Kondo, Yasuhiro; Chimura, Motoki; Cicek, E.*; Fukui, Yuji*; Futatsukawa, Kenta*; Fuwa, Yasuhiro; Goto, Rikuto*; Hirano, Koichiro; Ishikawa, Masaki*; Ito, Takashi; et al.

Proceedings of 22nd Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.124 - 129, 2026/03

Various upgrade plans of the J-PARC linac are underway, and repetition-rate doubling project is one of the most important part. Currently, the linac supplies a 400~MeV H$$^-$$ ion beam to the 3~GeV synchrotron (RCS) at a repetition rate of 25~Hz. However, to deliver the beam to both RCS and proton-beam irradiation facility under planning, it is necessary to raise the repetition rate from 25~Hz to 50~Hz. Prior to construction of the beamline to the irradiation facility, we conducted a verification of the 50~Hz operation of all the linac apparatus simultaneously within the current operational limits in May 2025. And also, the verification of the 50~Hz operation of the particle counter system, which is one of the most important safety device of the J-PARC accelerator, was conducted. As a result, any significant problems were not found out, and it is now ready for the upcoming 50~Hz-beam acceleration demonstration. This paper describes this details of the demonstration of the 50~Hz operation, without beam acceleration, of the J-PARC linac.

It has become possible to synthesize high-quality composite nanoparticles in which a different material is grown on the surface of nanoparticle crystals. To evaluate such nanostructures, it is effective to combine different evaluation methods at various scales. We performed various structural and electronic state evaluations of BaTiO$$_3$$/KNbO$$_3$$ nanocomposite particles using synchrotron radiation. From the structural evaluation, it was confirmed that the nanocomposite particles have a core of 100 nm of BaTiO$$_3$$ covered with 20 nm of KNbO$$_3$$. The O-K absorption edge spectrum of the outermost surface KNbO$$_3$$ was different from that of the bulk and nanoparticles, and it was found that the chemical bonding state changes when KNbO$$_{3}$$ is made into composite particles.

Together with the intensity upgrade in J-PARC Linac Front-End, improvement of RFQ transmission ratio is an important task. This RFQ transmission ratio depends strongly upon the solenoid current settings in the low energy beam transport line (LEBT). In the present study, high beam current cases (72 mA and 88 mA H$$^-$$ beam current in LEBT) are investigated at a test-stand. Phase space distributions of the H$$^-$$ beam particles at the RFQ entrance are measured and compared with numerical results by Particle-In-Cell simulation. As a result, it has been clarified that a 15 mm $$phi$$ orifice for differential pumping of H$$_2$$ gas coming from the ion source plays a role as a collimator in these beam conditions. This leads to change the beam emittance and Twiss parameters at the RFQ entrance. Especially in the condition with the beam current up to 88 mA in LEBT, the beam collimation contributes to optimize the phase space distribution to the RFQ acceptance with relatively low solenoid current settings. As a higher solenoid current setting would be necessary to suppress the beam expansion due to high space charge effect, these results suggest that current-saving of the solenoids can be possible even in the higher beam intensity operations.

We have upgraded a 3-MeV linac at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

Nuclear and magnetic structure and full magnon dispersions of yttrium iron garnet Y$$_3$$Fe$$_5$$O$$_{12}$$ have been studied by neutron scattering. The lowest-energy dispersion below 14 meV exhibits a quadratic dispersion as expected from ferromagnetic magnons. The imaginary part of $$q$$-integrated dynamical spin susceptibility $$chi$$"($$E$$) exhibits a square-root energy-dependence in the low energies. The magnon density of state is estimated from the $$chi$$"($$E$$) obtained on an absolute scale. The value is consistent with a single chirality mode for the magnon branch expected theoretically.

NEA/NSC/R(2017)3, p.427 - 432, 2017/11

Transmutation of long-lived radioactive nuclides including minor actinides (MA: Np, Am, Cm) has been studied in Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Pb-Bi cooled sub-critical accelerator-driven system (ADS) is regarded as one of the powerful tools for transmutation of MA under the double strata fuel cycle concept. Uranium-free MA-Pu nitride fuel was chosen as the first candidate for MA transmutation. Reprocessing of spent ADS fuel and reusing MA recovered from the spent ADS fuels is necessary to improve the transmutation ratio. A pyrochemical process has been proposed as the first candidate for reprocessing of the spent nitride fuel for MA transmutation, because this technique has some advantages over aqueous process, such as the resistance to radiation damage, which is an important issue for the fuels containing large amounts of highly radioactive MA, and feasibility for recovering expensive N-15 in the spent fuels to be reused. This paper overviews the current status of the technology development, including our recent study. Development of the anode suitable for electro-refining of nitride fuels and that of the apparatus for renitridation of the metals recovered in Cd cathode for 100g-Cd scale cold tests are main topics. Evaluation of the batch sizes of each process, which is necessary for estimating the scale of the engineering-apparatus, with considering the decay heat of MA and FP, will also be introduced.

