This study proposes a newly developed phoswich alpha/beta detector that can discriminate alpha and beta particles emitted from the alpha and beta contaminations in the FDNPS site. The phoswich alpha/beta detector is made up of two layers of scintillators that detect alpha and beta particles. The pulse shape discrimination (PSD) method was used to detect alpha particles in high beta particle and high gamma-ray (comparable to gamma-ray dose rate near the FDNPS reactor building) environments. Due to a 23.3% full width at half maximum (FWHM) energy resolution for alpha particles, the detector can be used to distinguish between nuclear fuel materials such as plutonium and its radon progeny (Po-214). Moreover, the detector could distinguish alpha particles from $$^{137}$$Cs gamma rays with a dose rate background up to 9.0 mSv/h. It is the first to demonstrate that the developed phoswich detector can be used to discriminate and measure alpha and beta particles of the actual contaminated FDNPS samples.

In order to evaluate long-term coolablity of the debris-bed with decay heat, a three-dimensional calculation method coupled with the debris bed module was developed in this study. The coupled code calculation results show that natural circulation of the coolant between the hot pool and the cold pool is established through the four intermediate heat exchangers after the activation of the dipped direct heat exchangers. The cold pool with the debris-bed is continually cooled not only by the natural circulation flow, but also by heat transfer to the hot pool through the plenum separation plate between the hot pool and the cold pool. The effect of the three-dimensional flow field around the core catcher on the temperature in the debris-bed is about 20K under the current calculation condition.

Coolability evaluation of the debris bed on core catcher in a sodium-cooled fast reactor with a whole vessel model

This paper describes coolability evaluations of a debris bed with a variety of decay heat removal system (DHRS) operating conditions with a whole vessel model assuming fuel accumulation on the core catcher in a short term. The evaluation tool is a one-dimensional plant dynamics code, Super-COPD, with a debris bed module. The coolability evaluations have indicated that the current core catcher design secures sufficient natural circulation flows around the core catcher to ensure the debris bed cooling when at least one circuit of DHRS was activated. Sensitivity analyses under a pessimistic condition have shown that the debris bed is coolable with at least one circuit of improved DHRS even if most of fuel accumulates on the core catcher in a short term.

In this paper, the approach to event tree development and the scope of the event tree analysis were described with key points on core catcher loading. For the analytical conditions, two core catcher loading conditions were given as bounding and conservative cases. For important heading of the event tree, key important phenomena were included: strong back design, fuel-coolant interaction and quench in the sodium plenum design, jet attack, criticality and coolability on the core catcher. In this paper, preliminary trial quantification was attempted using a probability ranking table which is based on engineering judgement. This event tree analysis has identified the dominant sequence, and clarified the effect of the core catcher loading and effectiveness of design measures. This study suggests that the criticality measure is very important for the core catcher study.

The research and development (R&D) on the production of $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc by neutron activation method ((n, $$gamma$$) method) using JMTR has been carried out in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center. The specific radioactivity of $$^{99}$$Mo by (n, $$gamma$$) method is extremely low compared with that by fission method ((n,f) method), and as a result, the radioactive concentration of the obtained $$^{99m}$$Tc solution is also lowered. To solve the problem, we propose the solvent extraction with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) for recovery of $$^{99m}$$Tc from $$^{99}$$Mo produced by (n, $$gamma$$) method. We have developed the $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc separation/extraction/concentration devices and have carried out the performance tests for recovery of $$^{99m}$$Tc from $$^{99}$$Mo produced by (n, $$gamma$$) method. In this paper, in order to establish an experimental system for $$^{99}$$Mo/$$^{99m}$$Tc production, the R&D results of the system are summarized on the improvement of the devices for high-recovery rate of $$^{99m}$$Tc, on the dissolution of the pellets, which is the high-density molybdenum trioxide (MoO$$_{3}$$) pellets irradiated in Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR), on the production of $$^{99m}$$Tc, and on the inspection of the recovered $$^{99m}$$Tc solutions.

Uplift and denudation history of the Yoro-Suzuka-Nunobiki mountains based on apatite fission-track thermochronology

We are attempting to reveal uplift/denudation history of the Yoro-Suzuka-Nunobiki mountains, southwest Japan, by using apatite fission-track (AFT) thermochronology. We obtained AFT ages of 47-30 Ma. The ages are younger in the central and southern part of the Suzuka Range and get older to the north and south. Inverse thermal modeling based on the AFT ages and lengths indicates the difference among the ages reflect amount of denudation accommodate with the mountains uplifting in the past few million years. These results imply the process of the mountain uplifting of this area is more complicated than the developments of the basins propagating from south to north.

The concept of geological disposal of HLW in Japan is based on a multi-barrier system which combines a stable geological environment with a robust barrier system. Potential geological host formations and their surroundings are chosen, in particular, for their long-term stability, taking into account the fact that Japan is located in a tectonically active zone. This report is a plan of research and development (R&D) on geosphere stability for long-term isolation of HLW in JAEA, in fiscal year 2014. The objectives and contents in fiscal year 2014 are described in detail based on the outline of 5 years plan (fiscal years 2010-2014). In addition, the planned framework is structured into the following categories: (1) Development and systematization of investigation techniques, (2) Development of models for long-term estimation and effective assessment, (3) Development of dating techniques.

In research reactors, CCD cameras are used to observe reactor core for reactor operation management, e.g. to prevent debris from falling. In order to measure the reactor power and fuel burnup exactly by means of observation of Cherenkov light, the development of the on-line measurement device started in 2009. In this study, the wavelength and the absolute irradiance of the Cherenkov light were measured by a spectrometer, and the Cherenkov light was observed by the CCD camera. As a result, the measurement value is good agreement with the nominal value. On the other hand, the value by the visible imaging system was obtained the same tendency of nominal transmittance value of ND-filters.

There are many livestock farmers in Gunma Prefecture. Many of the farms are located under Mt. Akagi and Haruna, which attract tourists. Furthermore, rivers around the mountains are source of water supply to metropolitan area. Therefore, the waste treatments are very important. Regulations of smell and COD (chemical oxygen demand) are severe in Gunma Prefecture. Although there is no regulation for color of drain water, color in secondary treated water from livestock urine waste has been one of the major concerns for livestock farmers. The color is a metabolite of microorganisms and not easy to be removed. People have tried to remove the color by ozone treatment, absorption using activated carbon or soils. An absorbent was prepared by radiation grafting; fibers were irradiated with $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-rays and some kinds of monomers were grafted onto the fibers. The absorbent thus prepared were used to decolorize the secondary treated water. The color and COD were removed by the absorbent, however, COD removal was more difficult than decolorization. Degree of grafting (weight increase expressed in % by grafting reaction to initial weight of the fiber), treated water/absorbent ratio, flow rate of treated water, and direction of flow affected color and COD removal. The used absorbent could be used repeatedly after washing.

The intensities of the prompt $$gamma$$ rays from the $$^{14}$$N(n,$$gamma$$)$$^{15}$$N reaction have been precisely measured. As the samples, a liquid nitrogen target and a deuterated melamine (C$$_{3}$$D$$_{6}$$N$$_{6}$$) were used. The previous values widely used as intensity standards agreed with those obtained in this study within 4-5% in the 2-11 MeV region, however, showed a monotonous decrease with the increase of $$gamma$$-ray energy.
