The deuterium (D) permeation behaviors for ion damaged tungsten (W) by 3 keV D$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ and 10 keV C$$^{+}$$ were studied. The D permeability was obtained for un-damaged W at various temperatures. For both D$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ and C$$^{+}$$ implanted W, the permeability was clearly reduced. But, for the D$$_{2}$$$$^{+}$$ implanted W, the permeability was recovered by heating at 1173 K and it was almost consistent with that for un-damaged W. In the case of C$$^{+}$$ implanted W, the permeability was not recovered even if the sample was heated at 1173 K, indicating that the existence of carbon would prevent the recovery of permeation path in W. In addition, TEM observation showed the voids were grown by heating at 1173 K and not removed, showing the existence of damages would not largely influence on the hydrogen permeation behavior in W in the present study.

A heavy-ion microbeam with energy of hundreds of MeV is utilized for research in biotechnology and materials science at the JAEA AVF cyclotron facility. Beam users need microbeams providing a wide range of linear energy transfer (LET). In order to vary LET widely, we have to change the ion species and/or energy. A cocktail beam acceleration technique is frequently used to change the ion species quickly. Ion species and energy can be changed by slightly shifting the acceleration frequency. The cocktail acceleration technique has been applied to microbeam production for quick change of ion species of a microbeam. As a result, we have succeeded to reduce considerably microbeam changing time to within 30 minutes between a 260 MeV Ne and a 520 MeV Ar. No deterioration of a microbeam spot size has been confirmed using a secondary electron microscope image of a copper mesh.

A commissioning of the J-PARC linac DTL1 is now under way at KEK. A 30mA H$$^{-}$$ beam was accelerated to 19.7-MeV, and 100% transmission was obtained with a 20-msec-pulse-width and 12.5-Hz-repetition beam. In this paper, present status of the DTL1 commissioning and preliminary results of the commissioning, such as emittance measurements, are presented.

Comparative ab initio calculation studies of hydration structures on Cs and other alkaline metals

We report the results of ab initio molecular dynamics simulation on the hydration structure of monovalent Cs cation, which is one of the most fundamental issues in terms of chemical forms of Cs. The ion hydration of heavy alkali species, Rb and Cs, have been not studied thoroughly as Na and K. Using the VASP code, ab initio molecular dynamics are performed to examine and compare the hydrated structures of monovalent Li, Na, K, Rb, and Cs ions. It is found that hydrated Rb and Cs ions constitute very flexible solvation shells. Moreover, we also investigate the dynamical properties, such as the residence time of water molecules in the first shell. Consequently, we find that the exchange rate of water molecules of the first shell in Cs is significantly fast compared to other ion cases.