Proceedings of 28th International Linear Accelerator Conference (LINAC 2016) (Internet), p.251 - 253, 2017/05

After upgrade of J-PARC Linac in 2014, Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) beam commissioning of the J-PARC LINAC has been made for improving H$$^{-}$$ beam intensity extracted from Linac. Currents of two solenoid coils and steering magnets in LEBT are optimized with extraction and acceleration voltages for static acceleration in ion source (IS) which decides on an initial emittance diagram of H$$^{-}$$ beam. As a result of LEBT and IS parameter optimization, beam transmission rate of RFQ has been reached up to 96% in 50 mA H$$^{-}$$ current operation. Moreover, PIC-MC (Particle-In-Cell Monte-Carlo) simulation models developed for H$$^{-}$$ transport in LEBT. Comparison between experimental and numerical results are presented to clarify beam physics from IS exit to RFQ entrance.

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65$$^{circ}$$ scraper was irradiated by the H$$^{-}$$ beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

An impeccable, high-performance new reagent called alkyl diamide amine (ADAAM) was examined from the viewpoint of mutual separation of Am(III) and Eu(III). ADAAM has three donor atoms, one soft N-donor atom and two hard O-donor atoms, in the central frame. The combination of soft and hard atoms affords a tridentate donor set of atoms that ensures remarkable extractability and selectivity of Am(III) and Eu(III) in highly acidic media.

The paper describes developments of neutron scattering instruments in J-PARC neutron facility, which is a short pulse spallation source operated at a repetition rate 25 Hz and has a proton power 1 MW. New concept has been adopted to utilize high intensity coupled moderator even for a high resolution inelastic scattering instruments by taking a pulse shaping chopper system. Advanced technique has been also realized by taking an ability of event-recording system altogether with an improvement of a chopper system, realizing multi-Ei method. The paper also touches upon a general design concept for diffractometers in accordance with the source characteristics.

At the Fukui Prefectural Hospital Proton Therapy Center, neutron doses behind concrete shields and at maze have been measured by using radiation monitors, DARWIN, Wendi-2, a rem meter, and solid state nuclear track detectors. The measured data were compared with the estimations by analytical models and Monte Carlo code PHITS. The analytical model with the parameters employed in shielding design of the facility gave considerably larger estimates than the measured data. This means that the facility was designed with an enough safety margin. The calculation results of PHITS were less than those of the analytical model, and were about 3 times larger than the measured data. From the view point of a safety policy with conservative estimation for shielding design, Monte Carlo simulation is a better tool for estimating radiation safety at accelerator-based proton treatment facilities.

Liquid selenium bromide consists of Br-Se-Se-Br molecules, where a strong inter-molecular correlation exists so that Se-Se bond is parallel to that in neighboring molecules. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) of Se$$_{2}$$Br$$_{2}$$ was performed by cold-neutron disk-chopper spectrometer in J-PARC. Multi Ei measurement with incident energies of 3.13, 7.72 and 41.83 meV was applied. It is found that QENS can be well fitted by two Lorentzian components corresponding slow and fast relaxation modes. Integral intensity of slow component shows a maximum value at around 1.6 $${AA}^{-1}$$ at room temperature and shifts to lower Q direction with increasing temperature. This shift relates to density decrease. In opposite, the HWHM of the latter has so-called de Gennes narrowing and this Q position shifts to lower Q direction with increasing temperature. This mode relates to neighboring-molecular correlation because narrowing generally occurs at Q position which exhibits strong correlation.

Technical development for in-pile IASCC growth tests by using a 0.5T-CT specimen in JMTR

Chimi, Yasuhiro; Shibata, Akira; Ise, Hideo; Kasahara, Shigeki; Kawaguchi, Yoshihiko*; Nakano, Junichi; Omi, Masao; Nishiyama, Yutaka

Proceedings of Enlarged Halden Programme Group Meeting 2011 (CD-ROM), 10 Pages, 2011/10

In order to load a large specimen of 0.5T-CT up to a high stress intensity factor of $$sim$$30 MPa$$sqrt{m}$$, we have adopted a lever type loading unit for in-pile irradiation-assisted stress corrosion crack (IASCC) growth tests in the Japan Materials Testing Reactor (JMTR). In this unit, the applied load is generated by shrinking a bellows with lower inner gas pressure than surrounding water pressure and enlarged by leverage. The crack length of the specimen is monitored by potential drop method (PDM) using mineral insulator (MI) cables. In this paper, technical concerns of the in-pile crack growth test unit, especially the estimation procedure of applied load to the specimen inside the irradiation capsule and the evaluation of precision of the PDM signals are presented.
