The impact of Stellar flares on extrasolar planetary systems has been discussed and argued, especially whether there is a potential impact on their life systems. Here, we propose a comprehensive evaluation system for stellar flares, focusing on Stellar Proton Events (SPE) on selected extrasolar planets with hypothetical atmospheres and oceans. This is done by cross-linking KIC flare-observed and flare-estimated stars by their start pots that are directly linked with the Monte Carlo simulation system PHITS through the exoplanetary database system ExoKyoto. The estimated dose at ground level for each planetary surface did not exceed the critical dose for complex animals.

Applicability study of nuclear graphite material IG-430 to VHTR

Osaki, Hirotaka; Shimazaki, Yosuke; Sumita, Junya; Shibata, Taiju; Konishi, Takashi; Ishihara, Masahiro

Proceedings of 23rd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-23) (DVD-ROM), 8 Pages, 2015/05

For the design on the VHTR graphite components, it is desirable to employ graphite material with higher strength. IG-430 graphite has been developed as an advanced candidate for VHTR. However, the new developed IG-430 does not have enough databases for the design of HTGR. In this paper, the compressive strength (Cs) of IG-430, one of important strengths for design data, is statistically evaluated. The component reliability is evaluated based on the safety factors defined by the graphite design code, and the applicability as the VHTR graphite material is discussed. It was found that IG-430 has higher strength (about 11%) and lower standard deviation (about 27%) than IG-110 which is one of traditional graphites used for HTGR, because the crack in IG-430 would not easy to propagate rather than IG-110. Since fracture probability for IG-430 is low, the higher reliability of core-component will be achieved using IG-430. It is expected that IG-430 is applicable for VHTR graphite material.

Graphite material is used for internal structures in High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR). The core components and graphite core support structures are so designed as to maintain the structural integrity to keep core cooling capability. In order to confirm that the core components and graphite core support structures satisfy the design requirement, the temperatures of the reactor internals are measured during the reactor operation. Surveillance test of graphite specimens and in-service inspection (ISI) using TV camera are planned in conjunction with the refueling. This paper describes the evaluation results of the integrity of the core components and graphite core support structures during the high temperature 950$$^{circ}$$C continuous operation, reactor outlet temperature of 950$$^{circ}$$C for 50 days, in HTTR (High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor). The design requirements of the core components and graphite core support structure were satisfied during the high temperature 950$$^{circ}$$C continuous operation. The dimensional change of graphite which directly influences the temperature of coolant was evaluated with considering the temperature profiles of fuel block. The magnitude of irradiation-induced dimensional change was about 1.2 times larger than that of isotherm for 1000$$^{circ}$$C. In addition, the programs of surveillance test and ISI using TV camera were introduced.

The neutron activation cross sections up to GeV are important for the neutron dosimetry of the radiation field in high-energy and high-intensity accelerator facilities for a project of intense spallation neutron source. But the evaluation of neutron activation cross section data is not enough above 20 MeV because experimental data are still scarce. This study aimed to measure the neutron activation cross sections of Bi and Co by using a quasi-monoenergetic neutron field. In this symposium, we will present obtained experimental cross section data with the other experimental data (neutron-induced and proton-induced), the calculated data by PHITS code and the evaluated nuclear data.

The project of the comprehensive nuclear data research for the development of the advanced reactor systems had been executed successfully by eight organizations from 2005 to 2009. In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

In this work, we tried to determine reaction cross sections for Y and Tb induced by neutrons at 300 MeV, which have never been reported. The irradiations were carried out using neutrons produced through $$^{7}$$Li(p, n) reaction at N0 beam line in the Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. To estimate quasi-monoenergetic neutron induced cross sections, the target stacks of Y and Tb were irradiated on the two angles of 0 degree and 30 degree for the axis of the primary proton beam. Neutron cross sections were estimated by subtracting the activities produced in the samples placed on 30 degree from those of 0 degree to correct the contribution of the low energy tail in the neutron spectrum.

Maintenance management of emergency power supply equipment (uninterruptible power supply) in Tokai reprocessing plant

Nishida, Kyosuke; Hiyama, Hisao; Shibata, Satomi; Iwasaki, Shogo; Inami, Shinichi

Nihon Hozen Gakkai Dai-6-Kai Gakujutsu Koenkai Yoshishu, p.294 - 297, 2009/08

Uninterruptible power supply systems are installed in the Tokai reprocessing plant in preparation for the emergency case that the commercial power supply is stopped by an accidental or intentional interruption in the supply of electricity. The uninterruptible power supply system particularly provides a temporary power source to the important devices for the radiation control of nuclear critical monitoring in the plant. Thus, the system is potentially important and essential for nuclear plants. The paper repots the current activities such as regular inspections, replacement of parts and system update, to maintain the function of uninterruptible power supply systems.

The VHTR is being focused and developed internationally. In Japan, the HTTR of the JAEA is in operation, and research and development for the development of commercial HTGRs are carried out. Nuclear graphites are used for core components of the HTGRs and expansion of irradiation data is necessary when enough irradiation data are not established, because the graphite components in the HTGRs are used at severer condition than that in the HTTR. The necessary database can be established by expansion of existing irradiation data with appropriate interpolation and extrapolation methods. This paper shows the reasonable interpolation and extrapolation method for IG-110 graphite which is used for the HTTR and a major candidate for the VHTR. The interpolation and extrapolation method was developed so as to be general by using the irradiation data of the other graphites. As a result, irradiation properties of the IG-110 graphite were successfully expanded to the VHTR condition for the first time and the irradiation properties being necessary for the design could be developed.
