Times Cited Count:11 Percentile:91.76(Multidisciplinary Sciences)Alive cancer cells after fractionated irradiations with 2 Gy X-rays per day for more than 30 days show clinically relevant radioresistant. Such radioresistance is experimentally interpreted to attributed to the increment of stem-like cell content. However, only an experimental approach cannot clarify the cell responses (DNA damage and cell death induction) of cancer stem cells, so the radioresistant mechanisms remain uncertain. In addition to the conventional cell experiments using radio-resistant cell lines established after fractionated irradiations, in this study we developed a mathematical model (so called integrated microdosimetric-kinetic (IMK) model) explicitly considering cancer stem-like cell content and DNA damage responses and investigated radioresistant mechanisms acquired after fractionated irradiations. The IMK model analysis suggested that the changes of stem-like cell fraction and DNA repair efficiency play important roles of radioresisitance acquired after irradiations. Considering these into the IMK model, we successfully reproduced the experimental survival of various cell lines and various irradiation conditions. This work would contribute to not only the precise understanding of the radioresistant mechanisms induced after irradiation but also predicting curative effects with high precision.

Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0.01(Nuclear Science & Technology)Experiments using a small-scale apparatus with 30 ml actual high-level liquid waste from the Tokai Reprocessing Plant were carried out to show that the hydrogen concentration in the gas phase reaches a steady-state value of much less than 4% (lower explosive limit) in the absence of sweeping-air. The H concentration reached a steady-state value as was expected and it was compared with a value predicted from an equation with parameters which had been obtained using the simulated solution. Satisfactory agreement showed that the Pd-ion catalytic H consumption reaction previously found in the simulated solution proceeded equally well in the actual solution.

The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) plan consists of (1) research on engineering technology deep underground, and (2) research on engineering technology as a basis of geological disposal. The former research is mainly aimed in this study, which is categorized in (a) development of design and construction planning technologies, (b) development of construction technologies, (c) development of countermeasure technologies, and (d) development of technologies for security. In this study, the researches on engineering technology are being conducted in these four categories by using data measured during construction as a part of the second phase of the MIU plan.

Before start of mass-productions, the conductor should be tested to confirm superconducting performance in the SULTAN facility, Switzerland. The original design of cabling twist pitches is 45-85-145-250-450 mm, called normal twist pitch (NTP). The test results of the conductors with NTP was that current shearing temperature (Tcs) is decreasing due to electro-magnetic (EM) load cycles. On the other hand, the results of the conductors with short twist pitches (STP) of 25-45-80-150-450 mm show that the Tcs is stabilized during EM load cyclic tests. Because the conductors with STP have smaller void fraction, higher compaction ratio during cabling is required and possibility of damage on strands increases. The technology for the cables with STP was developed in Japanese cabling suppliers. The several key technologies will be described in this paper.

A 400-m-thick gas electron multiplier (THGEM) was used as the proportional counter for high injection rate capability. We examined the gas gain stability and the influence of ion feedback on particle tracks at high beam injection rates of up to 10 particles per second (pps) using a low-energy C beam. From the result of this examination, we found that the THGEM was found to be applicable for our active target at high injection rates of up to 10 pps.

The beam energies covered the Gamow peaks for 1310 K. Large cross sections were observed at around E = 0.8 MeV, implying a resonance state located at 22.4 MeV in Be. The present astrophysical reaction rate is higher in one order magnitude than the presently adopted rate at around 110 K.

Times Cited Count:13 Percentile:51.61(Instruments & Instrumentation)KEKCB is an 18 GHz Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) ion source and is a charge breeder device for converting mass-separated 1 radioactive ions to multi-ionized ones by utilizing an axial injection technique to the ECR plasma. It is a part of the Tokai Radioactive Ion Accelerator Complex (TRIAC) facility. Based on the developments so far, converting efficiencies for metal elements, such as barium and indium, and for gaseous elements, such as krypton and xenon, are improved to be 7 and 2 , respectively. And it is confirmed that the efficiency is nearly the constant for short-lived (t 1 sec) isotopes. Background ions mixed in the output beams are supressed to be 600 pps from 10 pps by applying all aluminum electrodes and high pressure pure-water cleanings.

We have applied the blanket mockup composed of two enriched LiTiO and three beryllium layers, and measured the detailed spatial distribution of the tritium production rate (TPR) using enriched LiCO pellets. TPRs in the pellets have been measured by a liquid scintillation counter. Experiments have been done under a condition with a neutron reflector surrounding the DT neutron source. Numerical simulations have been performed using the MCNP-4C with the FENDL-2.0 and JENDL-3.3. The ranges of ratios of calculation results to experimental ones (C/Es) are 0.97-1.17 concerning with local TPR, and 1.04-1.09 for the integrated tritium production. It is found that the total integrated tritium production, which corresponds to tritium breeding ratio, can be predicted within uncertainty of 10% using the Monte Carlo calculation code and latest nuclear data libraries.

Times Cited Count:7 Percentile:40.66(Engineering, Electrical & Electronic)AC losses in the CIC conductor consist of both regular loss that are proportional to cable twisting pitch squared and irregular loss that could not be estimated from short conductor sample results. It was explained from our previous works that irregular loops produce the losses with long time constants up to several hundred seconds. The observed long time constant indicates that contact conditions between the two strands forming the loop should be line contact. We traced the sample conductor with 1 m in length. The measured results show that large displacements of strands from their original positions due to compressing the conductor provide many line contacts. It is found that the averaged line contact length reaches about 10 mm that is three orders of magnitude larger than the 0.01 mm of point contact length.
