We have developed a kinetic MHD model that extends the kinetic effects of thermal ions in an magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model using a particle-in-cell method. Global calculations of ion temperature gradient (ITG) instabilities were performed using this model, and the linear growth rate and frequency of the ITG instability were compared with a gyrokinetic model using the adiabatic electron response approximation. Calculations of zonal flow damping were also performed and compared to zonal flow damping theory. The validity of the developed kinetic MHD model was demonstrated from these benchmark calculations.
