result of a large tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. At that time, it was necessary to understand the aspects of the decommissioning working environment inside the FDNPS, such as establishing how the radioactive substances were distributed across the site, for work to be done efficiently without exposure to large amounts of radiation. Therefore, virtual reality (VR) emerged as a solution. There have been previous reports done on a technique for visualizing the distribution of radioactive substances in three dimensions utilizing a freely moving gamma-ray imager combined with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology. In this paper, we introduce imaging technologies for the acquisition of image data from radioactive substances and three-dimensional (3D) structural models of the working environment, using a freely moving gamma-ray imager combined with SLAM technology. For this research, we also constructed a VR system and displayed the 3D data in a VR space, which enables users to experience the actual working environment without radiation exposure. In creating the VR system, any user can implement this method by donning an inexpensive head-mounted display apparatus and using a free, or low-cost, application software.
