Proceedings of 2017 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2017) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2017/04

JAEA, in conjunction with Tokyo City University, The University of Tokyo and JGC Corporation, have started development of a PRA method considering the safety and design features of HTGR. The primary objective of the project is to develop a seismic PRA method which enables to provide a reasonably complete identification of accident scenario including a loss of safety function in passive system, structure and components. In addition, we aim to develop a basis for guidance to implement the PRA. This paper provides the overview of the activities including development of a system analysis method for multiple failures, a component failure data using the operation and maintenance experience in the HTTR, seismic fragility evaluation method, and mechanistic source term evaluation method considering failures in core graphite components and reactor building.

Proceedings of 2017 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2017) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2017/04

This paper proposes a set of procedures for accident sequence analysis in seismic PRAs of HTGRs that can consider the unique accident progression characteristics of HTGRs. Main features of our proposed procedure are as follows: (1) Systematic analysis techniques including Master Logic Diagrams are used to ensure reasonable completeness in identification of initiating events and classification of accident sequences, (2) Information on factors that govern the accident progression and source terms are effectively reflected to the construction of event trees for delineation of accident sequences, and (3) Frequency quantification of seismically-initiated accident sequence frequencies that involve multiplepipe ruptures are made with the use of the Direct Quantification of Fault Trees by Monte Carlo (DQFM) method by a computer code SECOM-DQFM.

We have studied conduction-band (CB) electronic states of a typical valence-transition compound YbInCu$$_4$$ by means of temperature-dependent hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HX-PES), soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (SX-PES) of the valence band. We have described the valence transition in YbInCu$$_4$$ in terms of the charge transfer from the CB to Yb 4$$f$$ states.

We are constructing a three-dimensional imaging system for medical and biological applications. The system will allow simultaneous imaging at high spatial and energy resolutions across a wide energy range, from several tens of keV to a few MeV. In this work, one prototype head module have been developed for a multi-head Si/CdTe Compton camera system. The performance of the prototype was evaluated with a sealed Ba-133 radiation source. The experiments confirmed that the imaging results were consistent with actual source position. In addition to the resolution for the parallel directions to the detector surface, the position resolution was evaluated for the depth direction at a point in near region of the head-module. These position resolutions were well reproduced by Monte Carlo simulation results.

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

An orange pigmented, non-motile, coccoid bacterial strain, TR0125, was isolated from dust samples collected in the high atmosphere above Japan. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that it was within the radiation of ${it Deinococcus}$ species. Major peptidoglycan amino acids were D-glutamic acid, glycine, D-alanine, L-alanine and ornithine. Predominant fatty acids were 17:0 iso, iso 17:1 $$omega$$ 9c and 15:0 iso. Strong resistance to desiccation, UV-C and $$gamma$$-radiation, high DNA G+C content also supported the affiliation of strain TR0125$$^{T}$$ to the genus ${it Deinococcus}$. TR0125$$^{T}$$ had a highest similarity value (95.7 %) of the 16S rRNA gene sequence to the type strain of the species ${it D. apachensis}$, and phylogenetic analysis shows that it was further separated from ${it D. apachensis}$ than from ${it D. geothermalis}$, indicating that strain TR0125$$^{T}$$ was not a member of these two ${it Deinococcus}$ species. Besides, there were phenotypic differences between strain TR0125$$^{T}$$ and type strains of the two species. Therefore, we propose a new species of the genus ${it Deinococcus}$, ${it Deinococcus aerius}$ sp. nov. (type strain, TR0125$$^{T}$$ = JCM 11750$$^{T}$$ = DSM 21212$$^{T}$$), to accommodate this isolate.

Future synchrotron light sources based on the energy-recovery linacs (ERLs) are expected to be capable of producing super-brilliant and/or ultra-short pulses of synchrotron radiation. Our Japanese collaboration team is making efforts for realizing an ERL-based hard X-ray source. We report recent progress in our R&D efforts.

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 310(2, Part2), p.1070 - 1072, 2007/03

We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of epitaxially grown CaMn$$_{1-x}$$Ru$$_{x}$$O$$_{3}$$ (x = 1.0, 0.5) thin films by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and hard X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HXPES). The XMCD studies indicated that the spin moments of Mn and Ru are aligned in the opposite directions. The HXPES spectra indicated the Ru 4d states at around the Fermi edge (E$$_{F}$$) and the Mn 3d states below E$$_{F}$$. From these results, we propose that the localized Mn 3d t$$_{2g}$$ states and the itinerant Ru 4d t$$_{2g}$$ band are antiferromagnetically coupled and give rise to ferromagnetism, in analogy with the mechanism proposed for the double perovskite oxides such as Sr$$_{2}$$FeMoO$$_{6}$$.
