Achieving carbon neutrality in Japan in 2050, hydrogen is expected to be used as an alternative to fossil fuels in the hard-to-abate sectors. In steelmaking, hydrogen-based reduction process has been developed as a substitute for the conventional blast furnace steelmaking process, which involves the reduction of iron ore by coke. In chemical industry, a novel olefin production process has been developed using hydrogen and CO
, through methanol as an intermediate chemical. A large amount of hydrogen is required for these novel processes. Nuclear energy is well-suited to large-scale low-carbon hydrogen production. High temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) is a type of nuclear reactor featuring extraction of high temperature heat. The heat can be applicable to hydrogen production. This study predicts hydrogen demand in five industrial complexes in Japan in 2050 and estimates the potential for introducing HTGR to meet the demand. The introduction of HTGR could be a promising solution for decarbonizing industrial complexes due to their large-scale hydrogen supply capacity.

To clarify the radiation effects of the accident at the TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi NPP on living organisms, it is important to accurately estimate the dose to each individual. We have developed a multi-component analysis program using random number optimization to extract only the components derived from carbonate radicals from the ESR spectra.

We aim to improve the detection limit of the ESR dosimetry method. In this study, the saturation behavior of each radical was investigated by varying the microwave power during ESR measurement. Based on the difference in spin relaxation time between carbonate radicals and native radicals, it is expected that the signal-to-noise ratio improves and the detection limit can be lowered when the microwave power is increased to 4.0 mW.

However, it is not fully understood what kind of molecular structural changes DNA undergoes upon radiation damage. Since it has been reported that various types of DNA damage are formed when DNA is irradiated, our group has investigated the relationship between DNA damage and various patterns of radiation-induced ionization induced by radiation. Although we have so far analyzed DNA damage in a simple system using a rigid body model of DNA, more detailed calculations are required to analyze the molecular structural changes in DNA, which are considered to be important in considering the effects on the human body. In this study, we attempted to clarify the molecular conformational changes of DNA using OpenMX, a first-principles calculation software that can discuss electronic states based on molecular structures. Specifically, we calculated the most stable structure, band dispersion, and wave function of DNA under the assumption that one and two electrons are ionized by various radiation. In the presentation, we will discuss the relationship between the energy dependence of each incident radiation type and the molecular conformational change of DNA. In addition, the radiation-induced changes in the basic physical properties of DNA (corresponding to the initial stage of DNA damage) will be discussed from the viewpoints of both radiation physics and solid state physics.

In the high radiation dose rate environment at the decommissioning sites, the contamination measurement by the workers is not effective. Thus, we developed a remote automatic contamination measurement system using a new scintillator-based detector. A 50 mm
100-
m-thick YAlO
(Ce)(YAP:Ce) scintillator was coupled with a flat panel-type multianode photomultiplier tube. The detector was installed downwards at the bottom of a robot. It has an energy measurement capability, and the energy measurement could discriminate the alpha particles from the beta and
Rn alpha particles. With the energy information, alpha and beta particles could be identified and mapped simultaneously. In addition, a slow-moving robot could be used to obtain statistically sufficient counts in a single run measurement, allowing the evaluation of surface contamination density using only alpha particles. The remote automatic contamination measurement system will be useful in visualizing the contamination distribution in environments that are inaccessible to workers.

The behavior of positively charged positrons is strongly influenced by electrostatic interactions. In nonpolar macromolecules such as polyethylene, energetic positrons, if not incorporated into Ps, fall into a delocalized state. These positrons are sensitively trapped by polar groups, if any. On the other hand, charge-neutral Ps is localized in a free volume regardless of the macromolecule's chemical structure. In this study, we discuss the behavior and annihilation characteristics of positrons and Ps in various macromolecules, emphasizing their differences.

To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

The first chemical experiment on Fl suggested that Fl is a noble-gas-like element, while the second studies suggested that Fl has a volatile-metal-like character. To obtain more reliable conclusion, we performed further experimental studies on Fl adsorption behavior on Si oxide and gold surfaces. The present results suggest that Fl is highly volatile and less reactive than the volatile metal, Hg, but has higher reactivity than the noble gas, Rn.

-Ps annihilation is determined from the previously reported systematic data of positron annihilation age momentum correlation for various polymers and silica glass. A comparison of the

-Ps trapped in a free volume reveals that
-Ps is not thermalized and possesses excess energy in fluorinated polymers and silica glass, indicating that it is difficult for Ps to lose energy in substances containing heavy elements such as fluorine and silicon.
