Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.02(Instruments & Instrumentation)Measurement of neutrons from spent nuclear fuel is performed in this study using the H method, which detects 2.223 MeV rays from neutron capture reaction of hydrogen using a highly pure germanium (HPGe) detector. The detection of the 2.223 MeV ray is affected by intense ray emission from fission products (FPs) because the emission rate of rays from the FP is seven orders of magnitude higher than the emission rate of neutrons. To shield the intense ray from the FP, the HPGe detector is placed off the axis of a collimator, whereas a polyethylene block is placed on the axis. In this geometry, the detector is shielded from the intense rays from the FP, but the detector can measure 2.223 MeV rays from the H reactions in the polyethylene block. The measured count rate of the 2.223 MeV rays is consistent with the expected rate within the statistical error, which is calculated based on the nuclide composition, which is primary Cm, estimated via depletion and decay calculations. Accordingly, the H method is considered feasible to quantify the number of neutron leakage from spent nuclear fuel assembly, which is applicable to certify burn up of the assembly.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.01(Nuclear Science & Technology)A new non-destructive method for evaluating Cs activity in spent nuclear fuels was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for physical measurements in burnup credit implementation. Cs activities were quantified using gamma ray measurements and numerical detector response simulations without reference fuels, in which Cs activities are well known. Fuel samples were obtained from a lead use assembly (LUA) irradiated in a commercial pressurized water reactor (PWR) up to 53 GWd/t. Gamma rays emitted from the samples were measured using a bismuth germinate (BGO) scintillation detector through a collimator attached to a hot cell. The detection efficiency of gamma rays with the detector was calculated using the PHITS particle transport calculation code considering the measurement geometry. The relative activities of Cs, Cs, and Eu in the sample were measured with a high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector for more accurate simulations of the detector response for the samples. The absolute efficiency of the detector was calibrated by measuring a standard gamma ray source in another geometry. Cs activity in the fuel samples was quantified using the measured count rate and detection efficiency. The quantified Cs activities agreed well with those estimated using the MVP-BURN depletion calculation code.

Prior to the STM measurements, the electronic structure of Li@C in the Li@C[PF] salt was also precisely determined. In the salt, it is shown that Li and PF have nearly single positive and negative charge, respectively, and the C cage is nearly neutral, suggesting that Li@C in the salt retains its original electronic state.

The world's first microbeam focusing technology for heavy ions of hundreds MeV accelerated by a cyclotron has been developed at the TIARA facility in the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The technology enables us to form a microbeam of less than 1 m in diameter and to shoot a specified point on a target by one ion (single-ion hit) with spatial accuracy of microbeam size. In the course of the development, a cyclotron technology to accelerate a small energy-spread beam of hundres MeV, which is necessary for focusing to 1 m, has been developed as well as a beam focusing apparatus, beam size measurement and so forth based on the several-MeV microbeam/single-ion hit system of the TIARA electrostatic accelerators. Applicability of the technologies was examined by actual use in irradiation experiment and the result were fed back to them. This paper reports the process and the results of the development over ten years.

The Japan materials testing reactor (here-in-after "JMTR") was used for irradiation experimental facility such as fuels and materials for commercial reactor. And the JMTR renewal work was started in 2006 and was completed in 2011. In this report, a part of renewal work for (1) freezer and its accompanying pipe and electricity facilities which the purpose of humidification and air-conditioning in the reactor and hot laboratory building, (2) boiler and its accompanying facilities which the purpose of humidification and heating in the reactor, hot laboratory and Alpha Gamma Facility (AGF) is summarized.

To achieve the rapid-evaluation of heavy-ion microbeam profile in the atmosphere, we investigated the improved etching method of CR-39 and semi-automatic image analysis. These processes could be reduced down to only one-twelfth and one-thirtieth of that of the conventional method, respectively. Also, the beam-profile was simulated by the SRIM software. These facts made it sure that this present method was worth enough for the rapid-evaluation.

Synthetic materials, such as ePTFE or Dacron are not suitable for reconstructing the small-diameter arteries. In contrast, tissue engineering (TE) graft has been attracting great attention recently. One of the promising approaches of TE grafts is using acellular tissues. The acellular scaffold may have the same structure and characteristics as the natural tissue and can be replaced with the host tissues. In this study, we prepared the acellular scaffold using irradiation, which is expected to induce the apoptosis of the cells.

It was found for the first time in the LHD-source 2, that both the amount of Cs I (neutral Cs) and Cs II (Cs) in the source plasma light rose sharply when beam acceleration began, and continued rising during a 10 s pulse. We think that this was because the cesium was evaporated/sputtered from the source backplate by the back-streaming positive ions.

Since ionizing radiation is used for sterilizing or lowering the microbial content of foods, the development of versatile detection methods of irradiated foods is necessary for appropriate management. In an effort to distinguish between irradiated and non-irradiated food, a method based on the detection of oxidative DNA base damage using the chemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with anti-8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine antibody was developed. It was shown that this chemiluminescence ELISA method could be applied to chicken, beef and pork that were irradiated with over 3 kGy. Twenty milligrams of a loaf of meat was sufficient to distinguish between irradiated and non-irradiated meat by this method.

In this study, we focussed on the ability of PprA protein to recognize and bind to double-stranded DNA carrying strand breaks, and attempted to visualize radiation-induced DNA strand breaks in mammalian cultured cells by employing PprA protein using an immunofluorescence technique. Increased PprA protein binding to CHO-K1 nuclei immediately following irradiation suggests the protein is binding to DNA strand breaks. By altering the cell permeabilization conditions, PprA protein binding to CHO-K1 mitochondria, which is probably resulted from DNA strand break immediately following irradiation, was also detected. The method developed and detailed in this study will be useful in evaluating DNA damage responses in cultured cells, and could also be applicable to genotoxic tests in the environmental and pharmaceutical fields.

Times Cited Count:19 Percentile:74.68(Nuclear Science & Technology)A flat carbon fiber composite tile mock-up with screw tubes, which have helical fins like a nut, was fabricated aiming at further improvement of the heat removal performance of the cost-effectively manufactured divertor target for JT-60SC (modified JT-60 as a superconducting coil tokamak). The heat removal performance of the mock-up was successfully demonstrated on the JAERI Electron Beam Irradiation Stand. The estimated heat transfer coefficient of the screw tube at the non-boiling region was roughly 3 times higher than that of the smooth tube. This corresponds to 1.5 times that of the swirl tube. A heat cycle test of 10 MW/m2 showed that the mock-up with the screw tubes could withstand for 1400 cycles. These results indicate that the divertor target plate with the flat carbon fiber composite tile and the screw tube can be a promising candidate for the JT-60SC divertor target.
