At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the seawater was injected into Spent Fuel Pool (SFP) after the accident in March 2013. It is considered that corrosion in SFP will be accelerated by the seawater injection. To prevent the corrosion, Tokyo Electronic Power Company injected hydrazine into SFP. We confirmed the hydrazine injection effect in a short time by irradiation test.

Nihon Genshiryoku Gakkai Wabun Rombunshi, 11(4), p.249 - 254, 2012/12

At the spent nuclear fuel pools in the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant, hydrazine has been added to reduce dissolved oxygen in the pool water containing salts. The reduction behavior of dissolved oxygen in seawater with hydrazine in the presence of radiation is unknown. The effect of $$gamma$$ ray irradiation on deoxygenation by hydrazine in artificial seawater was investigated at room temperature. We placed the artificial seawater with small amount of hydrazine under $$gamma$$ ray irradiation at dose rates of 0.3 $$sim$$ 7.5 kGy/h. The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the solutions was measured before and after the irradiation. The concentration of dissolved oxygen hardly decreased in the absence of $$gamma$$ radiation in a few hours, whereas the concentration of dissolved oxygen markedly decreased in the presence of $$gamma$$ radiation. The concentration of dissolved oxygen decreased with irradiation time. At this moment, hydrazine concentration was decreased more than twice the dissolved oxygen concentration. This shows that a part of $$gamma$$ radiolysis products of hydrazine act as deoxidizers. Dissolved oxygen in artificial seawater could be decreased by small addition of hydrazine in the presence of $$gamma$$ radiation at room temperature.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

CDF caused by ATWS (Anticipated Transient Without Scram) event and PLOHS (Protected Loss of Heat Sink) event are majority of CDF in probabilistic safety study at Joyo. Evaluation of these values by reactor dynamic characteristics analysis and natural convection analysis are conducted with a detailed success standard. It was found from evaluation result that CDF are quite low and a dominant core damage accident is UTOP (Unprotected Transient Over Power) event.

Corrosion phenomena in spent nuclear fuel storage pool containing salinity, 2; Effect of irradiation on deoxidation by hydrazine

Motooka, Takafumi; Sato, Tomonori; Yamamoto, Masahiro

no journal, ,

The effect of $$gamma$$ ray irradiation on deoxidation in aqueous solution by hydrazine was investigated using pure water and artificial sea water at room temperature. We placed the solutions with small amount of hydrazine at $$gamma$$ ray irradiation field. The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the solutions was measured before and after $$gamma$$ ray irradiation. Concentration of dissolved oxygen was not decreased without $$gamma$$ ray irradiation, while concentration of dissolved oxygen was markedly decreased for one hour $$gamma$$ ray irradiation even at low dose rate. It is suggested that the hydrazine addition to spent nuclear fuel pool water is effective as a method for decreasing concentration of dissolved oxygen.

no journal, ,

The evaluation and the suitable countermeasures for the corrosion of the materials in spent nuclear fuel storage pool containing salinity is needed in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. In the fuel storage pool, the water containing sea water is irradiated. In this study, the water radiolysis calculation was performed to determine the corrosive condition in the fuel storage pool. Generation of 2 ppm of hydrogen peroxide magnitude was confirmed in the water with 8ppm of dissolved oxygen. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide decreased with oxygen concentration. This result indicated that the deaeration will be effective to mitigate the corrosive condition.
